the kind of storytelling that car boys is, the culmination of improvised comedy and storytelling, the game behaving in ways nobody expects, fan interpretations of the games behavior, and coming back around to nick and griffin including fans thoughts when coming up with new sitatuions and jokes to form the story, is amazing. it’s almost like reading cave paintings because the audience is taking something they see but don’t fully understand and making a story out of something someone else created. and nick and griffin have a lot element of control but not all of it. unlike the creators of cave paintings.

car boys is a story with 3 distinct authors: nick and griffin, the BeamNG.drive itself, and the audience. we wouldn’t have anything without nick and griffin venturing into the game, it would always be just nick and griffin dicking around with cars if the game didn’t glitch in such interesting and wild ways, and the glitches would just be funny and (if a little weird) if the audience didn’t interpret them as being extremely powerful and their own entity.

the shows ending is BUCKWILD but it’s believable because we know the game is also a capable author. nick and griffin were windows into the show for the audince and it’s believable that they got phsyically sucked into it and trapped there forever, because we’ve accepted the game does what it wants, outside of nick’s control.

and this can say a lot about our understaning of the internet and how we engage with it. but, again, none of it was planned and it would just be fan interpretation providing that deeper meaning. and, fans reading too much into the show is what made the finale that huge moment it turned out to be.

what a miracle of a show. i can’t wait to see more stuff like it, since i can’t think of anything that uses a similar kind of storytelling right now.

Magic > common sense

Context: We had just been on an adventure in our pirate ship, collecting these cursed items, mostly armour and some weapons, that allow the wielder control over an element. We are then faced with a gauntlet of elemental challenges to navigate our ship through things like storm, rocky reef, icebergs ect. once we cleared that we found ourselves at the foot of a 300 ft cliff with a ship sized hole at the top

Cleric: Well we are stuck

Fighter: We could climb it maybe? Do we have enough rope?

Bard (me): Wait a minute *cleric’s name* you can use your shield to control earth right?

Cleric: Yeah?

Me: I have an idea, you can make a big, ship shaped ramp up to that opening right?

Cleric: Oh! Yeah! I can. *To DM* I do that

Other fighter: I see where this is going *To DM* I am going to use my artifact to make an ice sled for the ship

Me: *To DM*I am going to use my artifact to make a small tornado rocket booster out the back of the ship

Wizard: *To DM* I summon a big wave to push us up the ramp

So our insane plan works and we make a sick jump off the ramp with our ship into this cave

DM: Well that was interesting. You know I was actually just planning for you to lower the cliff down to the water level. You guys do realize you could have done that instead right?

The Major - Jasper Hale x Reader

Requested by anonymous: jasper x reader and the reader is shy but confident and can be funny at the wrong time. Since she’s dating jasper, she hasn’t met the major yet, so when she does she teases him, but good natured, yet everyone is worried that the major will overreact. The volturi find out about her and her powers *controls the elements* she accidentally makes fun of how Aro giggles, the major comes out but everything turns out okay. I just need protective and fluffy major so much right now

I’m sorry this took so long! I lost all inspiration to write for a while and I didn’t want to just write like complete garbage lol. Also, I changed it up a bit, but protective Jasper is still there. I hope you like it!

Suddenly, Alice gasped and the book she was reading fell to the floor.

“What is it Alice?” Bella looked at her with concern and reached to touch her arm.

Alice’s eyes were completely zoned out and she looked faint. You felt nervous not knowing what she was seeing. A few moments later her eyes cleared up and her brows knit together in focus. “They’re coming for her.”

Your stomach flipped and fear burned through your veins. “W-what? Me? And who?”

Jasper moved quickly over to you and held you. “Why? What do they want?” You had never heard him sound so scared.

“I saw them testing her abilities…they must know she’s special…” She trailed off and looked at you.

“Who?!” You shouted.

“The Volturi.” She blinked, still a bit out of it.

You remembered Jasper once telling you about the Italian coven, but you had never met them in person.

“Well what do we do? When will they be here?” Esme stepped forward.

“Soon…I’m—I’m not sure exactly, but soon.”

All of a sudden, Emmett came through the doorway looking angry. “The Volturi are coming. I saw them in the clearing while I was out hunting. Why the hell are they here?!” He raised his voice.

“They want to meet (Y/N).” Esme looked over at him. She moved in front of you and held your hands, looking into your eyes. “We’ll keep you safe, I promise.”

You nod and look over your shoulder at Jasper. You couldn’t quite read his face but you knew he was thinking of how to protect you.

“That’s how I burned down part of Hydra’s base.”, (Y/N) spoken softly. Tears that she didn’t know was hiding were now rolling down. Nobody said anything. They were shocked by what the girl went though at the age of seven.

