DIY Green Witch Portable Altar

If you’re like me, and like to bring your earthy witchcraft with you this is the DIY for you.

cost breakdown and materials:

✨ Wood box - $2.99 from craft store (but most stores have coupons)

✨ Stain - $4.99 (a small bottle will last you forever)

✨ Moss - $5 from a craft store (I’m sure you can fine it somewhere cheaper)

(side note: I don’t recommend getting it from the ground. It can lead to mold/bugs/allergy issues)

✨ Hot glue

✨ Acrylic Paint and brushes

Prep your box by sanding down any rough edges, removing any stickers, as well as making sure it’s dry and clean.

Stain your box. You can use a rag or brush to apply stain. Read the directions on your stain bottle, and wipe off extra stain. I love wood stain.

The latch has an eagle on it :)

After your stain is dry prep for the sky. You can prep with gesso or just white acrylic paint. This will make your colors pop more. I just dove in with painting, but if you want really crisp border lines use masking tape.

While waiting for the white to dry I hot glued in some moss. It takes the glue really well, but retains its fluffiness.

Add your night sky. To avoid having to paint tons of layers because your paint is transparent, ad a little white in. For the sky I mixed white, black, and blue, and left it a little unblended for a foggy feel.

Ad stars. I chose Cassiopeia, Polaris, and the Big Dipper. Use a tooth pic to get small dots.

Add in your items. I didn’t have a tea candle so I made a temporary candle from a shell. I also added some jars for herbs and a couple of crystals.

JuminZen Week - Day 6: Cherry Blossoms Festival // Food

Did I choose this prompt just to show off my vacation photos of cherry blossoms from my trip to Korea two years ago? YOU BET. Also, they’re eating ddeokbokki coz it was EVERYWHERE when I went to Korea.

where i find my modern gods

Morpheus is in the legs that fall asleep and the eyes you can’t keep open, and the endless cups off coffee that didn’t work, caffeine immunity creeping in. He’s the sand in your eyes the day after an allnighter, coaxing you to pause, letting you know the world can wait a few hours. In the vivid daydreams and dizzy thoughts that conjure themselves into vision even when you don’t close your eyes. He’s the sudden smells that take you back a decade and are gone as quickly as they come.

Hades stands not in graveyards but on every corner and every bridge. He crosses the street with you as you contemplate the oncoming cars. Dutiful accountant, he knows your name, and it waits on his tongue. He’s not there to rush you, nor help you. Perhaps his presence is enough. Even in ideation, Hades is in cold fingers and forgotten teas, crumbled leaves that tell you he’s taken her away again. He’s in the rinds of fruit and discarded husks, the plucked leaves, the end, always waiting at the core of everything.

Persephone is in the fresh fruit, ripe and ready to burst, eating them, destroying them feels like a sin, like delicious betrayal. She’s the first sharp bite and the way the juice rolls down your chin, in the decisions you hold steadfastly onto. she’s in defiant stares and the way you walk in like you own the place, because as long as she’s by your side, you do. When people whisper your name and pretend they don’t see you, she’s there, by your side, lifting your chin. Fear may also be hate, but it is also fear, and that is your power.

Aphrodite is in the crisp line of lipstick, and the boldness of a sharp cateye, but also the next day when it’s smeared and freckled with chipped mascara, the glance in the mirror when you see yourself like this and shrug, ‘not so bad’. She’s in the burst of warmth and weak you feel when you watch a child laugh with its grandmother. She’s there in that moment you fit into those jeans, she’s there when you slip into sweatpants and have a second slice of cake. When you shit talk your ex she’s there, nodding and making sure you know he was no good for you.

Dionysus walks in when your friends do, carrying his revelry on their shoulders. With a bottle of champagne, -a treat-, he's not so much in drinking it as he is shaking it up and popping the cork, the laughter and the mess that ensues, the sticky fingers that last the night. He’s there in the morning next as well, surveying the damage and grinning like a king when you scrape chips off the couch.

