Visits from the Netherlands to Denmark are always special as the two countries share a close relationship. Queen Margrethe is King Willem Alexander’s godmother and he and Maxima are close to the Danish Crown Princely couple. The visit had a number of times to build on that relationship in a diplomatic field. The couple met with the Prime Minister and attended a number of visits designed to promote collaboration, including in healthcare and wellbeing. One of their key themes was the environment. They spent their second day in Samsø, an island which emits no Carbon Monoxide and is a hallmark of energy efficiency. They were welcomed by the Mayor- who is Dutch born- after discussing the environment with business and government leaders on the ferry ride over, and they followed up by touring a facility which heats 300 homes by burning straw and the Energy Academy to discuss renewable alternatives. Of course, the royal fandom was mostly interested in the glamorous occasions! Margrethe hosted a State dinner complete with tiaras and sashes, and the Dutch royal couple returned the favour by hosting a return event which saw a performance of a well known Dutch dance group. The occasion was one of the warmer royal visits and made for plenty of wonderful photo opportunities.
