I think it’s important to remember that Dirk Gently has been through some shit; he’s not gonna be entirely made of sunshine and rainbows.
But then he finds out that he’s gonna find Todd, he’s gonna have a best friend who sticks with him, and he decides to make himself seem as nice and un-broken as possible so that Todd will like him.
He realises that Todd is broken too and thinks that what Todd needs is happiness so he tries so hard to be happy for himself and for Todd, and if that makes him seem over the top, so be it. He’s willing to do anything for his new best friend.
And then Farah is struggling to so he ups the happiness around her and soon he’s always trying to be happy for everyone and it makes him seem overly excited about everything but he’s okay with that if he can keep his friends from going through the same shit that he did.
When he gets rejected, gets called a monster by Todd, and he realises that he has failed his friends and himself, everything breaks a little more, and Dirk doesn’t know if he can fix it again.