Beating Brush Lag in Manga Studio

Booooooooo… what is this, Photoshop?!

Lagging brushes are an occasional problem in any illustration software. Here’s a troubleshooting guide for Manga Studio if your tools are acting like molasses. (Some settings may be different on Windows or if you’re running the Clip Studio Paint branding of the software. For what it’s worth, I’m running Manga Studio 5.0.3 on Mac OS 10.7.5. Yup, I’m behind the times.)

There are a few options to beat the lag:

1. Quit Stuff
Bye bye, YouTube. See ya, Skype. Later, Tumblr.

Save your computer’s processor by quitting RAM-hogging apps and tasks while painting. Streaming audio/video will drastically reduce performance, but even leaving browsers open can slow things down, so best to just close it up. Guess that rules out Spotify, but then there’s always ye olde Zune. Gotta love cringing through those high school playlists while working.

2. Change Preferences
Easier than changing your mind, and quicker too.

Check under the hood of Manga Studio’s Preferences for a few speed boosts. Do the following in these sub menus:

Preferences/Tablet/Tablet Settings: Change from 1 to 6 (I believe this option is Mac only).

Preferences/Performance/Undo: Lower the Undo count. Try taking it down 10-15 notches from default. You could also turn up that long-titled setting (“Delay before recognizing new object…”) by 100 ms, but I haven’t figured out what that does exactly…

Preferences/Cursor/Display Position of Reversed Cursor: Make sure to check “No Delay”.

After changing preferences, it’s a good idea to close and reopen Manga Studio.

3. Modify Brush Tool Settings
Your brushes may take it personally, but remember you’re in charge here.

The Tool Settings window is a wealth of options for customizing brushes. Some are more processor-intensive than others. Here are a few of the best ones to modify: (Note: the look and behavior of brushes may be affected. You may want to duplicate and/or export a brush before changing its settings.)

Tool Settings/Anti-Aliasing: Turn down to “Little” or “None”

Tool Settings/Brush Tip: Reduce the number of materials on your brush.

Tool Settings/Stroke/Space: Increase spacing, but not too much. Brushes are essentially a string of material stamps. A low space setting means a smoother brush, but more work for your computer. Picture it frantically scrubbing a rubber stamp across your canvas. On that note, also make sure Continuous Spraying is not on.

Tool Settings/Watercolor Border: If your brush uses this setting, turn on the “Process After Drag” option. This renders the effect after each brush stroke and saves computing power.

Tool Settings/Correction: Turn off (or decrease) Stabilization, Post Correction, and Brush Stroke.

Tool Settings/Starting and Ending: Turn off all this stuff. Pfffft, who needs it, right?

Here’s a speed test after fiddling with some settings:

Woooooooo! We’re getting faster! Still a bit laggy, which leads to one last tip:

4. Rework The Canvas
Might as well rework my life goals too.

Okay, disclosure: The two gifs in this post were recorded on a 4500x3000 canvas at 300dpi with a size 500 brush to emphasize lag. This third one is recorded on a 1080x720 canvas at 72dpi with a size 100 brush:

Yes! We’re cruising now!

Canvas sizing and resolution has a big affect on brush performance. It’s a bit of a conundrum. Getting the best image quality means working at a minimum resolution of 300dpi, which can be taxing for brushes on large canvases. So what to do? Just like traditional paintings start with thumbnail sketches, digital work can start on a low-resolution canvas. Here’s the method:

Set up your canvas normally at the full target resolution. But before drawing anything on the canvas, use the handy tool under Edit/Change Image Resolution. Reduce Resolution to 72dpi. Use this smaller canvas for rough sketching, background filling, blocking in large areas of color, etc. Then increase resolution to 144dpi for building up the body of the painting, still keeping it loose. (I’d recommend switching Interpolate to Hard Outline when increasing resolution.) Finally, blow it up to full resolution and get into the nitty gritty of rendering. This is where you’ll do the crisp line work, highlights, details, etc.

