ANIMAL SYMBOLISM. the lion vs the wolves.
DO NOT REBLOG.
its no surprise that lestat finds himself tied heavily to both lions and wolves, two extremely dangerous fanged predators that live in the wild. but the reasons he is linked to them are astoundingly different, yet coincide perfectly to create his flamboyant character.
LIONS. his last name is, of course, lioncourt. but what does this mean? there is in fact a lioncourt coat of arms dating back to the 1600s in southern france, matching up with rice’s description of lestat’s family past ( though his own family history dates back to fighting in the cruscades, where his family was first introduced to dukedom. ) he is lestat of the lion’s court. the lion of course representing the bloodline of King Louis. His family is at the unknown end of the royal bloodline JUST before Louis and Marie Antoinette are overthrown and murdered in the French Revolution.
lions represent bravery, a trait that is famous in his autobiography for the phrase BRAVE. NOT STUBBORN. he bravely goes up the mountain to protect his villagers from the threat of starving wolves ALONE, carrying only a flintlock rifle, an old saber and a mace. but the people of auvergne appreciate him for it. they fear him yes, but they also revere him. they make for him warm, new clothes out of the fur he brings back for them. his family, however, is unhappy that he is alive.
lions are often regarded as the ‘kings’ of the animal kingdom. often lestat’s hair is referred to as a golden mane, often he is depicted driving out other vampires from his territory ( and his coven’s territory ) from new orleans. but in later books he actually gets a CROWN, becoming the leader of vampire kind. in terms of being a spirit animal, the lion represents the sun and the colour gold, as well as leadership, bravery, wealth and strength.
WOLVES. lestat’s nemesis in the first half of the book. those who killed his beloved mastiffs, his best friends in the world, and his young mare that he had broken himself. almost taking his life, lestat was forced to act with wit and courage to get out alive, only to find that the wolves on that mountain weren’t starving at all. after leaving home, lestat encounters many extreme hardships and faces both emotional, physical and sexual traumas– and at the end of his story, he overcomes all odds and becomes the leader of vampire kind. this is an excellent look at the trope “ you threw me to the wolves, but i returned leading the pack. “
the wolf is one of the most FEARED animals in the animal kingdom, and it often times is due to poor education on the actual behavioral traits surrounding wolves. while they represent loyalty and intelligence and strong instincts, it also represents a lust for freedom. however, it can also represent a PREDATORY nature, as well as being mistrustful.
lestat is the perfect wolf in sheep’s clothing, the wolf who finally shows up to kill the boy who kept making villagers rush to his aid each time he lied for fun and games. he is the alpha, protecting his pack with ferocity and loyalty while also inciting fear within them.
