Co. Cheese Melt Bar, Shanghai

It feels strange even typing this, but one of the best meals I had in Shanghai this past trip was… grilled cheese?!

Yup, it’s true. But this is not your everyday grilled cheese. At Co. Cheese they are also melting Chinese cuisine between the bread!

Just down the block from the Jing'an Temple, off of Changde Road, you’ll find quiet, tree-lined Yuyuan Road, which doesn’t feel much like China at all…

Co. Cheese is about halfway down the block…

That’s where Greg, the Canadian owner who now calls Shanghai home, has set up shop, churning out unique sandwiches, classic cocktails and boozy breakfast cereal bowls. More on those later…

We started out our Sunday afternoon with one of Greg’s famous Bloody Ceasars…

Made entirely from scratch using imported Clamato as the base…

It was fabulous! Greg makes all his own pickled vegetables in house as well.

Our first sandwich was the new Shanghai classic, “Number 7”…

Hunanese pork and hot peppers with mozzarella…

Perfect grilled. Perfectly melted. Perfect flavor combination. Easily one of the best things I have tasted all year!

Then there was his second sandwich riff on a Chinese dish, the “Number 8”…

Hong Shoao Rou and Gouda…

Hong Shao Rou is pork belly cooked with ginger, garlic and spices…

Another winner!

Then, just for fun, Greg brought us out a grilled Kraft Mac & Cheese sandwich, with cheddar and Gouda…

Now, about those boozy breakfast cereal bowls…

It turns out Greg used to offer breakfast cereal shots, but they were so popular that he expanded the idea to offer them as bigger bowls to help cure hangovers.

We wanted to the Cap'n Crunch with Kahlua but he had sold out, so we went with Honey Nut Cheerios and amaretto…

It’s a honey of an amarett-O…

Now, looking back at these pictures and remembering this meal, it’s really no surprise why I loved Co. Cheese as much as I did!

Sunday Brunch

Would Love To Do Some Crunches After Brunch With Dougie Flockhart Of The Doncaster Knights. He Has A Errol Flynn Quality About Him…Quite The Swashbuckler.

Dougie Is A Perfect Early Birthday Present To A North Carolina Lad I’ve Had The Pleasure Of Meeting! Here’s To You, Stud!

Woof, Baby!

Is it too early to think about my summer wardrobe inspiration?

This summer is going to be filled with days working on the No Name Farm and at The Publishing House, but what about weekend trips to Cape May, jaunts around Fishtown, the occasional day at the MET, and a two week road trip down the West Coast. Brunches, crunches (as in snacking on things that crunch), adventures, and more.
