1962 Parker Residence, Coral Gables, FL (existing)

Alfred Browning Parker (1916-2011) was a Modernist architect best-known for post World War II residential architecture — first for the wealthy and later for the ecologically minded. Known as the “Playboy Architect of Miami” for his dashing good looks and high-society lifestyle, Parker gained fame for outstanding modern houses around Miami, Florida.

His own “Parker Residence” exemplifies the manner in which he harmonized a structure with Florida’s natural setting. His focus was not on creating “grand” homes but rather proportionally sized built environments appropriate to the setting, utilizing locally sourced materials and early explorations of environmentally efficient use of cross currents and shade.

The Big Cheese of Miami, 8080 SW 67th Ave, Coral Gables, FL

For my birthday I had to have pizza of course. I’ve heard great things from family about Big Cheese. I rolled in deep with my Cuban posse like a Ricky Ricardo wrecking crew. I saw that you can order custom slices which was cool cause they had a plethora of toppings. I decided on a buffalo chicken slice of course.

The slice came out piping hot, stacked with chicken. There was a slight blue cheese drizzle. The crust was probably one of the thinnest I have ever seen. HOWEVER, it did not crumble under the pressure of these heavy toppings, no IT STOOD STRONG!! Could this be? Could this be the prize jewel in a sea of shitty slices that is Miami pizza?! Well it was damn close. It was all going well until the end when the almighty Pizza Gods smited my arrogance with a rogue nerve in the chicken. It nearly killed my appetite. I’m sure this isn’t a common occurance judging by how packed the parlor was (there was a wait time). Just my luck on my birthday I was bestowed this faulty piece of poultry.

Okay, guys, here it is! The Dregs shall hereafter be known as (insert trumpets, crashing cymbal noises, someone screams in the distance)

SIX OF CROWS

So why the title change? There were concerns that the word “dregs” was unfamiliar to a lot of readers, but it also came down to the fact that while some of the members of Kaz’s crew are also members of the gang known as the Dregs (one of the worst in the Barrel natch), some aren’t, and this book is about Kaz and his crew more than it’s about the gang.

Why Six of Crows? Well, crows are allll over this book and they’re important to Kaz in particular. More to be revealed in 2015 and you can come on out and ask me all about it on my tour!

We’re going to have an amazing Six of Crows related gift with purchase at all of these stops (while supplies last blee blah bloo) and I’ll be reading from the new book at most of them. (Not at Yallfest because honestly that would be weird. But you should still come to Yallfest because YALLFEST.)

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing a little bit more about Kaz, Inej, Wylan, Jesper, Nina, and Matthias this week. I can’t wait to share more about them and this story in the new year. And I can’t wait to see some of you on the road in just a few weeks! Come stare directly into my eyes and tell me of your customs.