The idea here is to work big to small. This will keep away brush lag by using large brushes on small canvases. As the canvas resolution increases, decrease brush size and work smaller, tightening things up in the process. NOTE: Increasing canvas resolution causes pixilation. Don’t worry about it. This can be cleaned up in the final stages of painting.

Hope this guide is helpful! If lagging persists, remember to check drivers and tablet settings as well. If all else fails, Google’s a good friend ;)

Samhain Cinnamon Apple Crisps

Hi everyone, hope you’re all well. I’ve just finished cooking up a batch of my own homemade Apple Crisps and thought I would share this wonderful and super quick recipe with you. Not only is this speedy snack great for Samhain/Halloween,  it contains ingredients used for protection etc, can be used as an offering for your God or Goddess, is a healthy variation to supermarket bought crisps AND is suitable for vegans/vegetarians, did I already mention they are super quick to make? Without further ado, let’s get started!

You will need:

  • 1 whole apple.
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon.
  • A dash of brown sugar. ( You can use white sugar but I prefer brown as it produces a lovely thick syrup texture and has a gorgeous coffee flavouring to it ).

How to make:

  • Cut your apple into thin slices. Not too thin or they will burn and not to thick or they won’t turn into crisps!
  • Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper.
  • Place your apple slices onto your tray and start to add your toppings. Use as much as you wish.
  • Cook your apple slices in the oven on gas mark 4/ 180°C / 350°F for fifteen minutes. ( A few of my crisps did burn, so depending on how thin you cut your apple and how powerful your oven is, feel free to change the time and settings ).

Ingredients used in Witchcraft:

  • Cinnamon: Associated with the elements of fire and the sun. Magikal uses are - good luck, love, money, passion, peace, prosperity, protection, psychic development, success and wisdom.
  • Apples: Scared to many Goddessses including Aphrodite. Magikal uses are - fidelity, fertility, marriage, beauty, vanity, wisdom, the soul, the afterlife and immortality.
  • Brown Sugar: Healing, love and sweetness.

That’s all there is to it! I hope you enjoyed this recipe and your finished product. Please do not remove the source and have a safe, happy and blessed Samhain. Let me know how your Apple Crisps turn out!

Been rewatching a lot of Inuyasha lately, I almost forgot how much I love Sesshomaru’s beautiful ass.

All my silver wigs have dark roots so I thought I’d just go for black haired Lord Sesshomaru 💕✨

I can’t get over how tragic John Silver has effectively become by the finale.  There are two two lines that stay with me about the ending: Fuck him for dictating this outcome to me. The last scene between Flint and Silver foretells what’s to come for John- everything that Flint forewarns will have effectively come true by Treasure Island. John will reach a moment in which the life he sacrificed so much for will feel insufficient- and if we are to truly believe that ethereal, glorious Madi Scott will one day become obscured to a life as inn keeper or if, perhaps more realistically, she simply will have to live her life with the constant what if of having accomplished abolition, I think we can see how the life Silver afforded them will feel too small, too suffocating for them both.

The other line is when Silver raises a gun to Flint, saying that the cycle of choosing between lives, aspirations, and loves has to end. When I see that shot of Silver standing on the cliff where he and Flint once trained, my chest gets tight with the tragedy of it: with how much Madi loves Flint and will never see him again, will never have had gotten to say goodbye. with how much Silver loves Flint and will have to live with the fact that ending the cycle of Flint’s war meant choosing between loves all the same. One day, I think, Silver will realize the world was wide enough for all of them, if he didn’t realize it in that moment where Madi still anguished even after hearing what became of Flint and (god bless Luke Arnold) Silver looks as if the world has come crashing down on him. He’ll always feel that a part of his mind is shared with Flint, that a part of his heart is still truncated in the thought of him. He’ll stand by that cliff often and he’ll look out into the thin, crisp line where sky and ocean meet and he won’t be looking for Nassau. He’ll be looking for Flint. He’ll be aching with the string of his sacrifice, of having been too blinded to strive towards a different end.

