crouching venus

Detail of the Lely Venus, an ancient Roman copy of a Greek original by Doidalses of Bithynia. While the original Greek statue would have dated to the mid 3rd century BCE, the copy dates to the Antonine period (138-192 CE). Currently located in the British Museum. Photo taken by Faces of Ancient Europe.

I’ll screenshot from the MV as I see and recognize pieces.

The Fall of the Rebel Angels“ by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

“Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Michelangelo’s “Pietà”. A beautiful sculpture of the Virgin Mary -> Mother -> MAMA -> J-HOPE

The painting in the back is shown repeatedly and it’s “The Lament for Icarus” by Herbert James Draper. The ceiling was a little harder for me to see but it looks like the ceiling in Ljubljana Cathedral painted by Giulio Quaglio the Younger. The painting on the right is yet again “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus.” Who knows? With the way Jungkook is positioned in the room, perhaps he is Icarus falling from the sky.

This part’s a doozy because I can’t get a clear view of these sculptures but someone pointed that the bronze sculpture near Jin here is “Perseus with the Head of Medusa” by Benvenuto Cellini! The sculpture on the far right (the torso) looks like a portion of “Laocoon and His Sons” by the Greek sculptors Hagesander, Athenodoros, and Polydorus.

This resembles one of the many Crouching Venus sculptures out there. Particularly the Vénus Accroupie held at the Musée du Louvre.

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” - Friedrich Nietzsche.

Here we had another quote from Herman Hesse’s “Demian” as read by Rap Monster. “He too was a tempter. He too was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer wanted to have anything to do.”

Oh and one more thing. In the opening of the video, the choral singing from around 0:27-0:50, does anyone know what song that is? My friend thinks it’s Mozart’s Requiem Lacrimosa but I’m personally leaning more toward it being Bach’s Mass in B Minor (Kyrie Eleison).

The large winged statue at the end that Jin kisses I think might be Icarus too but I’m not sure. I don’t recognize it. Bangtan used A LOT of Renaissance pieces in their MV which may in itself be a reference to BTS entering their own period of rebirth/renaissance. They’re all adults now and it’s a new chapter for them. These were the pieces I saw in the video. Let me know if you see any others that I missed.

The Garden of Wonders.

I sketched out a super rough preliminary version of this about a year ago and I just rediscovered it in my old sketchbook, so voila!
All my favorite bad bitches of the ancient world are included:
-Venus of Willendorf
-Venus De Milo
-Nike of Samothrace
-Cretan Snake Goddess
-Hellenistic Marble Torso of Aphrodite
-Statue of Crouching Aphrodite
-Venus of Lespugue

I could totally see this as a pin in the future, soft enamel, & 2 inches or so.

I am loving this tablet so much!
All the love
