What traits to you suggest to put in a dystopian / thriller protagonist?

Good question darling, I’ll do you a list. Also, I’ll probably be adding to this when I have an idea in the future. I want to start by saying- you can have your own swing on this and people have different opinions, so if your ideas aren’t on here, feel free to add them in the replies! What would you recommend to someone writing a dystopian-thriller protagonist character? Here we have some ideas of character traits for a Dystopian-Thriller Protagonist:

  • The tiniest sliver of hope- Dystopian characters only really stick around if there is something/someone worth sticking around for, keep it in mind!
  • Confusion- What have they been hidden/protected from? What are they in the dark about?
  • Determination- I think that one is quite self-explanatory.
  • Moral support- This isn’t really coming from the protagonist, but the supporting characters. 
  • Remember that your protagonist will have down days, like any normal person, make sure you include that!
  • Hidden/dark past? It’s not compulsory, but the majority of dystopian stories I’ve read have at least one character with a dark past.
  • Despair- (On the bad days).
  • Hidden emotions- I think this one is something we sometimes miss out on for all characters, but try to think about whether they have a contrasting side to their usual self. Not just “The angry guy has a soft side”, but maybe think more in-depth. Think about how this angry dude reacts when he finds a scrawny 4 year old hidden beneath rubble and adopts her. Alternatively you could have a really shy, innocent looking girl who seems to be the kinkiest person on the planet… It all depends on your novels!
  • Emotional- This sort of links in with the last one and, yes, all characters are emotional, but dystopian/thriller characters have seen a lot. In most dystopian stories that I’ve read, the protagonist and/or supporting characters have seen some rather awful things. As much as they may pretend they’re okay, they’re going to be emotional characters!

Honestly, this changes for all characters, but these are some key ones that I’ve noticed in books and they have proved to be successful! Anyway, I hope it helped a little, good luck and feel free to message me if I didn’t get what you meant, lot of love from Yasmine xox

“Who says Cosplay is unproductive?”

I come from a family who really disliked me cosplaying for a long time, saying it is “unproductive”.

My success in national competitions and event invites had started to change their minds.
But what ultimately convinced them was… me helping fix shit around the house.

Today my dad’s shoe went all weird and crumbly. He was going to have to buy new shoes or new sole pads… But then I went and traced some foam, layered it and padded his shoe back up, for free.

My mum has weak finger joints. The doctors were going to charge her $200 to make her a brace. But I saw what the brace was like, and casted her one with Plasti-make, again for free. She had never struggled with her joint again.

I’d like to spread the message to parents out there:
Cosplay is not unproductive.
It is a form of creative problem solving. (How do make something work?)

Please encourage your kids to do something creative. If it’s making outfits from fictional characters… Then please let them.
Watch them become jacks of all trades and develop their hands on and DIY skills.

The sun has just entered Pisces, marking the start of the very last sign’s season before the new Zodiac year begins. Pisces’ energy is currently very strong because Neptune (its ruler) is posited in it. From the 25th to the 27th of February, there’s a Pisces stellium composed of the sun, moon, Mercury, & Neptune, as well as Pallas and Chiron. This will be an intensely emotional period for many. Sensitivities of all kinds will overwhelm us, but since it’s a new moon and an Aries stellium (moon, Venus, Mars, Uranus) immediately follows, it should also be cleansing. The next few weeks will be a hurricane of feelings, delusions, strange dreams, psychic intake, and then volatility, powerful urges, inspiration, and intensity. It will be a lot to handle. After March 10th, when Mars enters Taurus, things should begin to settle down, although there is still a heavy excess of planets unevenly distributed in these two signs.

The most important thing to maintain for these next few weeks is self-control. Don’t let your emotions & impulses overtake you. Use this abundance of intrapersonal activity to your advantage; do some soul-searching, be creative, sort out persistent problems through intuition and determination, etc. If you remain grounded, these next two months may be very fruitful for you.

Druid Week: Druids in the Game

As a DM:

Versatility:

Druids already have a huge part in most roles, so they don’t need much in terms of catering. A bard might need to feel more involved in a campaign, but a support druid can also provide utility, tankiness, damage… they can Wild Shape or cast a spell whenever they need anything! They are one of the most versatile classes in the entire game. If they need encouragement, give them a variety of challenges (as you should always be doing, really) to force them to take more creative problem-solving measures.

Environment:

Make unique landscapes and environments for the druid. You don’t have to do it every time, but every once in a while feel free to go overboard. Floating midair land masses, waterfalls that flow upward, geysers of acid, an insect hive the size of a city… just describe some beauty shot that can really tug at the druid’s magic-strings. They will be interested in the unique plants and animals and magic there, which can influence how you populate such a land. Not to mention the other players will love such a wondrous place, too.

