Voltron Helmet Tutorial

So I got asked how I made my helmet, so I decided to make an actual separate tutorial instead of just a few progress shots!

Materials:

  • EVA Foam
  • Packing or Painter’s Tape
  • Tin Foil
  • Cardstock (optional)

Okay, so first, I took a huge sheet of tinfoil and covered my head, leaving my face out:

then I covered the foil with tape, again leaving my face clear:

I then drew the basic pattern shapes onto the tape:

(again for clarity)

After, I CAREFULLY slipped it off, and cut along the lines. I cut a slit near the top of the side piece so I would know where to dart it on the foam:

I traced these onto cardstock to smooth and even the cuts I made:

I used these the trace onto my EVA, and cut those out. I made sure to cut the edges that meet along a diagonal after I cut the pieces out so that it would bend without showing the seam:

after that I just used hot glue to attach everything together, added superglue along the seams, sanded once dry, and cut the detail piece out of thin craft foam from the pattern i already made:

Paint it to your liking, et voilà!!

I started working on the Abyss Watcher hat!  This shape is so difficult to make lol.  It took three tries using thin cardboard to get this far, and I still can’t say I’m completely satisfied.  Like most Dark Souls characters, the Abyss Watchers have tiny heads, so I had to alter the proportions a bit to make it look good on my head.

I used a new technique to make this (possibly final) version - black worbla on top of card stock.  The reason for using card stock is that, because the original patterns were thin cardboard, I didn’t want the thickness of the eva foam to distort the shape and make it fatter.  I also want the brim to be very thin.  It’s a cool technique.  If you heat the worbla up enough, it actually sticks to the cardboard (better than eva foam), so you only need a single layer and don’t need to fold it onto the back.  Maybe I’ll make a tutorial later if there’s interest.

Once I’m satisfied with the shape of the hat and figure out how to get this to stay on my head, I’ll round out the cone using some sort of light weight filler.

the-last-alicorn  asked:

What are your favorite Ultraman, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider and Metal Hero hero suit designs?

There is a tire for my all time favorite Ultra Hero costume design.

I love Ultraseven:

But the design for Ultraman Ginga is a really, really nice one and I love the luminous blue areas.  It really fits his origin as the Ultraman from *spoiler*.

As far as Super Sentai designs.  I really, really love the design of the Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan costumes, especially the helmets.

They are just nice, simple, not too tight and I adore the sun patch on their chest.

As for Kamen Rider, that’s a hard one.  I like a LOT of the Kamen Rider designs for many different reasons but if I had to pick just one, I would go with Kamen Rider Super-1.

He may be a rather odd choice but I really love his helmet design, particularly the eyes and their unique shape.  No other Rider from his era had eyes like that and his predominantly silver, black and red color scheme is really cool and suits a Rider made for space exploration well.

Now, when it comes to Metal Heroes, I am a bit torn but I think the winner has to go to…. Mad Gallant!

This might be a bit of cheating considering he’s one of the chief antagonists from Special Megabeast Investigator Juspion rather than the hero of the show but I adore his design!

He is a evil, twisted version of  a Metal Hero clad all in black with those glowing yellow eyes and dome-like helmet.  He has just a touch of the design for the Kikaider villain Hakaider in him and that rocks in my book.  I love me some Hakaider!
