conservation groups

so there is currently a bipartisan bill that congress is working on to improve access to hearing aids by making a class of hearing aids available over the counter. apparently only about 30% of people with hearing loss have hearing aids, and one of the main reasons why is that getting them can be very cost prohibitive. so having low-level aids available over the counter will hopefully make them more affordable at least to some people. these hearing aids will be fda regulated and required to meet minimum standards. hearing loss advocacy groups and the AARP support the bill

and conservative interest groups are opposing the bill basically just because elizabeth warren is involved with the bill 🙄

Happy Valentine’s Day my marine bio lovelies!

I give you, all the above! Shark Love!

Instead of something cheesy to give your admirer, why not make a donation to your favourite conservation group? Show them you care not only about them, but the marine environment too!

No-no, lance with a fake mermaid tail that he wears in the water and entertaining kids. A hose that constantly provides air so he can stay underwater for long periods of time. Swimming with peaceful fish in a large tank.

Okay I absolutely LOVE THIS so give me an entire Voltron aquarium AU

  • Voltron Aquarium was owned by Alfor, but he retired and his best friend Coran took over
  • His daughter Allura wanted to take over because she studies zoology but she’s still young and in school and Alfor wants her to graduate ,so Coran takes over so he knows his staff will still be taken care of
  • Allura still plays a huge part, she’s one of their best animal handlers and she teaches a lot of programs for local schools
  • Shiro is their primary physician for the animals, so he and Allura usually work together a lot to see if problems are medical or behavioral and just generally make sure the animals are happy and healthy
  • Hunk works there too, as a sort of grounds keeper and technician to make sure the outdoor displays look nice, the exhibits have proper lighting and temperatures and space and nothing is broken
  • And during the summer they offer boat tours! They have a boat they keep at a local marina and Hunk drives the boat while Allura teaches programs
  • Pidge can’t work there because she’s still in high school, but she volunteers there every weekend bc she’s a huge nerd
  • Sometimes she helps Allura teach programs and she knows all the animals and could babble about their ecosystems for hours
  • Keith is a marine biology and environmental science student at the local college and is there basically all the time because he has a membership that gets him free admission
  • Shiro is his best friend from childhood and they both grew up on the beach and developed a love for aquatic life so they both study it
  • So Keith goes there to hang out with Shiro, lend a hand when it’s needed bc he knows the whole staff and aquarium pretty well, but mostly he just hangs out by his favorite exhibits while doing homework
  • A local extremist “animal rights” group and publication called GALRA holds protests outside the aquarium saying that holding animals in captivity is wrong
  • The staff is annoyed and Pidge fights them a lot bc they work with a lot of conservation groups to create animal welfare programs and protect water rights, and their animals are all well taken care of with appropriate exhibits
  • Nevertheless GALRA is loud and public, and so they notice they’ve been losing money, especially on the days when the protestors are there
  • So they need a big new idea that can bring people in, but it has to be something they can be public about without GALRA condemning them and making things even worse
  • Hunk is the one who suggests it, he knows his neighbor is obsessed with ocean life and is a professional mermaid
  • It’s perfect because the aquarium needs a non-animal based exhibit and Lance has been struggling to make ends meet
  • He works during the day as a fitness instructor, and he’s studying at the community college nearby, but the mermaid thing is mostly just a hobby that he and his partner Plaxum do every once in a while
  • He and Plaxum get hired as a mermaid duo to perform shows fairly regularly
  • Keith shows up one day and notices it’s really crowded and is like ???? because he doesn’t know of any new exhibits or anything
  • So he goes exploring and sees one of the pools is occupied by two people
  • He looks around and there’s no staff around, are these people trespassing? So he goes over and starts telling Lance that guests can’t just jump into the pool, and there’s a crowd gathering so he needs to get out before he gets in huge trouble
  • Lance just looks all confused, then laughs and is like “Come back in 20 minutes”
  • So Keith gets all annoyed and leaves but he can’t help it, he’s curious, so he comes back later to see that these people are still in the pool, only now he notices they have mermaid tails and are putting on a whole show
  • And look, Lance may have just been doing this mostly as a hobby, but dang if he isn’t good at it
  • Turns out Lance is studying ecology and biology and like wow, he knows what he’s talking about
  • He and Plaxum look so graceful performing these shows, and he is really good at charming the audience and putting on a very convincing act while also teaching kids about marine ecology
  • At first Keith thinks it’s silly but I mean, Lance is very attractive and the mermaid costume is doing wonders for him
  • And Lance has his whole mermaid act, so he is very sassy and fun and teases Keith when he gets caught staring at them and pretending not to be invested
  • But like he’s clearly there with Plaxum and so he kinda just observes from afar
  • Except he’s there late one day, and sees Lance leaving after a show, and Keith realizes this is his first time seeing Lance with clothes, and his hair is dry and kinda curly from the water, and he looks tired but so so cute
  • So Keith is like whoaaa okay run away but nope, Lance sees him and starts up a conversation
  • And it turns out the mermaid persona is like, exactly that, a persona? And Lance is actually very sweet and soft-spoken and nice and wow Keith is done for
  • Keith just so happens to start hanging around the aquarium during every show, and Lance is an oblivious idiot who thinks he’s there to watch Plaxum and be a fish nerd
  • Cue some good old fashioned mutual pining
  • Until one day, Keith is hanging around waiting for Shiro to clock out and notices Hunk talking to Lance
  • So Keith starts to walk over and Lance doesn’t notice and Keith overhears him talking about how cute some guy is and how he’s there all the time but he only ran into him the one time and he can’t be flirting while doing a show
  • Keith is all :( because Lance likes someone else
  • And Lance still doesn’t notice him and is like “I don’t even know his name! I just call him cute mullet boy with the red jacket in my head” and like
  • Cue Hunk looking behind Lance to Keith, with his mullet and his red jacket and a freaking lightbulb goes off
  • So Hunk is like “His name is Keith” and Lance is like ?!?!?! you know him?! Can you introduce me?
  • So Hunk is like ummmm introduce yourself
  • And Lance turns around and realizes Keith has been eavesdropping and wow they are both very gay
  • So they start dating and they’re the ocean’s greatest power couple
  • Anyways Lance’s exhibit does wonderfully and GALRA can’t fight them on it and the protestors stop showing up so business is doing really well
  • And it’s happy and gay and mermaids bring everyone together!