Fauna:

One thing a lot of DMs forget is to give druids a place to excel. Druids fall flat inside an enclosed dungeon. Give them space out in the open; in the wild. Give the druid some non-magical beasts to interact with. DMs always forget that regular threats like lions, tigers, and bears exist and with a druid, these often turn into roleplaying encounters rather than combat ones. Speak with Animals, Animal Friendship, Beast Bond, Beast Sense, Animal Messenger, Dominate Beast, Locate Creature, and Commune with Nature can all interact with beasts in some way. Beasts are everywhere if the druid is looking for them.

Flora:

Another thing to keep in mind is plant life. I just did a whole two-part post about Herbalism as a more fleshed-out system for 5e. Part 1 is just a pipeline of dice tables to make up new herbs. The herb could play a minor role in a story or adventure, or it could simply be a useful tool that exists in your world. For instance, I once had some herbs with yellow flowers that would act as healing potions, but you could only eat them twice within 24 hours or you would get sick. Ever since then, the players could find those herbs elsewhere and have a unique source of HP instead of a boring old potion. Plus they have the a-ha moment of realizing they found something useful on their own instead of opening a chest and finding it there. Part 2 of the Herbalism Guide was more about how to use the herbs as potion ingredients, as medicine, and as spell components. If you want to go the extra mile or want ideas for what herbs could do, use it!

Mood:

Just like clerics, druids can have supernatural senses that can add to the mood of an adventure. Imagine if you were a druid PC and the DM says “The druid senses something off about this forest. It makes you feel sick.” or “This jungle is in agony. You empathize with its pain, which feels like insects stinging you all over your body, and you can almost hear the wails of the trees.” Druids could make an Insight check to try and feel how a beast is feeling in the same way. It singles out the druid, identifies the problem as environmental corruption, and enhances the mood. What more could a DM want.

As a Player:

Get the Most Out of the Game:

Ask your DM questions about the flora and fauna and traits of the setting. When you travel to a new area in-game, be sure to cast Commune with Nature and get a lay of the land. This can add to the experience and provide vital information on targets for Locate spells, herbalism, and beast-influencing spells. Don’t be afraid to ask your DM for strange things that might not exist in the standard rules like “Can my druid think of any herbs that could cure paralysis in this environment?” The DM might find that intriguing and make it a plot point (making things a bit easier on the DM and giving you a potential solution to your problems to boot).

Don’t be afraid to request unique creatures to Wild Shape into, even if they aren’t in the book! I don’t see jellyfish in the Monster Manual but if a player asked me for it, I would just turn them into a Poisonous Snake with no land speed and 10 ft. swim speed, but maybe increase the poison damage a tad. And heck, who says there aren’t Giant Jellyfish in the realm of D&D? Use a Giant Poisonous Snake for that! You could easily reskin monsters like that, especially for cosmetic reasons. In the tropics? Turn into a Giant Parrot instead of a Giant Eagle. In the tundra? Turn into a Snow Hare instead of a Badger to better hide in the snow. In the desert? Turn into a Coyote instead of a Wolf. There are so many animals in the world, there is no excuse for creativity on your end as a druid!

Wild Shape:

Optimize the usage of your Wild Shape. Pick the right animals for the right jobs!

  • Mobility/Scout: Giant Elk, Deer, Hyena, Horses, Flying Snake, Giant Owl, Giant Eagle, Giant Badger, Ape, Panther, Giant Toad, and Giant Crab all have either fast movement or unique movement (fly, swim, climb, burrow).
  • Tackle: Lion, Panther, Allosaurus, Giant Octopus, Crocodile, Giant Constrictor, Giant Toad, and Giant Crab can all knock enemies prone or restrain them.
  • Poison Damage: Poisonous Snake, Giant Scorpion, Giant Spider, and Female Steeder (OotA) all have poison that can deal damage to those not resistant.
  • Sustained Damage: Wolf, Giant Crocodile, Tiger, Giant Boar, Ape, and Dire Wolf all deal reliable damage and have adequate tank.
  • Tank: Warhorse, Black Bear, Giant Constrictor, Rhino, Ankylosaurus, Whale, Elephant, Hulking Crab, Triceratops, and Mammoth all have a bunch of HP and AC.
  • Spy: Mule, Horses, Cat, Frog, Crab, Snakes, and Spiders are great at hiding and some have blindsight! Crag Cat (SKT) has Nondetection as well!
  • Thumbs: APES HAVE THUMBS. Which means that they can manipulate things other animals can’t. Also: You can wield your weapons while in Wild Shape!