“They were trying to program me. Their intentions were to create fighters better than the Winter Soldier and Black Widow.”

“If they can control them we are have a big problem.”, Tony stated as he tried to emphasize how serious the problem was.

“How many are they?”

“I don’t know”, the last events weren’t leaving her mind, “Probably 8 or less. I don’t know how many survived.”

“As far as we know the base is still whole. You may have burnt down part of it.”, Steve declared as he stood up and began walking.

“What did you feel?”, Bruce asked all of a sudden.

“What do you mean?”

“What did you feel right before you burnt the base?”

“Oh. I- um…fire. Yeah, definitely fire, but not literally. I mean, it was -“

“Relieving? Taking you whole, feeling powerful because of the rage built inside you and yet it somehow calms you down?”, Banner finished her sentence.

“Exactly.”, (Y/N) was amazed by this. Mr. Banner wasn’t lying her when he had said he cannot control his anger that easily.

“What about when we found you?”, Wanda questioned as she understood what Bruce was attempting to o.

“Scared. Naked. Exposed. Breakable.”

“Mixed feeling, paranoia overwhelming you?”

“Yes.”, after some seconds Banner revealed his thoughts making them a statement.

“I think I know what your powers are.”

Ten minutes later the whole gang was in the training room waiting to see what the young witch was capable of.

“Are you sure Mr. Banner?”

“Call me Bruce, please.”, her gave the girl a smile and nodded, “Yes, I am.”

“But how can I control the elements? I mean, how did you find this out?”

“Fire is symbolized by rage, anger. It the Greek Mythology Ares, the furious god of war, is always drawn with red paint and flames around him. Also, when you said a great amount of different feeling overwhelmed you, it showed me that you can control earth. When we found you, your first action was to use those spikes to warn or kill the people trying to disturb you. Earth is believed to give humans stability. So basically your powers had tried to calm your mind down by using the ground as a weapon. But when Peter entered you shelter you were again taken by your fears making unstable and unpredictable like the wind.”

“So my emotional condition affects my powers?”

“That’s right. So now we would try to teach you how to use them without letting the emotions taking you over.”, Steve patted the girl on her shoulder.

“What if I hurt you?”

“Do not worry about us.”, Tony smiled in order to reassure her.

Ten minutes later all the Avengers were in a shield created by Wanda with her powers in the second floor of the training room. It wasn’t a whole floor just a part of it from where the instructor could watch or could enter the premises.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the great Avengerrrrs.”, (Y/N) ‘announced’ with a sarcastic tone in her formal voice, “Good to know old men and women are scared of a puny girl.”, Wanda who was standing against the girl laughed as she saw her friends trying to protect themselves in the shield she had created.

“Hey, don’t blame us that we value our lives and want to keep them as longer as possible.”, Tony acted as a drama queen placing his hand over  the place where his heart was supposed to be.

“Guys, you must accept it. She is right.”

“Why don’t you shut up and show the girl whatever you are going to show her.”

“As you wish Mr. Stank.”, Wanda retorted back and turned around to face (Y/N). The girl was nervous as she was able to see. Her hands were slightly shaking and she kept rubbing them against her clothes in order to remove the sweat, “So, I am going to attack you. Don’t worry i won’t hurt you. You just have to try to protect yourself somehow by using your energy. Just before that do not panic about the situation, that’s the most important thing you have to do. Breathe and then try to look deep inside you, searching for the power you want. Think about it, think how you want it to look, what and how you are going to do with it.”, the girl nodded but she felt nothing from this instructions was going to be fulfilled.

Wanda’s fingers were moving and seconds later they were shining in red but the woman wasn’t attacking her yet. (Y/N) did her best to follow the advice. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment. She had four powers and only one was able to protect her right now– air. The girl remembered the feeling when she had attacked Peter. The air was tickling the tips if her fingers. She looked for that feeling again but nothing happened. No strange feeling inside her, no power felt. She opened her eyes just in time to see Wanda’s magic coming towards her. She kneeled down to avoid it.

“Don’t give up. It won’t happen from the first time.”, Steve said.

The girl inhaled and exhaled deeply this time trying with another power. There wasn’t ground or water her so she had to use fire. This time was the same failure.

“Nothing is happening.”, the girl stated after her seventh attempt, “I feel nothing inside me, only darkness. Guess why? Because my fucking eyes are fucking closed!”

“Language!”, Steve called from inside the shield.