Idaho boy injured, family dog killed by government 'cyanide bomb'
A "cyanide bomb" planted by U.S. predator-control agents targeting coyotes near homes and hiking trails on BLM land in Idaho exploded when a boy handled the device, injuring him and killing his dog, authorities and relatives said on Friday.

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A “cyanide bomb” planted by U.S. predator-control agents targeting coyotes near homes and hiking trails in Idaho exploded when a boy handled the device, injuring him and killing his dog, authorities and relatives said on Friday.

Canyon Mansfield, 14, was playing with his yellow Labrador retriever, Casey, on Thursday afternoon near his home east of Pocatello when he saw what he thought was a sprinkler head on the ground and touched the device, causing it to detonate.

The explosion sprayed the boy and his 3-year-old, 90-pound (40 kg) pet with toxic cyanide gas, according to the boy’s mother, Theresa Mansfield.

“Canyon said there was a bang like a bomb, then an explosion of an orange substance that covered him and Casey, who was writhing in pain on the ground before he died right in front of Canyon,” she said.

Her husband, Pocatello physician Mark Mansfield, rushed to the scene and pounded on the dog’s chest in a futile effort to revive the animal.

The family and first-responders underwent decontamination procedures and the boy, who was sprayed in the face, was tested for cyanide poisoning at a hospital for the second time Friday, officials and family members said.

The device, called an M-44, was among several placed in the area by Wildlife Services, an arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that targets coyotes, wolves, cougars, foxes and other animals considered nuisances to farms and ranches.

The agency has been sued by conservation groups claiming that its programs to poison, trap and shoot various predator species violate federal environmental and wildlife protection laws.

Republicans attacked Democrats for passing Obamacare in “secret.” Now they’re doing the same.

  • Republicans are planning to vote Thursday evening on an amended version of the American Health Care Act.
  • But with conservatives and the Tea Party’s Freedom Caucus in revolt, the GOP didn’t have the votes to get the House Republican bill through. So they started changing it.
  • Now, mere hours before the vote, it’s unclear what changes Republicans are actually making to the bill, giving Americans almost no time to understand what it is the House is actually going to vote on, and how those changes would impact Americans.
  • In 2009, however, the same Republican Party bashed the way the Affordable Care Act was passed because — you guessed it — the American people supposedly couldn’t get all the necessary information about the the Affordable Care Act before Congress voted. Read more (3/23/17 8:45 AM)

Can you talk about why the passenger pigeon went extinct? we were breeding pigeons LONG BEFORE them so why did conservation fail so badly?