Other tips: use summoned minions or your allies to help flank enemies while in Wild Shape. Cast buffs before you Wild Shape, make sue they don’t require concentration if you want them to stack, otherwise you can at least concentrate on one thing while in Wild Shape. If you are in a long dungeon with little to no rest,  save Wild Shape for big fights when the tank is worn down or save it for utility when the other casters are low on spells. Also for grappler beasts knock the enemies down before you grapple. Then they can’t move and when they break grapple they can’t get back up as easily!

Spells:

Buffs: Druids are great for buff spells. Be sure to buff yourself before entering Wild Shape! ex: Enhance Ability, Faerie Fire, Longstrider, Barkskin, Stoneskin, Protection from Energy, Antilife Shell

Zoning: Druids have crowd control spells, but many of them control crowds through zoning. Take advantage of the fact that you are the largest influence on the surrounding environment. You get to change the battlefield to your advantage! These are big, flashy spells that make the druid fun. Use them to put obstacles in front of creatures to slow their advances, make it harder for creatures to dodge, provide cover for your party, or force enemies into a trap. “Oh there’s a Wall of Fire there I better go around it” [gets bottlenecked by ranged PCs instead of taking fire damage] ex: Wind Wall, Wall of Fire, Entangle, Plant Growth, Spike Growth, Flame Sphere, Sleet Storm, Insect Plague, Wall of Stone, Wall of Thorns, Bones of the Earth (such a cool spell)

Minions: In D&D 5e, most ACs are nearly the same thanks to Bounded Accuracy. So more attack rolls equals more damage. Minions help with this, and druids can get plenty using Conjure Elementals, Conjure Fey, Conjure Woodland Beings, and Conjure Animals! Not to mention spells like Awaken and Dominate Beast to get more allies.

Healing: Druids are good at healing. Note that Healing Word is a bonus action and has range, unlike Cure Wounds. Druids also get the Restoration spells and Reincarnate, which is less powerful than Resurrection and such, but hey it’s something!

Damage: Druids can output damage, mostly through their zoning spells, but also with some neat single-target spells. Note that Moonbeam and Blight are rare sources of Radiant and Necrotic damage, respectively.

Utility: Druids have utility. Various divination spells can break the game if you are clever. Several spells help you get where you want to go or get rid of enemy spells. Use them liberally unless you have a Wizard to lighten the necessity for utility spells. ex: Speak with Plants/Animals, Water Breathing, Animal Messenger, Pass Without Trace, Find Traps, Locate Object/Animals/Plants, Gust of Wind, Detect Poison/Disease, Detect Magic, Dispel Magic, Meld into Stone, Scrying, Tree Stride, Commune with Nature

The Signs as Magi

Aries: Explosive, always in motion. Magic rooted in their physical forms, powerful sweeping gestures blood pumping movements, and raw pulsing fury. Will more than likely just try and beat you up. Barely restrained and always looking to fight as it is, duel them at your own peril. Incredibly gifted when dealing with elementals.

Taurus: Potent hex-weavers and blessing-givers. Enchantments and curses, long-lasting and incredibly difficult to remove. Often very petty, was it chance your alarm didn’t go off and your pen exploded today? Who knows. Always bring one if you’re raiding a tomb. Responsible for every single noteworthy hereditary curse, hex, and jinx in magical history. 

Gemini: A chaotic mess, but an effective one. Notebooks full of ‘add a bit of powdered monkwood’ and haphazardly drawn sigils. Some of their most effective work is completely accidental and unrepeatable, often followed by an ‘I meant to do that.’ Very very prone to their own creations violently blowing up in their faces, they’ve gotten very good at dealing with explosions.

Cancer: Often underestimates their own successes, a jack-of-all-trades of spellcasting. Unsure exactly which phase of the moon to perform that exorcism? Ask a Cancer. Almost organic libraries full of every topic imaginable. Very creative, and frankly amazing problem solvers. For your own sake never EVER corner them.

Leo: Very flashy, and pretty. If you’re looking for masters of illusion and spectacle, look no further. Simply the BEST when it comes to the decor of their havens. Second only to Scorpios in their mastery of deception. Underestimate their deadliness at your peril though, their silver tongues are often forked. ALWAYS bring a blessed mirror when dealing with one.

Virgo: Very, and I mean VERY thorough. Usually has a spectacularly well tended garden of every kind of herb, weed, flower, and elemental flora imaginable. Very potent even if not immediately apparent. Incredibly practised and incredibly precise. Defensively impregnable. And for the love of all the gods and devils in all of the worlds do NOT fight them on their ground.

Libra: Diplomatic to a fault and brilliantly talented truthseers, wordsmiths, and hieromancers. Can and will talk their way out of almost any fight. Experts of defensive magic. A dazzling array of binding spells, seals, and law-sorcery. Give up after the first 3 layers of bureaumancy.