“Sorry.”, the girl gave the man an innocent smile but deep inside her she was feeling the same way as she had felt in the Hydra base – as a failure, miserable failure that cannot do anything. What was she doing here? Why did she even trust those guys? Why the hell was she thinking the brown haired teenager is attractive? A lot of questions suddenly filled her mind making her feel odd, questioning all her actions since she exploded part of the base. What is she even?

“Earth to (Y/N)! Are you listening?”, Peter’s voice took her out of the trans she had been immersed in.

“Yes…no, sorry! It’s just… I’m sucking. I can’t protect myself by creating a stupid shield from air or fire. I don’t know how to use my powers and how to control them! It’s driving me crazy when I am failing at things. Especially this!”, the girl shouted as soon as despair filled her body. She wasn’t going to give up, no. She was going to fight with teeth until she reached the final but all those events that happened in the last three days…it was too heavy for her to bear.

“(Y/n), hey, you can do it. I know you can. You’ve gone through a lot and this…this stupid thing cannot stop you. You are brave, you are-”, Peter had approached the red shield separating the two teenagers that were slowly falling under the love curse of each other. His voice was soft, his intentions good and it was felt. But the girl was too gentle. Not like a flower that would break under a slightly rougher touch, but like a bomb that was going to explode if the person holding her didn’t know how to defuse it. Peter was from those who were about to get killed because of the wrong actions he made.

“You don’t know me to tell me what I am! I do not know what I am!”, she screamed at the boy. Her body was moving on its own. For a moment (Y/N) felt as a prisoner. She was seeing what she was doing but she couldn’t control herself. The girl felt it, the power that was running through her veins, that was slowly taking control of her hands, mind, thoughts…Her hands were on fire. She moved them towards the shield sending a fire orb. At first the shield swallowed it but then it began swelling and the fire finally was in charge. The shield was now like a cell keeping its victims. The small prison was causing troubles with their ability to inhale. Wanda did something and the small hell torture was gone. The girl was standing there, her feet glued to the ground not letting her move. She was like a living stone – looking unbreakable and hard but this event causing her to crack from inside. When she saw the avengers’ looks she finally felt what she was trying to hide. She was a dangerous weapon, the desired weapon from Hydra that could kill thousands of people without caring at first place. She felt guilt, but more important – part of her felt good.

“I told you we would need a shield.”, Tony stated as he and the rest of the group gave it a try to stand up. Most of them were shocked about what had happened. Of course, not about themselves but the girl. She was shocked – looking at a spot on the wall between the heads of her victims, not moving, pale as snow. Her bottom lip was shaking as her hands did.

“I-I…I am -”, they all knew she was going to apologize but it was hard for her to find the right words.

“Hey, kid, we are used to having our asses kicked. You haven’t hurt anyone, no need to worry.”, Steve rushed towards (Y/N) in order to calm the girl down. He knew what Hydra was capable of and what the girl had gone through was infernal. It would have been unnatural if she was stable.

“But I could have.”, Steve saw the tears forming in her (y/e/c) eyes. Seeing this little girl beside him made his heart shrink. How could he not see the broken, the innocent, the lost girl? He only thought of her as a way Hydra to entice them…He was supposed to be a superhero, to have faith in everything, to see the good in every bad. The blonde man had no idea what to say as though a cat had gotten his tongue. He opened his mouth to say something, to help this little girl who had lost everything in her life but he closed it seconds later.

Wanda came closer as she knew (Y/N) trusted her more than the others. Peter followed her actions but as soon as they were next to the girl she ran away.

“(Y/N)!”, Peter called after the girl and was about to run after her but Steve grabbed him, “She needs help!”, he demanded and tried to  escape the strong grip with no luck.

“She needs to be alone with herself right now, Pete. I think we might have damaged her more rather than helping.”

The next week (Y/N) was distant. She talked only with Wanda and Bruce and trained only with them. The others tried to make her feel as at home she never had but the girl was barely giving in. She was stubborn, that was for sure, but with nights spent at her room with Wanda she understood how wrong her actions are.

“You are not doing anything bad, but how they are trying to help and you should not be scared that you will hurt them. I know how you feel. When I began my training here I wasn’t as good as now, I almost crashed the training room down.”, the woman laughed at the thought that just appeared in her head, “I remember Tony’s face when he came down and saw one of the walls missing.”

“Really?”. The girl laughed along with her new best friend.

“Yes. He made me practice outside even after he repaired it.”, Wanda looked at (Y/N) feeling her as the little sister she never had, “See, no matter what happens they are going to be your family only if you let them. They are strange I can assume, we had out times of division but we came back together.”

