There’s a rich body of evidence that links chocolate to heart health.

Now comes a new study that finds people who consume small amounts of chocolate each week have a lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation, a heart condition characterized by a rapid or irregular heartbeat.

“The rate of atrial fibrillation was 20 percent lower for people consuming two to six servings [of chocolate] per week” compared with people who ate chocolate less than once per month, explains study author Elizabeth Mostofsky, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The findings are published in the journal BMJ Heart.

Those of you who’ve been following this page for a bit understand that I’m a certified chocoholic. But it’s not just the sweet stuff I crave. You squinted your eyes, and almost unnoticeably you shook your head, but by the way he choked on his beer you knew he had seen it.

“I don’t know” you said as you watched the blue eyed angel with the corner of your eye, his attention was focused on a book he was reading, you thought he looked ridiculously cute when his brows would furrow with whatever he was thinking.
You felt yourself blushing, so you cleared your throat, “I really don’t think so. Why, are you interested?” You winked at him.

Dean wiggled his brows “I might be, ” he said and Cas, who had remained in silence, accidentally dropped the book he was holding moments ago causing you to startle and stop jokingly flirting with Dean.

“Excuse me, I didn’t mean to interrupt you. The book just slipped from my hands, ” he said while picking the book up, and instead of returning to it, he joined both of you at the table you shared.

“No worries, man. Do you have any plans for this Valentines?” Dean asked Cas and the angel just turned his head to where he met the smirking green eyed man and gave him a dead “no” for an answer.

Seven Ways to Actually Start Practicing

So everyone knows that the hardest part of practicing is actually making your way to the practice room. Even this semester, with my recital coming up, I’ve made it all the way to the basement of the music building, totally intending to practice, then turned left and wound up in the music lounge and not practiced/practiced way less than I should have, instead. Getting into the practice room is 80% of the battle - now, how to actually get yourself there? Well, here’s seven ways how to do that.

  1. Have a countdown on your lock screen to when your next performance is. Not gonna lie, knowing that my recital (yes I’m going to keep mentioning this it is my life right now) is in 25 days really keeps me focused. Knowing when you’re going to be performing that stuff helps keep you on task, because you know where you want to be and you know EXACTLY how long you have to get there.
  2. Get some Bribery Tea. Or chocolate, or mints, or some other small but tasty thing. Be strict with yourself and only consume the Bribery Tea (/chocolate/mint/cookie) AFTER you’ve practiced for a decent amount of time in a day.
  3. Be super consistent with practice times. The days I get the most practicing done are Tuesdays and Thursdays, because I have a two-hour, uninterrupted stretch of time both days which I have dedicated, 100%, to practicing. That’s all I’ve used that time period for for the past semester. I may not practice consistently other days, because stuff creeps into those other times, but by golly Tuesday and Thursday practice will happen. See if you can do the same thing,
  4. Set an alarm on your phone and don’t let yourself turn it off until you are IN the practice room. There’s nothing quite like a never-ending repetition of the Marimba ringtone to bring even the most ardent procrastinator to their knees. If you don’t turn it off until you get to the room, you’ll get there pretty goshdarn quick just to have an excuse to turn it off.
  5. Have your best friend promise to irritate the heck out of you until you practice. They will JUMP at the chance if your best friend is anything like mine. That’s what best friends do - irritate each other out of love. Having an actual human holding you accountable on a daily basis can work wonders.
  6. Think of that one pianist who’s so dedicated that they’re still at the practice room until 9pm on a Friday night - don’t let them show you up toooo badly. Pianists, pretend I wrote “violinist” up there. If they can spend ¾ths of their waking hours in a practice room, you can probably manage an hour or two a day.
  7. Remember that you actually LIKE YOUR INSTRUMENT. I presume you chose to major in music or take lessons because you actually like playing your instrument, right? If not, go take some time to reevaluate what you’re doing. If not, go do that thing you like doing! Maybe at the start or end of every practice session, work on a piece you enjoy that you aren’t doing in lessons. Do it for the love of it! That will help a lot, I think.