Madi will carry Flint in every book she loves. Madi will remember him in her own ambition, in her own zealousness. When the world isn’t as it should be, as it could’ve been, she’ll remember him. When she commands her people or speaks to them with authority, she’ll think of all the people who contributed to her ability to lead: her father, her mother, and a close and precious friend.

So, for me, the tragedy of Silver isn’t just that one day he’ll be doomed to become a corrosion of Long John Silver, with a boy named Jim Hawkins desperate to understand. The tragedy isn’t just that Madi, like Silver, may have to contend with obscurity and the loss of power as he does, perhaps more so than he does. But it’s that their hearts will always ache for the man who toils far across the sea, reunited at last with his love. There will always be a place in thier hearts where Flint’s memory will stay, where they’ll miss him, where they’ll wish Silver had found some other alternative than to keep Flint and Thomas so far away. Silver is always going to go back to that cliff and the degree to which he fucked up will have to be something he lives with. He didn’t want to continue a cycle of war where he would have to negotiate between loves, between happinesses, but he does. He has and it’s a decision done in love. A part of him, I think, will never stop loving and longing and mourning for Flint, for the loss of him, for the pain of never seeing him again. But Flint will be with Thomas, happier than he ever imagined to be, happy as Flint deserves. and Silver will go on thinking that his decision woke James McGraw from a long and terrible sleep. And so the decision comes to this. If you love someone, set them free.

Jealousy’s A Bitch

Pairing: Klaus x Damon x Reader

Warnings: None

Word Count: 1987

Today you’re supposed to meet up with your friend, Bonnie at The Grill. You arrived there before she did, so you decided to sit at the bar. Sadly, after 20 minutes of waiting, she texts you saying:

‘Sorry, Y/N. Something came up with Jeremy. I’ll make it up to you.’

You sighed after the reading the text because you were looking forward to hanging out with Bonnie since you haven’t seen her in weeks. “I’m already here, I might as well have a drink or two.” You thought to yourself.

“I got this round. Get me the usual.” Damon demands to the bartender, sitting at the stool to your right.

“Thanks, Damon.” You smiled at Damon.

“Yup.” He popped his lips. “So what brings you here, being a loner and all?”

“Bonnie bailed on me.” You replied.

“Witches.” Damon rolled his eyes, then picked up his drink to cheers with you. You couldn’t lie though, Damon is very attractive with that crisp jaw line and gorgeous blue eyes, but, as your hybrid friend, Klaus once said, he’s an ‘arse’.

From the corner of your eye, you see Klaus and Kol enter The Grill. He saw you from afar and decided to give you a wave.

Oh, Niklaus Mikaelson. Something about him intrigued you. You couldn’t lie to yourself that overtime, you grew some sort of feelings for this hybrid of a man. The Mikaelson’s mansion was a place you visited regularly to hang out with one of your best friends, Rebekah. Weirdly, whenever Klaus was home, it made you happy. Sometimes, he even made you nervous. Although he is a “bad boy” to most, he was always kind to you.

Instead of sitting at a table or walking towards the bar, Klaus and Kol went straight to the pool table. It bummed you out a little because you’d rather be hanging out with them instead of Damon. You didn’t want to seem desperate by going up to them, so you just stayed where you were.

20 minutes later…

The past 20 minutes consisted of drinking two more rounds with Damon. By this time, you were already feeling a bit tipsy. Every couple of minutes, your eyes would wander to see what Klaus was up to.

Damon received a call on his phone from Alaric, so he excused himself to the bathroom to take the call. Again, you couldn’t resist so you looked again to see was Klaus was doing. It was perfect timing (sarcastically) because some random girl comes up to him to talk. From your view, she sat up on the edge of the pool table chatting with Klaus, while he stood about 2 feet away, grinning at her. It did make you quite jealous because you wanted to be in her spot right now. Being the human that you are, you wished you had vampire hearing so that you could hear what they were talking about.