It was 8.00 pm. (Y/N) was lying on her bed thinking about Wanda’s words as she tent to do the last three days. The girl felt Wanda as a sister she could trust. She believed her and knew that all the things she had told her were true. Strangely this people were trying to give her a home, to give her a family and she was backing. Why? Was it because it was happening too fast? Maybe because it felt so unreal that it was more possible to be Hydra test than a part of the reality? Only in her first day here she told them her whole story, she was given a private room, they tried to help her with her powers. And what did she do? She almost killed them and ran away crying like a baby…Yeah, a really good first impression. The girl had to accept the information that Hydra was away, not torturing her, not going after her or if they did, she was safe here with people to protect her and teach her how to do the same.

For a week she slightly improved her powers. Well, she still wasn’t able to control them but for now she didn’t need to be so angry to use any of her powers. The girl was trying to use the built in her rage to call her powers instead of letting the anger take control over her. (Y/N) was happy with the results for only one week and this success was one of the things encouraging her to go to the living room where the Avengers were meeting every night to eat and relax somehow.

(Y/N) stood up and looked in the mirror. She was wearing pink pajamas with unicorns on them which was definitely not her style. But what could she do? Wanda was too happy to call somebody a sister… The witch opened the wardrobe. The first time she did so she was amazed how big it was and most importantly that it was full of clothes fitting her perfectly. Now, she was kind of used to it but not at all. The girl took out comfortable jeans and a pale blue t-shirt. After dressing up she exited the room. Taking a deep breath she guided her legs towards the living room which was on the floor below. As she reached the glass door she looked inside. They were all scattered around the room – some on the sofas, some on the armchairs, and some on the floor. (Y/N) inhaled and exhaled deeply and then opened the door. The Avengers didn’t hear it because they were immersed in their conversation but e certain one did with his super senses.

The boy turned around and as the two lovebirds, as Tony liked to call them, saw each other they both stopped doing whatever they were for a moment. (Y/N) looked directly at Peter and for a moment it was only the two of them. The girl hated this feeling but as she had no powers in her emotions, neither on her hearth.

“(Y/N)!”, Wanda exclaimed and ran towards her to give her a hug. The Avengers looked at the girl surprised.

“Ms. (Y/N)!”, Thor came and ruffled her hair, “I am so happy to see you there.”, by his voice, the girl understood he had drank something but his relaxed behavior around her, the fact he was himself made her smile.

“Hello everyone!”, she greeted the gang and sat down next to Wanda and opposite Peter who was now giving her e reassuring smile. She smiled back, “Can I have a slice?”, she asked as the witch pointed at the three pizzas in front of her.

“Of course!”, Tony answered as he poured another glass of alcohol, “But hurry up because Thor is going to eat them all.”

(Y/N) laughed and joined the Avengers that night. At first she thought she wouldn’t fit there but she couldn’t have been more wrong. This was the first time from ages she felt happy again, she felt loved and welcomed. She wasn’t scared anymore, neither in pain. She was feeling young, carefree, free as a teenager should feel. The witch felt normal and for once in her whole life, she forgot about the nightmares that chased her each night.

BS Bending in TLOK

Watching The Legend of Korra is so disappointing in a lot of different ways. So if you ignore the plot, you’d expect at least some good action scenes with the effort and consistency from the old show. Ehhhh. The bending in LOK is strikingly idiotic and a degradation of the gem from the old show. Maybe if I weren’t comparing it to The Last Airbender, I wouldn’t mind it. But the fact it is so blatantly off from its predecessor makes for another highlight of Korra that I can’t un-see. From how elements are manipulated to even more complex shit with specific kinds of ~special people bending~, Korra, if I can put this politely, fucks everything up.

Right from the start you can tell that Korra definitely dumbed down the movements of the characters. It’s odd because the martial arts expert from Avatar worked on Korra as well. However, he only worked on 22 episodes of Korra, compare that with his 61 episodes guided in The Last Airbender. It’s probably a mix of Kisu’s lack of involvement, and an overall decision from the writers that maybe it wasn’t as important? Which is sad, because it really disassociates the audience from the complex spirituality and intricacies of the world. Styles benders seem to have spent years mastering are lost, and replaced with a modern, boxing type “PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH!!!” Hollywood action situation. Here’s some pretty (MS PAINT) pictures to do the talking for me.

And a bonus:

If the simplification of normal bending hasn’t gotten to you, there’s still a lot more I have to sift through. There’s so much shit pointing to how bending’s complexity was reduced for coooool moments. I’m even going to make nice little subheaders.

Lavabending

So, in ATLA we see lavabending is a feat only the Avatars are capable of. Roku does it, Kyoshi does it. Avatar cool kids only. But then in Book Three, Bolin suddenly has the ability to lavabend at the tip of the hat. Which, by the way, is another thing stupidly prevalent throughout this series. Both Korra and Bolin in times of crisis suddenly have the ability to do things they couldn’t do, but really wished they could’ve. Hooow convenient.

