Oy, yeah. You reminded me of Cordy and Spike. Yep, those were terrible. I was squicked out about Cordy and Angel and Connor. God that was awful. And Spike. Omg. I could never ship Spuffy because to me that was just a violent, toxic relationship. I liked Buffy/Angel but going with what would have been best for Buffy I'd actually have picked Riley before they ruined him. I know JW said he's a Cap fan, but I really didn't see it. He may have been a fan but I don't think he did Steve a service.
No, he really didn’t. And the weird thing is he’s a comic fan so if he’d actually read Steve’s comics he should know better? Granted Steve has had over 50 writers for just his solo books and each author has had a different take on Steve, of course, but Whedon’s take was particularly horrible. Fun fact, even Kirby and Simon’s 1940′s Steve was a little shit who pulled pranks on his superiors in the Army, no joke. Also, Steve LOVES technology. Like loves it. It was one of the things that made his adjustment to coming off the ice tolerable for him, he actually marveled at all the cool stuff in the future. “I think it runs on some kind of electricity”… whatever Whedon. Moreover, Steve is the first one to make an old man joke. Like, he loves them. And he loves, loves, loves messing with peoples perceptions of him as a man out of time. He legit trolls people with that crap. He is totally able to take the piss in that regard.
Ye-eah, Whedon can bite me with his characterization of Steve. Honestly!
As for Buffy… I could never get into Riley, probably because Buffy wasn’t really into Riley. True he might have been the best choice for her safety-wise, but then he also couldn’t take the heat of her lifestyle, which is ultimately what separated them. He felt inadequate next to her. So I think having support for her position as Slayer and having someone she could count on to have her back and match her strength is just as important. Poor thing, her love life really was a mess and yes, that was all on Whedon.