Damon returns which gave you the idea to boost your self esteem a little. Yes, it’s wrong to use people, but this is Damon we’re talking about here. No harm done.

“So, where were we?” He sat down in his original spot, smirking while raising a brow. In response, you started twirling a piece of hair with your finger. The alcohol was already getting to the both of you, so everything was somewhat a blur right now. “Oh yeah. That pretty little number you’re wearing is very…tempting.” Damon gave you the elevator look.

“Oh is it?” With your elbow leaning on the counter top, you rested your chin on your hand, slowly inching yourself closer to Damon. Damon notices so he scoots over closer to you, then starts slowly rubbing his hand on your thigh.

One more round later and you found Damon holding your hand to guide you to his car. You failed to walk with balance, but you didn’t care because you were drunk. What you didn’t realize is that Klaus noticed you leave The Grill with Damon, with knowledge of what that is going to lead to.

…….

Luckily for you, you still had your morals. Although it was tempting at first, you didn’t let the alcohol get to your head by sleeping with Damon. So instead, you had a bright idea to have some fun by blasting music while dancing around the living room with Damon. He respected your change of plan and was up for whatever you wanted to do.

Sadly, it wasn’t long until your fun ended because it awoke Stephen which led to him shutting down your two person party. Damon turned off the music, then you both made your way to his bedroom, taking two glasses and a decanter filled with liquor with you.

“No sex alright?” You chuckled, setting the glasses and decanter on the nightstand. After that, you removed a few articles of clothing, leaving your shirt, bra and panties on.

“Fine by me. Go ahead and get your cuddle on.” Damon removed his shirt and pants, then covered the lower half of his body with his blanket.

You sat up on the bed, then reached over to pour yourself a glass of liquor.

The next couple of hours led to the both of you talking about your life, his vampire life. Still being a little drunk, you even brought up your little crush on Klaus. If you were sober, you wouldn’t have.

“Klaus?” Damon looked at you confused. “That dude’s a murdering maniac.”

You rolled your eyes at Damon. “And you are?” I mean you had a point. Damon isn’t an angel and neither is Stefan. Stefan had his ‘Ripper’ phase.

“Touche.” Damon scowled, then got up to point at the empty glass and decanter on the nightstand for you to hand to him. After he filled ¼ of his glass, he raised his glass to cheers with you. “A toast.”

“For?” You questioned.

“A fun, sex-less night.” He chugged his glass. You let out a laugh as a response before chugging yours. “You know. You’re not too shabby. Tonight was fun.” Damon added on.

……

After about an hour of non stop chit chatting, you fell asleep in Damon’s bed. The following morning, Damon was still asleep, so you put on the rest of your clothes and your shoes, then headed home to freshen up and make yourself brunch.

The food you cooked left you satisfied, so you spent the next couple of hours watching Netflix. Eventually, you got bored so you texted Rebekah to let her know that you’re stopping by to hang out.

You got inside your car and still no word from Rebekah, but you oh well, you had your own key copy to The Mikaelson’s mansion, so you headed there anyways.

16 minutes later you arrived, parking your car on the large driveway. Before entering the home, your phone vibrated, so you pulled it out of your purse to see a text from Rebekah:

‘I’m on my way home from the store. I’ll be there soon.’

Entering the home it was silent and the first person you saw was Klaus resting on the couch drawing. He didn’t look up to say hi to you at all. You figured he was just too caught up in his drawing that he wasn’t aware of his surroundings, so you made your presence known saying, “Hi Nik.”

Nothing. Not a word came out of his mouth. It was obvious by now that he was giving you the cold shoulder, so you tried again to get a peep out of him by walking up closer to him, waving your hand in front of you at your eyes’ view. “Hello?”

“Oh hey.” Niklaus replied sternly. But still, he didn’t look up to make eye contact with you, he just kept his eyes at his drawings.

