CUPCAKE CONES! These things are delicious and super simple to make! 

All you need:

  • Sugar cones (any brand will work, but you need at least 12)
  • Cupcake mix
  • Icing
  • Sanding sugar or sprinkles of any kind

Of course, I used a recipe to make both the mix and the icing, but any mix or icing will work for this! It just depends on how easy or how genuine you want them to be. 


Step 1: First, I would cut holes in one of those throw away pans. That way, when you bake the cones, they won’t fall over. I also cut holes in a shoe box lid to have better support after baking, but you can’t bake a shoe box lid. 

Step 2: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare the mix and spoon it into the cones, filling them a little over 2/3. Bake them for 30 minutes.

  • If you want something from scratch, I used a vanilla recipe that turned out great:
  • You will need:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup granulated white sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup milk
  1. In the bowl of your electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and milk, in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Step 3: Allow the cupcakes to cool completely. If you have leftover mix, like I did, you can make just regular cupcakes for those who don’t like the sugar cones. Remember to check the doneness of the cupcakes by inserting a wooden toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, they are done.
Step 4: Spoon your icing into a ziplock bag and cut a small hole into one of the bottom corners. Use this and squeeze the icing onto the top, giving it a little swirl to make it look like ice cream. Apply sprinkles of your desire. 
  • If you want homemade icing, here is your recipe:
  • You will need: 
  • 2 cups confectioners sugar, sifted
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  1. In an electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, cream the butter until smooth and well blended. Add the vanilla extract. 
  2. With the mixer on low speed, gradually beat in the sugar. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. Add the milk and beat on high speed until frosting is light and fluffy (about 3 to 4 minutes). Add a little more milk or sugar, if needed.
