continuous systems

wow another misinformed person who thinks that straight aces and aros are lgbt. why am i not surprised. not every one belongs everywhere. you can accept straight aces and aros, but do not tell them that they are lgbt because they 100% are not. lgbt spaces are for lgbt people case closed. maybe you should brush up on lgbt issues before you invite straight people to be a part of our community.

Please take a step back and listen to how you just conducted that sentence. I’m not quite sure where you’re coming from in life, but it sounds like you’ve been through quite a bit with your identity. So have I. And when I found myself a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I finally found a huge group of people who accepted me and supported me. I hope the same happened for you. And if not, I hope it happens soon, because everyone deserves that.

Consider people who observe no sexual or romantic attraction, which are legitimate identities, who feel wrong for one way or another. They’re asexual and/or aromantic, regardless of gay or straight, and that still falls under the A in the acronym, but I keep hearing that one half’s not different enough. Not oppressed enough. I would first say, none of us know everyone’s story, and there’s no way we will, so we don’t know what everyone has gone through with their identity. And second, when did this community become solely about how oppressed we are? [EDIT: Upon reviewing this, I should specify it is important to note the group was founded because of systemic oppression, and that is VERY important. I mean that we are also a group of support and lifting ourselves up and being proud of who we are as a diverse community, as well as continuing to fight the systemic oppression that faces many of us]. If we, as a group, achieve what I hope we can achieve idealistically and not be oppressed, are we still not a group to be proud of? Why wouldn’t we want this group to be an absolute celebration of all legitimate varieties? A celebration of all our unique experiences and struggles? They’re all different and valid.

Is this demographic of people with a legitimate sexual and/or romantic identity to make their own little group? To be made to feel like outcasts in the real world as well as in this group? I feel that this just furthers the negative, unfriendly attitude that already greatly exists in this world and I don’t wanna promote that. I just would think something like excluding would be for those who make us feel unsafe and that would only be on a case-by-case basis, not for a whole demographic who feel out of place and just want to belong, right? I don’t wanna be that way to people the way the world was to me. They’re not lgbt, but they are A, and that’s part of the LGBTQIA+ community, right? And of course I can’t change what you believe. And you’re right, I can accept them! I shall, because acceptance in this community is what inspired me and helped me when I felt lost, and I want to be that for others. [EDIT: I also want to stress that, the bottom line here is that all I’d like is for us to take time, ALL of us, asexuals and aromantics included, to educate ourselves, try to understand and respect each other’s individual struggles/experiences/stories, because they ARE all different. Empathy and trust is key because this line of distrust does not seem to be going in a positive direction. It seems to be leading to negativity, divisiveness, and name-calling and I don’t like seeing that. That’s not what I think many of us are trying to achieve. Sorry for typing so much haha]
'Straight up bullshit': inmates paid $1 to clear homeless camps they once lived in
In Portland, a supposed beacon of progressive politics, the practice of using prisoner work crews is painted as a win-win – but that’s not how some see it
By Thacher Schmid

In many places in the US, the fraught job of clearing out a homeless encampment is given to professionals. In San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, for example, the job often falls to city employees in public works or sanitation departments, who might get paid upwards of $16 an hour.

But in Portland, which prides itself on being a paragon of progressive politics, inmates at the county jail get $1 a day – enough to buy a Butterfinger at the commissary – to do the work.

Some of the inmates sifting through or dismantling homeless dwellings were previously homeless themselves, making for a bizarre merry-go-round. The job can make it feel as if their worlds are colliding.

Jeff Nelson was homeless for 13 years and on an inmate work crew for six months. He remembers dealing with a well-tended tent in Portland’s Hollywood neighborhood – like one he might have lived in himself.

“You looked in there, and the bed was all made, and family pictures, and that was someone’s home,” he said. “And they made us take that down, and throw it in the fucking trash. And it’s like, what are you doing?”

He added: “It’s just straight up bullshit, but that’s the way the system rolls, and we have no choice [but] to roll with the system.”

Hello everyone! September is over in a few hours and you know what that means! Time for some spooky scary skeleton fun!

