conserve and protect

The last remaining Northern White Rhino male being guarded in Sudan. As of November 2015, there are only three rhinos of this subspecies left. They all belong to the Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic but live in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and are protected round-the-clock by armed guards.

Giant squids might be even bigger than we realized

According to research from Charles Paxton, fisheries ecologist and statistician at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews, published in the Journal of Zoology this month, the giant squid could grow to reach as much as 65 feet. But even that is a “conservative analysis,” as size could protect against their #1 predator.

Reaching up to 4ft in length the Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle (Chitra chitra) is one of the largest fresh water turtles in the world, but also one of the most endangered. Listed as number 12 of the top 25 most endangered turtles and tortoises. This species has been heavily affected by poaching and habitat destruction, and could be lost without our protection.

  • Conservatives: We have to protect our women! Stop transgender people from going into women's bathrooms!!
  • Conservatives: *elect a sexual predator as president *

Republicans who feel economic anxiety and ‘left out’ are the same people who trash unions, socialism, and equality.

The thought of ‘non-white prosperity’ scares them to the bone.

Rural white conservatives see life as 'protecting what they got’, rather than sharing in a bigger, better future.

Hi guys! I’m doing a series of ocean conservation pieces to put on redbubble and this is part one.

The bluefin tuna is grossly overfished, and population has dropped to endangered levels. Due in part to the sushi industry, populations continue to drop as the demand for tuna rises. The bluefin tuna is a top predator, and if it disappears, the impact on ocean ecosystems will be large. Consider stopping your consumption of tuna, or limiting it to tuna that was caught with sustainable fishing.

All profit I make on these sales will be donated to Sea Shepherd to promote ocean conservation and protect the tuna.

Also, from that same Joan Scott article in 1992, there’s this:

“"Political correctness" is the label that has been attached to any program or position that attacks or calls into question the status quo. Coined by the left as an internal criticism of moralizing dogmatisms, the term has been seized by the right and used to disqualify all critical efforts. It seems to be working so well as a form of intimidation that it has become a theme in the Bush presidential campaign for 1992. Demands for change in the name of tolerance, fairness, and justice are, under the “p.c.” label, described as dangerous orthodoxies, attempts to impose thought control on otherwise benign individuals. In the name of defending the individual’s right to think and act as he pleases, the conservative ideologists protect existing structures and practices from all critical scrutiny and even moderate attempts to reform.”

sound familiar?

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (otherwise known as the BP oil spill) in April of 2010 flowed for 87 days and released an estimated total of 210 million gallons of oil. This spill left a sheet of petroleum on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico and is one of the most devastating spills in history. In November 2012, BP and the United States Department of Justice settled federal criminal charges with BP pleading guilty to 11 counts of manslaughter, two misdemeanors, and a felony count of lying to Congress. BP also agreed to four years of government monitoring of its safety practices and ethics, and the Environmental Protection Agency announced that BP would be temporarily banned from new contracts with the US government.

South Africa’s Black Mambas, comprised mostly of female rangers, is on a mission to protect wildlife from poachers. The anti-poaching unit patrol the Balule Private Game Reserve three weeks at a time, walking almost 13 miles per day. Since 2013, the unit has shut down five poacher camps and reduced snaring (animal baiting and trapping) by 76 percent in the reserve.

“I am not afraid. I know what I am doing and I know why I am doing it,” said Leitah Mkhabela, a Black Mamba ranger. “If you see the poachers you tell them not to try, tell them we are here and it is they who are in danger.”

I joined @sealinefox on a Tule Elk Tracking trip, and we saw over 200 Tule Elk!
I learned so much, starting with the fact that Tule Elk are a subspecies of elk found only in California which were thought to have been hunted to extinction in the 1870s. A single breeding pair was discovered in the tule marshes of the San Joaquin Valley and conservation measures were implemented to protect the them. Today, there are over 4,000 wild Tule Elk in California, yet most of the public are still unaware of their existence.

in the last year, the number of applicants to study nursing + midwifery has dropped by almost 1000, a 23% drop. there are already 24,000 nursing vacancies in the uk. the govt was warned about the impact of stopping nursing bursaries but went ahead and did it anyway.

interesting strategy by the conservative party who vowed to protect and improve the nhs in their manifesto.

Red Cliffs National Conservation Area in Utah protects a unique transition zone – the meeting of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin Desert and Mojave Desert. Where these distinct landscapes overlap, unusual plants and animals have evolved, including flowers like the dwarf bearclaw poppy and Shivwits milk-vetch that grow nowhere else on earth. Explore the area’s flora, wildlife and spectacular desert scenery with more than 130 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Photo by Bob Wick @mypubliclands

anonymous asked:

Do you think women's rights are considered conservative now? Like what first and second wave brought us. Because I want to conserve and protect my rights but not in the third wave sjw sense, more of I want to protect my rights from Sharia Law and I just want to live my life how I want. This is why I love America. I think Factual Feminist is right wing but I want your take on this.

