On Felt: Precursor of The Clientele

Before I begin to break down The Clientele’s own music, we have to talk about their most important precursor — the artist that brought Alasdair MacLean and James Hornsey together in the first place.

Enigmatic from the start, Felt was founded in 1979 by a man with no surname simply called “Lawrence” as an outlet for his obsession with Tom Verlaine — a noticeable influence given his caustic vocal delivery. Lawrence aspired to the kind of stardom borne out of Andy Warhol’s Factory, so he maintained a prolific but strange workflow: 10 albums and 10 singles in 10 years and nothing more.
