I am fighting for intellectual freedom and the right to read! As my shirt proudly declares, I like to read. My various medals reading, “I love my library,” “Book Liberator,” and “Bibliophile for life,” clearly state who I am and what I want. I am a bibliophile with a mission who wants a world in which censorship is a long forgotten practice, people are encouraged to be intellectually curious, and education is valued, but easy to find. My socks list the names of my fallen comrades, the titles I am fighting to liberate from censorship. Frequently censored characters, like Holden Caulfield, Harry Potter, Ponyboy, Charlie, Huckleberry Finn, and countless others are the voices that filled my head with values messages and helped shape me be the person I am. The things we read- be it mystery or romance or adventure- shape our lives and impart valuable wisdoms. Be intellectually curious. Have a love for reading. Embrace the freedom and responsibility of words. Announce to the world, “I love to read and I love to learn, but most importantly I love to think!”
For anyone interested in joining the fight, The Library of Congress and the Malala Fund are two really great organizations to look into.