So the discrepancy here is how Bolin can lavabend, and so can this random Earthbender guy, wouldn’t that mean all Earthbenders can? Metalbending makes sense, but lava is so hot it’s going to set stuff on fire. Technically, it counts as two elements, and has been confirmed as such by making it an Avatar-only thing in ATLA. But now these two random guys can just do this. Apparently it may even be easier than metalbending, which is also ridiculous. If lavabending is just bending the Earth to “go fast”, that’s a lot easier than metalbending because there’s more mass to bend. Just make it go zoom zoom and blamo everyone’s a lavabender.

Some people like to claim that because Bolin had an Earthbending dad and a Firebender mom, then that means he can control both elements to control lava. Which is dumb because then that would make him a fanfic-esque Dual Bender. And we really don’t need any of those. It’s never explained or justified, and is so different from the original show, it feels…sacrilegious. How dare you dishonor the lore. /s

BALD AIRBENDING MAN

What’s his name?

I don’t really care, because he’s dumb too. I feel like I don’t have to elaborate, though. It should be pretty obvious. ~Harmonic Converge~ (weird af plot device) gave him airbending, and because he studied it before and read a book by an Airbender Lady, he’s a master at it now. His powers are so innate, he worked so little to get to where he is. Hell, he didn’t work at all.

Unless you want me to believe that all his days in prison, he anticipated becoming an airbender and practiced all the moves beforehand. Granted, there are no official moves anymore. I’m sure he’s experienced in reckless punching. That’s all you need to bend, right?

If he can read a book and be great at airbending, why can’t Korra. Why didn’t Aang read THREE books to go defeat Ozai. Aang just should’ve read Earthbending for Dummies. Then he could bend the entire world off its axis. And This Bald Guy can jump off a cliff after quoting some “deep airbending lore” and he can FLY. Not even propelled by anything or even (AGAIN I REITERATE) moving his arms to BEND the currents around him. He’s not flying. He’s floating. And floating characters have always seemed like pretty bad animation, seriously. He looks like a late-stage yuri on ice character. Super out of place, and moving oddly across an undefined plane.

MAKO IN GENERAL

Mako does a couple things I’m not a big fan of. Ok, a lot of things. But in terms of bending, I have a few choice picks.

In Legend of Korra, lightning and its redirection has a lot less of an impact. Being electrocuted no longer hurts anyone unless the writers want us to feel bad for a character being hurt (usually Korra). But half of the time, it’s just there to look really COOL and not really do anything. This is proven by two things. Mako shoots lightning right on Amon at point blank, and Amon isn’t affected. The same is true for Mako. He HOLDS ON to the lightning and ISN’T AFFECTED AT ALL. Let me make another ATLA/LOK comparison.

Zuko: Tries to redirect lightning, gaurding his torso so hopefully it doesn’t hit him. In the end it does and he’s pretty much out of the fight.

Mako: Doesn’t even really care if he’s hit by the lightning at all. He holds on to it for a good few seconds, because it’s not like electrocution hurts or anything. Only after getting a REFRESHING SHOCK for a good bit does he decide to toss it back at the Robo Man.

Maybe this would make sense because Mako is supposed to be a cool, all-powerful Firebender. But then even that theory breaks down, because he can withstand the strongest forms of raw fuckin’ Bending Power from all elements, apparently.

He does another of these dumb moves when he’s being bloodbended by Amon. We see Amon being bloodbended, but he escapes the grip, and the audience assumes it’s because he’s a bloodbender. But then suddenly MAKO CAN DO IT TOO. What a great guy.

Also Amon’s fine from this shock as well. And this kind of encompasses everything I’ve touched on. There’s Amon bending without moving, Mako having unrealistic powers never touched on before, and powers that are nerfed to all hell just to add ~drama~ in replace of actual sense.

TL;DR: LOK’s bending is saturated action filler written in for wish fulfillment, sacrifices old techniques and inner consistency for cool looking moves and scenarios, and shows a disappointing lack of passion or misunderstanding of the source material

Open letter to Disney.

You really don’t have to shy away from the archetypical Disney Princess. Really, this new trend of making every new princess a Strong Independent Woman going on a sparkly pink plastic adventure and picking up a sword for a few seconds while shunning the “princess” label is getting old, fast.