You put your hands on your hips, looking at him in confusion. “Okay seriously, whats going on. Are you mad at me?” After knowing Klaus for months now, you already knew that whenever he is drawing or painting, he doesn’t act this standoffish, he’s normally more talkative with you.

Klaus took a deep breath in, then stood up, leaving his drawing on the couch. By the looks of it, he looked like he was ready to snap at you, but instead he put his bad temper aside, leaving a sly grin on his face. “Well. I’m not mad, love.” You sighed in relief to his response, then he added, “but I am disappointed in you just a tad.”

You crossed your arms in front of your chest. “What are you talking about?”

“Oh. Well. I don’t know. Maybe going home with Damon doing god knows what.”

“Wait what?” You glared. “First of all, I didn’t even sleep with Damon. And second of all, why does it matter if I go home with another man?”

Klaus didn’t respond. Instead, he glanced up at the ceiling then looked back at you. It irritated you, so you decided to add on, “And you shouldn’t be the one to talk. You were also having the time of your life with that brunette last night.” You’re right though. How come Klaus is all of a sudden making it his business? You were wondering what he was up to with this.

“I wasn’t, actually. I was just being a nice lad to the girl.” Klaus walked up closer to you. “And I might even hate myself for saying this.”

“Okay, now you’re confusing me.” You tilted your head, putting your hands back at your hips.

“I don’t know how and I don’t know what it is about you, love.” Klaus lowered his voice, making it sound crisp and soothing. Then, he walked up even closer with his face being just inches away from yours. You didn’t know where he was going with this, so you just stood there speechless, giving him the spotlight. “To my surprise and to yours, I’ve grown quite fond of you, Y/N.”

Your eyes widened and butterflies started making their way into your stomach. “You what?” Is he saying what you think he’s saying?

Niklaus wrapped his hands around your upper arms, then continued with his little speech, “If your feelings don’t match mine, that’s alright, love. I know that it’s hard for a fine lady like yourself to have mutual feelings for a monster like me. But I had the need to tell you.” You can see the sadness in his eyes after saying his part. He let go of the weight of his hands around your arms and let it fall, then he quickly looked away then looked back at you once he heard a peep out of your mouth.

“You know what?” You said, softening your tone of voice to express your feelings.

“What?” Klaus asked.

You rested both of your hands on Klaus’s chest, then made direct eye contact with him. “You don’t understand how long I’ve felt this way. I was too afraid to tell you because I was scared you wouldn’t feel the same. I didn’t want to ruin the friendship we already had.” It felt as if a huge weight has been lifted off of your shoulders, and to your relief, you were overjoyed that Klaus feels the same way about you.

“Well that’s just peachy then, sweetheart.” Klaus smiled, then grabbed both of your hands to slowly kiss at them both, making you blush.

The timing was hilariously perfect because in walks in Rebekah from the front door, struggling with her shopping bags, looking confused as ever seeing you and Klaus standing way too close to each other. You and Klaus just froze. To the both of you, it felt like you guys got caught making out in front of your parents or something.

Rebekah instantly sensed that something was going on, so she stopped what she was doing and asked, “What are you two doing?”

i get lots of questions about what kinds of pens i use, so i thought i’d make a post for convenience :’’) the x’s are links to posts where i’ve used the pen.