Author Camille Paglia once said  "it is Capitalist America that produced the modern independent woman.“  She is of course  correct. Modern Feminism is not about political and legal equality but about reshaping the thinking of society  to conform to a specific cultural ideology. And that cultural ideology  exists to serve the needs of  a political philosophy that is authoritarian in nature. Its goal is therefore not to "liberate” anyone, whether they be male or female. It is an age old political philosophy that believes that the only meaningful freedom is to be cared for and to be controlled by a presiding political power; a power that invariably  portrays itself as saving one group of citizens from another; whether it is one sex from another, one economic class from another, or one race from another. It divides citizens across every conceivable line so that it can serve as the unifier and thus the ruler.

I have never quite bought the division of Feminism into three waves. What I see is a women’s suffrage movement during the late 19th and early 20th century; a movement that was genuinely about liberation. During this period the term “Feminism” was only embraced by the more extreme activists of the time who typically subscribed to either Marxism or Socialism (it was coined by the Socialist Charles Fourier).  The term was frowned upon by the mainstream of the women’s rights movement  (as explained in the writings of modern Feminist Jo Freeman).  It did not become mainstream until the early 1970s and with it, many of the extreme views of the old Feminists as well (a contempt for the nuclear family, a penchant for Socialism).

Philosophically, what is called “Second Wave” Feminism is the  close ancestor of modern Feminism (and i have posted many quotes in the past to demonstrate this). Yet some of the consequences of the movement were very good, such as helping to open the doors to allow women to pursue whatever kind of career they want to in life.  People with different intentions may sometimes value the same goals for different reasons. The real intention of the Left wing Feminist was not to grant women  greater freedom within a free enterprise or “Capitalist” economy, it was to curb the influence of the “Patriarchy” (in much the same way as the intention of the Collectivist is not to make the poor better  off, but to make the rich less rich).  The ultimate goal is not to empower private citizens (whether male or female) but to take power from whichever private parties happen to possess it,  and turn it over to the fair and just administration of an enlightened political  state.

Join #mypubliclandsroadtrip Today at Headwaters Forest Reserve in California

Spectacular in its beauty, the Headwaters Forest Reserve is also a vital ally in conservation efforts to protect the most iconic forest species in the Pacific Northwest. Located 6 miles southeast of Eureka, California, these 7,542 acres of public lands feature magnificent stands of old-growth redwood trees that provide nesting habitat for the marbled murrelet (a small Pacific seabird) and the northern spotted owl. Both species are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, as are the coho salmon, chinook salmon, and steelhead trout that have important habitat in the reserve’s stream systems.

Joining forces, the federal government and the State of California acquired the land for the reserve in 1999 to protect these important resources. The historic value of a once busy mill town named Falk is also commemorated in interpretive signs along the Elk River Trail, which follows an old logging road to the now vanished community. The BLM partners with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to manage the Headwaters Forest Reserve as part of the National Conservation Lands.

Scott Pruitt Confirmed To Lead Environmental Protection Agency
The Senate has confirmed Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as the EPA's next administrator. Pruitt is a longtime critic of the agency.

Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt has been confirmed as the next administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, an agency Pruitt has long criticized.

The Senate approved Pruitt on a 52-46 vote Friday afternoon, with two Democrats — Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota — voting for his nomination. Republican Susan Collins of Maine voted no.

The vote came after a failed Democratic attempt to delay the confirmation proceedings until after a new batch of documents from Pruitt’s state office are made public under court order. Those emails will be released beginning next week.

So I started reading More Money Than God and this is what I have learned about Alfred Jones, the first hedge fund manager:

  • While working as a diplomat in Weimar Germany, he fell in love with a twice-divorced communist and anti-Nazi activist and married her. He was fired as a result of this, but stayed in Germany to work secretly with the Leninist Organization. After a few months, they divorced, and Jones returned to America.
  • Back in America, he married again and spent his honeymoon on the front lines in Spain, where they drank scotch with Dorothy Parker and Hemingway.
  • After getting a PhD in sociology, he moved away from communism and became a journalist writing from a sort of centrist/liberal perspective. He described his views as “as conservative as possible in protecting the free market and as radical as necessary in securing the welfare of the people.”
  • He started a hedge fund because he needed money and had already failed twice to start a magazine. A lot of his capital came from a friend of his who was a biographer of Lenin.
  • He would keep his fund market-neutral by looking at the beta of stocks to the market when determining how much to buy or short. This was before the development of modern portfolio theory–also before computers, so he had to calculate all the betas by hand.
  • His tax lawyer came up with the 2-and-20 compensations scheme because he realized that if Jones took a share of the profits rather than a flat fee, that would be taxed at the capital gains rate. Instead of revealing his actual motivation, Jones told investors he took 20% of the profits in an homage to Phoenician merchants, who kept a fifth of the profits from successful voyages.
  • He was obsessed with the theory that Edward de Vere was the actual author of Shakespeare’s plays and named his poodle Edward.