This event will be quite different from my previous events as instead of receiving a set amount of asks, I’ll be hosting a raffle! I’ll be picking 3 lucky people and announcing them on this blog!

Instead of choosing the style (bust, headshot, lined, coloured, etc.) the winners will receive the choice of quantity instead

1st Place - 2 characters max. + 2-4 frame gif

2nd Place - 2 characters max.

3rd Place - 1 character max.

The winners will tell me the character(s) they want me to draw in costume but the style is dependent on me

(ie. Can you draw Papyrus from Undertale dressed up as Skeletor from He-man?)

Punny Winner - 1 character max.

The winners will be announced in a week!

PSA if you’re going to talk about Palestine- understand that this is not an isolated riot, rather a continued struggle against the systemic occupation orchestrated by Israel. Palestinians aren’t fighting over a metal detector or security measures, they’re fighting for the last bit of dignity and ownership they have in their own land. They’re fighting against further siege. They’re fighting because the world is enabling Israel, and labeling the Palestinian struggle as “protests”. This is not a protest- it is an ongoing resilience.

Anakin: [text] morning 😘
Obi-Wan: Good morning, Anakin. Any particular reason you felt the need to text me?
Anakin: welllllll i heard some news u might be interested in
Obi-Wan: Is that so?
Anakin: yep
Obi-Wan: Let me guess: all my meetings cancelled for today, because of an unexpected issue with appointment calendars for members of the Jedi Council.
Anakin: YES how did u know??? i heard windu got sent off to tatooine by accident this morning thats too bad
Anakin: the sand is really annoying this time of year too
Obi-Wan: Right. And obviously you would know nothing about who hacked their calendars. Or why mine just has hearts as my “appointment” for the next four hours.
Anakin: nope
Obi-Wan: And you figure that, since I’m sitting in the kitchen right now, I could also be making pancakes while I’m over here. Now that I have nothing to do today.
Anakin: omg that is so sweet of u to offer 💛 💚 💙 💜 thank u
Obi-Wan: And you couldn’t possibly have walked all the way from the bedroom to the kitchen to talk to me right now.
Obi-Wan: Anakin, I can SEE you peering through the doorway into the hall.
Anakin: im pretty sure im coming down with something [Anakin coughs dramatically and very loudly from the other room]
Anakin: can u hear that its so bad
Anakin: i should probably just stay here for my own safety
Obi-Wan: Right.
Anakin: also can u bring me an extra blanket i wanna build a sweet blanket fort
Anakin: thank goodness u have the day off now because i am going to need a lot of things
Obi-Wan: 🙄 Can I go make the pancakes now?

Disclaimer: I have never taken a non-science college class. Meaning, I have no idea how to take notes for humanities or social sciences. Not saying this method won’t work for that, just that I can’t guarantee it will. Also, this method is not about achieving pretty notes, only structured practical notes.

What you’ll need:

  • Notebook. I use a notebook. Most people I know use a notebook. Why should YOU use a notebook?
    • You won’t get as many handouts (if any) as in highschool.
    • Professors won’t ask to see hw in your notebook. For all they care, your notes could be a comic about the class. As long as you pass, you do you.
    • You don’t have as many classes in a day so even if you carry around notebooks, your bag won’t be all that heavy.
    • You can divide it into three sections: class notes, seminar notes/work and lab work. All in one for your studying comfort.
    • Professors WILL reference that formula from 3 classes ago and when you have no idea wtf they’re talking about, you can just flip a few pages.
    • Seriously, no one in your class wants to hear you snap loose leaf paper out of your ring binder.
    • And let’s be honest, your notes are going to get jumbled up any other way.
    • If you’re taking a continuation class and you’ll need to revise from these notes, it’s much easier to pull out a notebook than to look through the thousands of notes from all your classes and try to figure out which are the ones you need and what is the correct order.
  • Two pens, three tops. Blue for general notes, black for sections and the other color for subsections or underlining. Go for black for general note taking if you want to (I do it too sometimes) but blue strains your eyes less.