Scorpio: Unrivaled secret keepers and masters of malevolent subtlety. Layers upon webs upon stratagems of contracts, debts, and influences. Masters of puppetry and poison. Never ask a favour from them, just don’t. An incredible ally or fatal enemy. Best faced head on, and vulnerable to unexpectedness. Few things surprise them though.

Sagittarius: At the forefront of experimentation and research. Mind mages, intellectuals, and philosomancers. Absolute experts in finding loopholes and capable of extreme acts of brutality in the name of progress. Knowledgeable about their chosen fields, and often apprehensive about sharing their considerable expertise.

Capricorn: Very good combat mages and healers, very straightforward and efficient sorcery, not one for unnecessary flair or flamboyance. simplicity does not equate a lack of power, however. VERY aware of their own relative strength and chooses battles accordingly. Incredible calculating precision.

Aquarius: Some of the best necromancers, there are none better in manipulation of the flesh. Prone to hordes of minions, but dont worry, they grew the flesh, no animals were harmed in the construction of this shambling horror/sacrifice. Voted #1 most likely to lose soul in demonic contract in high school. Often misunderstood. Often benevolent. 

Pisces: The vaguest, and most terrifying mages. No one quite understands what they do or how they work. Masters of the most esoteric subjects, Time, Death, the Soul. Demonic, angelic, and fae ambassadors. Often very distant, rarely concern themselves with the concerns of this world. They never quite make eye contact with you. Prone to disappearing for long periods of time. Do not anger them.

Ideas for non-combat encounters/events

For when you want some variety for your tabletop RPG.  These events will also give your players a chance to use character skills they don’t often have opportunities for.

  • Natural Disaster - Have the town the PCs are in catch on fire and see what they do!  Do they cut their losses and run?  Do they heroically try to save trapped townspeople?  What do they do about the aftermath?  Natural disasters are an interesting challenge because there can be lots of danger and drama without necessarily having a villain.  It may also get your PCs to use skills they don’t commonly have a chance to.  You could also try floods, earthquakes, raging storms while at sea, etc.
  • Powerful Fortress - Put one of your party’s goals in a location where they won’t be able to prevail through combat alone (Example: a fortress where they are vastly outnumbered).  Your players will have to rely on either stealth or guile (or both) to accomplish their goal.  The pacing of such events can be frustrating to some players, but few sessions are as rewarding as a creatively executed heist or infiltration.
  • Dangerous Crossing - Give them a dangerous physical obstacle to overcome.  A canyon, or a raging river, or quicksand or an old battleground littered with traps and mines.
  • Festival - Have the PCs encounter a festival or tournament!  With lots of contests! This could be a good opportunity for them to build their fame and fortune (especially if you allow gambling).  Some of my favorite sessions have involved festivals.
  • Entertainment - Put the PCs in a situation where they have to entertain someone.  What do they come up with?
  • Letter - Have one of the PCs receive a letter, either from an NPC they’ve dealt with before or from someone involved with their backstory.  This is a good way to make the consequences of their actions seem more real.  You can also use it to introduce new plotlines/sidequests.
  • Crafting Challenge - Put the PCs in a situation where they need to craft something in order to accomplish their goal.  Maybe they need to make something in order to fix a mechanism?  Or in order to satisfy some local gift-giving custom?  Or they need a forgery?  Maybe as part of an exchange for something else they need?
  • Lost and Found - Have your PCs discover someone or something that is clearly lost.  Maybe they find an infant in the wilderness.  Or a key with a strange inscription, or some kind of talisman.  Throw in a clue or two to present your players with a tantalizing mystery.  
  • Inhospitable Wilderness - Have the PCs go somewhere it’s an effort just to survive.  A barren desert, a treacherous swamp with poison gasses, a forest so dense the ground never sees the sun, or even the bottom of the ocean.  Test their endurance and survival skills!
  • Dinner Party - Have the PCs be summoned to a formal event!  Test them on the battlegrounds of social grace and etiquette!  Even better if it’s in a dangerous environment or an alien culture.
  • Thief - Have something important stolen from the PCs.  See how they handle it.
  • Needle in a Haystack - Give the PCs something very difficult to find.  Like a single specific housecat in a sprawling metropolis, or a legendary weapon of which there are many fakes/copies.  

Really, if you need any more inspiration, look at your player’s character sheets and see if they’ve invested any points in a skill they haven’t gotten to use much.  Then invent a challenge they could feasibly use that skill for.  If you can’t think of a situation that could be helped by an Appraise, Craft: Calligraphy or Handle Animal check, you need to practice your own creative problem solving skills!