There’s absolutely no reason to dump on the original princesses. Especially when you base it on sweeping stereotypes that don’t even apply to the characters you’re trying to mock (Snow White was never canonically married, Aurora knew Philip for about as long as Anna knew Kristoff, Cinderella was literally an abuse victim looking to escape, Ariel was interested in human culture long before she even met Eric, Jasmine didn’t even want to be married until she met a man she actually loved for who he was, Belle spent who knows how long with Adam before the two warmed up to each other, the list goes on).

You’re not suddenly being more relatable to girls just because this new breed of princess has no love interest and wacky hair physics flying in her face all the time. And how is giving the new princesses superpowers supposed to make her more relatable to the average girl (nothing wrong with superpowers but…how many girls have to deal with control of the elements as one of their many life problems)?

Honestly just give me a traditionally feminine princess who loves to wear dresses and sing to animals and doesn’t take crap from people who want to mock her for it. When someone says she’s a princess, she gladly accepts that title and reminds them it’s one that implies power and prestige and authority. She doesn’t need a sword or superpowers to be strong, she can be an unstoppable force of nature in her own right.

some fae facts from lore (pt 2)

pt 1 here

  • iron, salt, and bread (any kind) will ward fae away. so will rowan and hazel.
  • rowan and iron will ward most bad things away, actually.

  • ringing church bells at dawn and dusk will drive fae and/or changelings from your village.

  • alternately, cream and butter and cakes (not bread!!) will attract them.

  • they have many names. fair folk, the good people, the gentry, the wee folk. my favorite is the good neighbors

  • there are places where the veil between worlds is thinner, and these places see more fae. ireland is said to be one. transient places (crossroads and bus stops etc.) are said to be another.

  • musicians are often taken to their world. they may come back but they won’t be the same.

  • adder stones (also called hag stones, witch stones, snake eggs, adderstanes) can reveal fairy or witch traps if seen through the hole in the stone. you can’t trick an adder stone.

  • the fae are highly sexed. orgies are common.

  • random body pains were attributed to the fae. this was called elf shot.

  • tangled hair in the morning was also considered their fault. this was called elf locks.

  • consumption (tuberculosis) was attributed to the fae as well, for forcing young men and women to dance all night.

  • basically if you were sick and there was no cure, blame the fae.

  • alchemists sometimes called on certain fae to assist them. no word on how well this worked out for them.

  • millers were thought to be ‘no canny,’ which means in league with the fae, owing to their ability to control elements. (fire in the kiln, water for the burn, wind for the mill, general control of machinery.)

  • if you know a fae’s true name, you can summon them at any time to do your bidding. but this is a double edged  sword. if they learn your true name, they enslave you right back, and the things they do would be far worse than anything you could think of.

  • some myths have lesser fae paying a tithe (a tiende) to their royals. some myths have them paying this tithe directly to hell.

  • mortal midwives were sometimes summoned to the fae realm to assist in the birth of another kidnapped mortal woman. they sometimes offer an ointment for use on the baby. if the midwife uses it herself, she will gain fae sight.

  • lesser fae can die or be killed. to witness one of these funerals is bad omen.

That bloodbending Lance post made me think- Lance taking blood out of his wounds and using it as a weapon like Freezer alchemist or Mirai from kyoukai no kanata. Better yet Lance forcing blood out of his fallen enemies and using to take out his other enemies. An actual sword from actual blood of his enemies, if you will. He did it once when he was super duper pissed and that team had new found respect and fear of him

Yo, okay adding onto this.
I saw this thing with a waterbender lance who had a bow and arrow made out of water. Imagine him making a whole fucking arsenal out of blood! Darts, bows and arrows, throwing knives, straight up torpedoes! It scares the shit outta everyone else because Lance is their deadliest asset.
In addition to all of this, Lance also has the capability to control the other elements to an extent except for Keith’s element, fire. Water is in everything, and so Lance can control the water in plants, the water in mud, the water in air and clouds! He can pull water out of thin air! How amazing is that?!
I’m sorry I love this idea.

Langst Mini Fic #3 (Part 1)

Idea: Emotional Imbalance

“Pardon me but I have a question about your Blue Paladin…was he…a victim of torture?”

Allura and Shiro both stopped their movements when they heard the question. They both stiffened from where they were sitting when the question finally registered in their minds. Why would he ask something like that?

They landed on a planet that the Paladins dubbed as the alien version of “Avatar”. Hunk briefly explained to Allura that back in their home there was this show that centers about people that could control elements like water, earth, fire and air. This was their reasons why they gave such name for the latest planet they were trying to talk to an alliance. The people of this planet embodies the elements found in their homeland. Some were made of the four basic elements of Earth while others were new for the Paladins. Just like now, Allura and Shiro were talking to General Neal and his body was formed in a stalagmite structure but with a lava coloring.