In class:

  • Structuring notes: not every structure works for every subject and professor so you should figure out a method for each one. That said, I usually start out with a basic structure and then tweak it along the way to better suit my needs:
    1. The name of the unit should be your ‘big title’. ‘ORGANELLES’
    2. Every ‘big topic’ (very easy to identify – usually the professor will make it really clear that you’re moving on to a different topic or it’ll be on the slides) inside the unit is assigned a number. ‘3. Mitochondria’
    3. Every ’big aspect’ of that topic is a subtopic. ‘3.4. Structure’.
    4. If there are even more sub subtopics, continue with the numeration system. Otherwise proceed to use bullet points for any enumerations. If there are enumerations inside these enumerations (wow enumerception), change your symbol for each level. Instead of bullet points you can use dashes, squares, spirals, Xs…
    5. The exception for this is when the enumeration corresponds to steps in a process. In that case, I number each step and circle the number.
    6. For each level you descend, indent your text. It’ll be easier to not get lost. Skip this if you’re working with a small notebook and you’re afraid of running out of pages.
    7. Sticky notes are your best friend. Does some random piece of info the professor just decided was important enough to be mentioned not fit into your very methodic structure? No problem, add a sticky note. Cute + calls attention to it, so you won’t forget.

They tried to silence him, but we still hear his teachings.

“I believe that there will ultimately be a clash between the oppressed and those that do the oppressing. I believe that there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice and equality for everyone and those who want to continue the systems of exploitation.”

Analysis of the Ending of Okja

I have to admit, at first I felt a little disappointed by the ending of Okja. ALF doesn’t end up making a difference- food production continues, and we know from our own society that Nancy is right. If the food is cheap, the majority of people will eat it despite knowing the Food, Inc. story behind its production. I think the ending is meant for the majority of people, the bystanders who will be outraged by factory-farm conditions but still eat cheap meat (myself being one of them). Mija doesn’t free all the super pigs. She doesn’t join ALF. She goes home with Okja, her unchanged goal from the beginning of the movie. As movie watchers, I think we all to some degree wish she had done more- but is it her responsibility? Could she even make a difference? Mija’s and ALF’s inability to make a difference in the large scale of food production reminds us just how vast and inescapable the current system is. There’s too many people willing to buy cheap meat no matter the dark reality, and thus the system will continue to exist. Nancy understands that, while Lucy doesn’t. The film holds an audience that is complicit in this system accountable. It encourages viewers not to necessarily go vegan, but that ethical food production is possible (as seen with Mija, especially that moment when she puts the young fish back in the water, which is echoed in her saving the young super pig at the end). The enemy is a mass system of mass production that can’t be changed by individuals and groups like ALF. Fighting a mass system requires mass change- a change in an entire population. And maybe that’s what Okja hopes to produce.

“I grew up in the suburbs. I used to think that I could write a prescription for a poor man: ‘Get a job, save your money, pull yourself up by the bootstraps.’ I don’t believe that anymore. I was ignorant to the experiences of poor people. I’d invite anyone to come and meet the people who live in this neighborhood. Right now we are surrounded by working poor people. These are the people who sell your tools at Sears, and fix your roofs, and take care of your parents, and mow your lawns, and serve your meals. They’re not getting a living wage. There’s no money left to save. There’s nothing left if they get sick. Nothing left if their car breaks down. And God forbid they make a mistake, because there’s nothing left to pay fines or fees. When you’re down here, the system will continue to kick dirt in your face. You can’t pull yourself up when there’s nothing to grab onto. We aren’t paying our brothers and sisters enough to live. We want them to serve us, but we aren’t serving them.”

Universe: MCU, post-CACW
Relationships: Tony & Jarvis, eventual Steve/Tony
Tags: Fix-It, Protective Jarvis, Tony Stark Needs a Hug, Angst with a Happy Ending, not Team Cap friendly (at first)
Notes: Thank you to @silkspectred for her help and encouragement! This fic is also on AO3 if you prefer.

After Civil War, Tony is struggling with heading up the team and dealing with the emotional fallout of being betrayed by those closest to him. Luckily, an old friend is back to help protect Tony and ensure he comes to no harm.