  • sakura pigma micron 01 (0.25mm) - i usually don’t like using pens with tips smaller than 0.5mm since i feel like i’m scratching the paper with them, but microns are felt tip so i can deal with it (heh). i like using this pen for when i have to cramp a lot of information in a small space. (x)
  • pilot precise v5 (0.5mm) - I LOVE THESE PENS!! A+ ink flow, crisp lines, and a v smooth writing experience. it takes a while for the ink to dry sometimes, so i use these mostly for when i’m rewriting notes instead of in-class notes. (x, x, x, x, x)
  • muji gel ink ballpoint (0.5mm) - i’m gonna be honest, i bought my first pack of muji pens about a month after i started my studyblr because everyone had them. but!! for all the hype they get, they are nice pens. v smooth & lots of color options!! my only qualms are that they run out of ink pretty fast and the ink tends to smear if you highlight over it. (x, x, x)
  • pentel rsvp fine (0.7mm) - my go-to pen for in-class notes! the ink doesn’t smear very much, which is excellent because i’m one of those people that writes everything down (oops). definitely not the best pen ever, but it does its job well. ALSO it has a grip which makes it v comfortable to write with!! (i started using it when i was making this review sheet, except it ran out of ink halfway through and i switched to using a bic cristal pen)
  • paper mate inkjoy 100 (1.0mm) - my other in-class notes pen! i use it less than the rsvp because it likes to transfer onto my hand more, but the ink is darker and it’s a wider pen. i’ll usually use it when i have to fill up more space and don’t want to write as much heh :^) (x, x)
  • uniball signo um-153 (1.0mm) - v nice if you’re looking for a pen that writes boldly and thickly!! i bought this pen not too long ago, so i haven’t written with it that much yet, but i’ll probably use it for headings or something like that (x)

FUN FACT these are all capped pens… i stay away from retractable pens because i’m one of those people that clicks them constantly if i have one in my hands (ㅠᴗㅠ)

Fantastic Four Annual #19 inked by Joe Sinnott
Avengers Annual #14 inked by Kyle Baker

In 1985, John Byrne pencilled two annuals that were released in the same month. While Roger Stern wrote the Avengers story and Byrne wrote the FF story, the two storylines converged in a truly unique crossover that uses the same breakdowns for both stories, albeit with different letterers, colorists, and most notably, inkers.

One may be hard-pressed to find two inkers with more contrasting styles: Joe Sinnott, one of Marvel’s all-time greats who gave a gorgeous polish to Kirby’s FF, provides classic, crisp, and clean lines; while then-newcomer Kyle Baker brings more texture and expression to his faces.

When I these books came out, I remember laying the two books open to the same pages, examining how much an inker contributes to the process.

In retrospect, it reminds me of this page from Comics Scene magazine in which they showed how four different inkers can affect the same pencils (by Mike Zeck).

The Zodiac as Art & Why

Aries: dance
The intensity and freedom in dance complements the whirlwind of energy that is Aries. There need not be technique for it to be beautiful, and this gives the Cardinal Fire sign the space to release their electricity through movement in a display of untamed & elusive intensity.

Taurus: landscaping
Taurus long to live in a world of manifest beauty. They have an eye for aesthetic refinement and a taste for palpable delight; these things could be put to good use in the dirt, among trees, within flower buds. They could return Earth to its Eden state, one backyard garden at a time.

Gemini: painting
The Gemini mind, full of noise and vividity, is perpetually fabricating mental pictures. Their heads may overflow if they don’t release some of it. The blank canvas never interrupts; it absorbs the message and beauty that is placed upon it in the form of color and brushstrokes of genius.

Cancer: photography
Cancers live in memories. They cherish beautiful things gone by perhaps more than they savor the present. To be able to capture their lives and immortalize themselves & the things they adore through the art of photography would save them from trapping themselves in homes that the past has burned down.

Leo: acting
Performing emotions is a concept the passionate Leo will be fascinated by. Nothing is real under the spotlight, and at the same time, it’s the only thing that is real. The stage is a sanctuary where the lion is allowed to roar as loud as they can, to set themselves on fire and be showered in applause for it.

Virgo: drawing
The tip of the pen or pencil which drags crisp lines across a bright white page is a metaphor for Virgo’s pursuit of perfection. There is precision, prestige, and purity in the visual elegance of picture-making which is something that matches the Mutable Earth sign like nothing else can.

Libra: fashion
Libras belong in the imaginary heavens they are capable of creating. Their perceptible, corporeal sophistication would fit in amongst angels in costume, the caricatures of loveliness, the twinkling lights and sparkling catwalk; they would have everyone in awe, and they would finally be at home.