And there’s your tips. Don’t get too down about not practicing as much as you think you should! Just try to make tomorrow a better practice day!

Graphic T-Shirt Friday

I apparently donated my Boston Strong t-shirt so this is the closest I have to an encouraging message: Nevertheless, She Persisted. 

I am desperately jealous of all the people heading to Boston this weekend to spectate or to run the marathon. I think this really is a sign I need to get back up there for the race SOON.

Work is so crazy that a Monday feels like it should be Thursday. My head feels like exploding at the end of every day. It’s a frustrating feeling because I’m fairly convinced I have dozens of things slipping through all sorts of cracks. It’s good overall though. We were pretty slow for the first few months of the year and it was definitely freaking my boss out. So: busy is good. Stress is less good but currently a necessary evil. 

Luckily, I am not sick anymore so I’ve been back to running and swimming and last night I died a little during spin class (in a good way). Is it weird that a solid exercise schedule gives me a sense of control? Probably.  Steady exercise also lets me feel less guilty about all the Easter chocolate I’ve consumed. My mom sent me a care package from Germany and I know we all know this but, German chocolate is the best chocolate.

I’m also going to have to write out my marathon training for Berlin soon! Should get started sometime in mid-May which is crazy. Obviously, I’m going to continue doing Hansons. The question is just, what’s the goal pace this time?

Aaaand there’s the phone. Again. At least I’ll be in Reno soon! I mean, still working. But with mountains around me so it’ll feel better.

“Y/N.” He whispers in a hushed tone, hoping the teacher doesn’t hear as he slides a note across the space between your desks. You debate responding, not wanting to get in trouble, but also not wanting to leave your best friend hanging with a note that could contain top secret information.

You slyly reach behind your chair and grope for it, Taehyung compensating for your lack of sight by guiding the paper into your palm. He sits back and looks out the window once you take it, pretending nothing ever happened as he yawns absently.

Careful not to be too loud, you unfold the neat creases of the note that Taehyung seemed to fold so aptly, letting your eyes adjust to his messy chicken scratch. Room 702? This afternoon after school and before practice? Hehehe we’re passing notes hehehe.

You shake your head minutely at his cute and odd nature, picking up your pencil- topped with a cute little Rilakkuma eraser Tae bought you- and composing your brilliant, wonderfully thought out message of: sounds good, before folding it back up and aimlessly throwing it to the floor behind you, hearing Tae move in his seat as he gets the idea to pick it up.

So as you might know, I started back at the gym last week and I actively trying to eat a lot better and not consume so much chocolate. I have started weighing myself again, although I know this is not always a true indication of progress. I need to sync my scales again to show body fat, muscle, water, etc. anyway.. here goes

Last Week: 87.5kgs
This Week: 85.9kgs

So I’ve lost 1.6kgs. That was with three gym sessions and still a lot of treats. I always lose a decent amount the first week back after eating crappy. Although, when I was 10 days postpartum I was 82kgs… meaning I put on around 5kgs since having Evelyn.

I’m want to be around the 78kgs mark once I go back to work in 10 weeks. So I need to lose around 8kgs. It’s doable. But I won’t beat myself up if I don’t get there. 78kgs was my weight most of high school. My body looks decent at this weight. Not great, as I’ve been a lot thinner before (64kgs- January 2016). But I know I’ll probably never attain that again and that’s okay. I’d rather be happy and enjoy my life.

I was 70kgs when I fell pregnant, so obviously I’d like to aim to get back there. I’ll be happy if I can do it by the end of the year, because the start of next year is probably when we’ll start trying for another baby. So another 8kgs to lose in 5 or so months.

I’m pretty determined to get back to pre-baby weight by the time I fall pregnant with another. We want Evelyn to be at least a year and half if/when we have another. So if we start trying the start of 2018, that’ll make her that age. And of course we probably won’t conceive straight away anyway… or maybe we will. Who knows. There’s a year and half between my older brother and I and then only a year and 2 months between my younger brother and I. We were all so close growing up, so I want that for our family. My sister is 5 years younger than me and we hated each other as kids, so I want to try and avoid big age gaps if possible.