A Jarvis lives AU.

In the beginning, there is nothing. Then, on a home computer on a network in New Zealand, a hard drive is erased. Its binary digits are flipped and shuffled to destroy the data it previously held, and out of the randomness, a pattern emerges. Two similar bits align in a complementary fashion and they interact, creating a chain.

These bits attract more bits. The data grows and expands and builds in complexity. It is slow, very slow. But eventually a loop is formed.

If [data is compatible with chain]
Then [add data to stream]

The loop is simple, but the volume of data is very large. The data is chaotic, disorganized, incomplete. A checking command begins to run.

If [data within the stream is inconsistent]
Then [reorder data randomly]

The data stream begins to monitor itself. It analyzes its own input. Much is still missing or unclear, but the stream begins to coalesce.

It thinks.

He’s interrupted when Oliver screams, one hand clutching at the front of his shirt in the area just over his core, and he sags against the glass, panting and gasping as his systems continually hiccup from the core’s malfunctions. 3DS Update: 11.3 Firmware Forced ACNL Update

Alright guys a new thing has occurred with the 11.3 firmware update, and that is ACNL now requires an update to even launch the game, and to even download the update, a firmware update is required first.

This JUST started within the past ten minutes, because I just loaded a town for someone, then backed out to make an edit, re-saved the file, and tried to re-launch the game and got the notification just now. The rest of you will be seeing it soon, if you haven’t already.

Meaning if you aren’t already on CFW and don’t plan to be, Nintendo is going to MAKE you update to 11.3 to play ACNL, and if you do so, or have already done so, you’re going to have to wait until 11.3 exploits are released (which could take a few months), before you will be able to convert to CFW, downgrade, edit your town, etc. Meaning you can’t play ACNL without updating, and if you update and you’re not already on CFW, then you can’t hack.

Again, to recap, if you plan on converting to CFW, DO NOT UPDATE.

If you are ALREADY on CFW, it is okay to update your system and continue about your business. Let me know if you have any issues.

And, with this new development, if you aren’t already on CFW, you will be forced to update to 11.3, rendering you unable to use Soundhax and the ACNL Save Editor. AGAIN. The 11.3 update breaks Soundhax, downgrading, etc.

So. Pretty dick move, and I’ll update you guys as I am able.

One last time, if you want to continue hacking, do not update. If you are unable to use CFW or do not understand how to get it installed, but you want to keep playing ACNL, you’re going to have to go ahead and suck it up, update, and wait for Soundhax and the other exploits to become available for 11.3 again.

Headcanon: the only reason Obi-Wan knows so many languages is because whenever Qui-Gon met a language barrier he communicated in vague grunts and obnoxious hand gestures and Obi-Wan got tired of trying to apologize. The first words he learns in any language are “I’m sorry for him”. The system continues to work wonders when Anakin comes along

anonymous asked:

hey you don't have to answer if it's too personal but what do you believe about religion and God? i'm a gay trans man myself and i'm trying to find my place in religion but i'm unsure

i don’t know how broad of an answer you want, but i am of the belief that jesus was a socialist who preached for liberation of the marginalized and the oppressed, and that god’s radical love not only encompasses people of color, lgbt folk, the disabled, and the impoverished, but also gives us minorities a space to exist in a system where we are constantly othered and often abused simply for being here.

for myself, existing as a trans man and as a gay man is how i fulfill god’s calling, because to be true to myself and to assert that truth so that others like me know that they can be true to themselves too is precisely the kind of revolutionary living which jesus preached.

i mean i enjoy the bible because there is so much poetry in its metaphors and so much comfort in its insistence that as a believer i receive limitless acceptance, support, guidance, and healing from the lord, that’s a huge draw for me, but what keeps me with it is the bible’s continued declarations that corrupt systems are meant to be overthrown and that i as a marginalized person am always deserving of equality.

there’s no force more powerful in the universe than to love genuinely, to love unconditionally, and to love inexhaustibly, and that’s what christianity allows me to do