“May I ask why you think so, General?” ever the diplomatic, Allura stole a glance to Shiro before shifting her attention back to the General.

“I’m sorry, I know my question is quite offensive but we do need to consider the mentality of your soldiers. We have previous experience about unattended situation concerning mental health.”

Shiro’s eyes became guarded when this was said. They never truly tackled the topic of mental and emotional health when they became Paladins. Heck, even him that was considered the Voltron leader always try his best to forget his obvious PTSD (something that was very difficult to do in the first place).

“I assure you General Neal that our Blue Paladin is in perfect health, mentally and physically speaking.” Shiro intervened for Allura’s sake. Though deep down he knew that there was something wrong with Lance. It was not glaringly obvious, it was more like a hunch in Shiro’s part and he has no concrete evidence for what he was feeling. For all of them, Lance seems to be happily content to where he was and whatever he was doing.

“Are you telling me that the Blue Paladin is always so cheerful? I haven’t even seen or heard him snapped on the little ones and trust me, even the kindest of us can get angry towards the unruly little ones.”

“Yes,” Allura smiled when she remembered how they, she supposed children, flocked around Lance and her Paladin gave them the attention they wanted from him, “he is always like that.”

“I hope you are not lying to me, Princess Allura. We have a case before where our people who had been victim of slavery forget that they can cry or even be angry.” General Neal stood up and walked towards the glass window where he could safely gaze down on the other Paladins. His eyes specifically landed on the subject of his question. There was something about the Blue Paladin that rubbed him the wrong way. Not the wrong way that the Paladin might be an enemy but more like a child who was trying to be brave even if in reality they were really scared. “I really hope you are not lying.” the General repeated again when he saw the little ones accidentally caught the Blue Paladin’s hair on fire.

-/-

Pidge knew that there was something wrong with Lance. But this knowledge was more like a gut feeling and Pidge’s logical mind could not accept such thing as ‘gut feeling’. They needed concrete evidence, quiznack they might even do the scientific process just to get a sliver of science on what was happening on Lance. No human could be so content to what they have especially if you were a human stuck in space.

Yes, Pidge knew that Lance was the type of person that needed physical effection. Something that Pidge could not really give without snapping or being high with emotions. Pidge knew that only Hunk and Coran (or even the mice) could satisfy even for a bit the physical cravings Lance sometimes needed. But as the team progress the busier each of them get and the more Lance was left by himself.

Lance could not even spar with Keith without making things awkward between them. Well, it was awkward for Keith while Lance was just plainly confused on why the Red Paladin was acting so uncomfortably whenever he was around. The reason might be what happened a week ago when Keith just exploded and the first person he lashed out to was Lance. Shiro tried to mediate but Keith was a ball of fire and Lance might be the only one to get him snapped out of it (based on the theory between water and fire, Pidge supplied in their mind). Lance just stared at them and when it became obvious that Keith has nothing more to say he beamed happily towards them and said:

“So that is where I am wrong! Do you mind showing me how it works?”

The rest of them was dumbfounded after Lance said it. The words was said with a blindingly happy smile that Pidge was tempted to put shades to protect their eyes.

Keith turned tomato red. Maybe it was because, for once, Lance kept a level head. Maybe it was because he just realized what he had done. Maybe it was because he knew he was in the wrong. Whatever it was, it made Keith to be even more awkward than before when it comes to Lance.

What are some hurdles a person who has practiced taekwondo, fencing and aikido might have to jump when thrown into a real life or death fight? What will happen when they get much better at escalating quickly (almost too quickly) and they're thrown into a situation where that's the opposite of what they need to do?

By, “the opposite of what they need to do,” you mean, not escalate the situation, or specifically work to try to limit the harm being inflicted. You know, like an Aikido practitioner?

I know we’ve said this before, but; martial arts are not interchangeable. They’re not just alternate move sets, or aesthetic considerations. Every martial art, every one, brings its own philosophies and outlooks into play. When those philosophies overlap, you might have options to start mixing them together, or lifting elements from one for the other. Aikido and Taekwondo don’t really have much of anything to talk about.

Aikido is a martial art of pacifism. It works well for self defense because the entire idea is, you stand at the center, plant your feet, and send anyone who attacks you to the floor, so they can think about all of the mistakes they just made.

As I said at the beginning, Aikido doesn’t escalate, at least not on its own. This is a martial art that focuses on ending conflicts with as little harm done as humanly possible. People will get hurt, that’s an inevitability, but, this is a martial art that is heavily focused on avoiding escalation.