Scorpio: cinematography
Film can be one of the sickest art forms, and it is always one of the rawest. There are no lies in cinema, and yet, when fictional, it is all lies. It allows the Scorpion to uncover and lay bare the bloody truth without staining their hands, gives them the freedom to let all the secrets spill without telling anyone a thing.

Sagittarius: sculpting
Sagittarius are always looking for something to make their mark on, whether it be a city or a person. They want to leave behind the signature of their experience. They can mold philosophies with their bare hands and display the wilderness of their discoveries in the marble or clay for all to admire.

Capricorn: architecture
Building empires is what the Capricorn was made for. They are destined to rule over the kingdom they put together brick by brick, whether it is large or real enough to live in or not. A tangible masterpiece to call their own would by the kryptonite of their self-doubt & worldly silence.

Aquarius: music
Music is inexplicable. It’s the sweetest form of sorcery, an alien language, the foreign yet familiar exchange of ideas and emotions through often wordless waves of sound. It allows the boundless Aquarius mind to explore and delve deep into their creativity, to experiment, to express their genius.

Pisces: poetry
Nothing penetrates the soul like a well-crafted poem. It can gently caress you or cruelly batter you, save or kill you, fill you with love or hate, open or close your eyes; either way, it will send you into rapture, whether purely delightful or bittersweet. It gives Pisces a place to show who they really are beyond the fog.

Hi Erica, I'm wondering what other skills are required to be a storyboard artist in the animation industry like you. The level of draftsmanship required in that field seems so simple. Maybe TOO simple. I've been told by employed 2d animators in the gaming industry and several other artists that my figure drawings are very solid. Not meaning to toot my horn, I still need to improve. But is there something I'm missing? Is there like some kind of a catch? Are people with no degrees glossed over?

Hi! You’re asking if there’s more to storyboarding than good drawing skills. And the short answer is: YES!!

Long answer: Drawing skills are the bare minimum when it comes to boarding. It’s the base skill that every other skill grows off of. Most importantly: cinematography! A beautiful drawing is useless is if your cuts don’t make sense. Or if you’ve got bad staging. Or tangents. Or you’re crossing the 360 too often. Or your acting is off. Or your pacing is weird. The list goes on and on!

Yes, you need to know how to draw, you need to know basic perspective and anatomy, and then from that knowledge, you need to learn to do it in shorthand; loose, fast, and efficient while still communicating everything clearly. That is why storyboards look the way they do! Gorgeously detailed drawings are near pointless in storyboards, and to be plain, there is no time for it. I actually know a storyboard artist who was fired (yes, fired!) for being too detailed. He was falling behind.

Background artists are responsible for beautifying the environment with wonderful detail and crisp, clean lines, and colorists are responsible for beautifying those lines with amazing hues and shadows and lighting. Our job is to rough! Out! That! Story!

Hope this helped you. Good luck on your journey to boarding!

I’ve Got You Under My Skin

You take a deep breath as you climb out of the shuttle that has just delivered you to your new post as head nurse on the U.S.S. Enterprise.  Looking around, you’re already thrown by the ship’s grandeur – its shuttle bay alone is easily three times the size of the one on the Enyo.  As your gaze travels back down from the ceiling, you’re met with the sight of the captain, the first officer, and another man standing in the doorway to the rest of the ship.

“Welcome aboard,” he addresses you and the handful of other new crew members standing around you.  “My name is James Tiberius Kirk and I’ll be your new captain. To my right is Commander Spock, my first officer, and to my left you’ll find our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Leonard McCoy.  I trust you’re all ready to devote yourselves to this ship and its mission.”

You and the others nod and the captain continues with a bright and easy smile.

Demon King Oikawa doodle to test some sumi ink brush settings in Photoshop… I’m not really satisfied as it’s about 80% close to how I manually ink. Photoshop’s inks still can’t hold a candle to SAI though in terms of clean, crisp lines though. Still trying to find a more effective way of drawing rather than switching back and forth between PS/SAI T_T;