If you want to start mixing it with something else, there are other martial arts that have common ground. Jujitsu and Judo both have some of the same philosophical underpinnings, they’re just pretty sure that plopping someone on the ground isn’t enough to get the message across, that sometimes you’re going to want to get down there and make your point in person.

There are even aggressive martial arts that you can (probably) mix Aikido with fairly effectively, including Muay Thai or Krav Maga. Martial arts that say, “I want to get really close to someone and turn them into goulash.” They do have common ground on the ranges that they think combat should be taking place at.

Taekwondo doesn’t. It’s a very active martial art. It wants to go places and kick people in the head. As a practical martial style it shares almost nothing with Aikido. Where Aikido wants its foes close enough to reach out and touch, Taekwondo is all about forcing your foes away, and keeping them off balance while you drive your foot through any internal organs they were using.

Taekwondo exists as a practical martial art, but you’re going to be hard pressed to find that variant outside of Korea. If your character served in the South Korean military, worked for the police or as a bodyguard there, then it’s possible they learned this.

Taekwondo traditionally pairs with Hapkido. I don’t know much about the martial art itself, beyond that it has a focus on joint locks. But, these are designed to work together, and against one another, so a practitioner in one would probably also learn the other.

Ironically, Taekwondo can also find common ground with martial arts like Muay Thai or Krav Maga. These are all martial arts that enjoy moving around a lot and messing people up. Where Taekwondo excels at doing this at range, Muay Thai or Krav Maga offer options to do this up close.

Now, if you’re sitting there and wondering why I just listed the same two martial arts as compatible to both of the ones you picked, that’s because they have common ground with one another, the two you picked, really kind of don’t. It’s not that martial artists never learn conflicting styles. That does happen. But the benefit you gain from that isn’t being able to blend them together into a single style, it’s being able to switch up your approach to fit the situation you’re in. And, yes, escalation control is an element of your martial art.

A character who’s been trained in Aikido and (practical) Taekwondo, would be in a very good position to work as a bodyguard. Taekwondo allows for rapid vicious responses when called for, and Aikido allows for them to deal with attackers in public situations where you really wouldn’t want a bodyguard tearing apart an overly eager fan.

I’m just going to toss this one out, but fencing really doesn’t add much to this situation. It will help with physical conditioning, but then again they’d already be getting that from Taekwondo and Aikido.

So, if your character’s been training in Aikido, either recreationally or practically, they shouldn’t be having issues with escalation. Remember, escalation is where you increase the amount of force you use to a point where combat ceases to be an appealing option for your opponent. The entire concept is anathema to Aikido, which seeks to end combat with as little violence as possible.

Also, there’s a side nitpick, it’s not really possible to escalate too quickly. The issue is escalating too far. Again, the idea is that you demonstrate a degree of violence your opponent isn’t psychologically ready to handle, forcing them to back down.

Escalating too slowly can give them time to come to terms with what you’re doing, but the only problem with escalating too quickly is that you’ll use excessive force. For example, grabbing someone by the skull and gouging out their eyes would (almost certainly) convince their friends or allies to back down, but if the situation doesn’t warrant that kind of force, it’s excessive, you’ve escalated too far, and there will be consequences. These can be the obvious legal issues associated with extreme violence, or it can provoke responses in opponents where, instead of backing down, they’ll be more willing to retaliate in kind. For example, pulling a gun on someone’s friend might get them to back down, where killing their friend will drive them to come after you, where they wouldn’t have with less escalation.

The problems faced by a character who escalates too far is, that they’ll make far more enemies, which will eventually catch up with them. This is part of why escalation is such a tricky concept. It’s requires a substantial amount of finesse to pull off effectively.

Escalation is also something that is seriously frowned on by most of the recreational martial arts community. Unnecessary, and excessive violence is a serious liability issue for the school, particularly if their students are children (and, honestly, that’s pretty common.) A large part of this is because of the exact problem you’re describing. The actual difficulty is about going too far. It’s not hard to go way too far in an instant, that happens all the time. But, unless your character is operating with some kind of “above-the-law” protections, going too far once is a good way to end up spending the next 25 years in a small cell.

A Prelude to Love

She was a pale, slender girl, clothed in an almost sheer white gown that flowed as she walked.  But she stepped so lightly, it was as if her feet barely touched the ground at all.  Like a ghost had wandered into my mother’s rose garden.

I called out to her and she turned in surprise.  But instead of fading away, she patted me kindly and kissed my forehead.

Shouldn’t you be in bed, little boy?”

Endymion woke with a start, nearly tumbling out of bed.  He knew that voice, didn’t he?  Slightly embarrassed and still rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Endymion began untangling himself from the sheets. It had been awhile since he’d had such a restless dream.