At the time, extinction was an utterly alien concept. It was like suggesting a Trump presidency in the 1990’s. You have to understand: this was the MOST populous bird in North America. Flocks could potentially take HOURS to pass by overhead.

This super gregarious nature made them easy prey. Particularly large tunnel nets could catch as many as 3,500 birds in a single go.

i’m gonna talk about how these birds nested for a bit: so a mommy pigeon and a daddy pigeon would settle down to raise a family, along with thousands of their closest friends. These babies would grow really, REALLY fat. Parent pigeons wouldn’t wait until their baby could fly. They’d just take off and leave the baby to figure it out on its own. These nestlings would be particularly vulnerable to predators (including humans). Now, for most of passenger pigeon history, this didn’t really matter. Most predators could eat their fill and not make a dent in the literal millions of pigeons.

And then the railroads came. Finally, humans had a way to DELIVER millions of pigeon corpses all across America. They didn’t just hunt until they weren’t hungry anymore. We could hunt more and more and GET MONEY FOR IT. This was actually embraced by society as a whole, since passenger pigeons were ‘agricultural pests’. The first attempt to protect their population was in 1857 and it was laughed out of the Committee. The birds were described as “wonderfully prolific”.

By the 1870’s, their population was noticeably smaller and conservation groups took action.

It didn’t go well. Despite laws, people continued to trap and kill the birds because 'eeeeyyyy there’s still plenty to go around!’ People were looking at distinct populations rather than the one as a whole. It was the modern version of going, “we’re not in a drought because it rained YESTERDAY”.

Captive breeding didn’t go well either because these birds NEEDED huge flocks to reproduce. No flock, no reproduction. Zoos with as many as 250 birds STILL couldn’t get them to raise their babies. Today, we MIGHT have had a chance using the mirror trick (flamingos are frequently induced to breed by setting up mirrors to make them feel like they’re surrounded by 20 of their best friends).

So, to answer: it was a many-fold mistake. Large-scale hunting, rapid habitat loss, and an understanding of their social needs that came far too late.

Nevada becomes the 8th state to ban conversion therapy for minors
Nevada this week became the eight state to ban conversion therapy, a practice aimed at changing the sexual orientation of individuals who identify as gay or lesbian.
By Chandrika Narayan, CNN

This week, Nevada officially became the eighth state to ban the abusive practice of conversion therapy for minors. Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Senate Bill 201 into law on Wednesday, joining New Mexico, California, Vermont, Oregon, New Jersey, New York and Illinois (plus D.C.).

One big caveat, though, is that the bill includes a religious exemption that allows conversion-esque counseling by clergy members. So while the bill bans health professionals from trying to change a minor’s sexual orientation or gender identity, technically a religious official still can.

“Conversion therapy has been disavowed by medical experts and is considered a non-effective method of treatment that can cause harm to an adolescent,” Sandoval said after signing the bill Wednesday. "This law will help protect some of our state’s most vulnerable youth.“

The bill was amended to exempt religious organizations and allow counseling by members of the clergy. Religious groups and conservatives insist that such a ban would infringe on their rights to religious freedom.

"Banning conversion therapy makes Nevada a safer place for children who are at a higher risk for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and even suicide,” bill sponsor Sen. David Parks of Las Vegas Parks said in a statement, reported by The Las Vegas Review-Journal. "This bill is a major step forward in building a more equal and inclusive state.“

This is a good step overall, but I’m really disappointed in the religious exemption. Abuse is abuse, whether it takes place in a doctor’s office or a place of worship. The work continues.

Tom Price belongs to a fringe, conservative group of doctors known for its unorthodox health care views – and its bashing of the department he now leads. Amy Goldstein reports: “The group, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), holds positions that are at wide variance with basics of federal health policy. It opposes Medicare … [and offers] extensive training to doctors on how to opt out of the program. It also opposes mandatory vaccination as ‘equivalent to human experimentation,’ a stance contrary to requirements in every state and recommendations of major medical organizations and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Such positions are part of an underlying credo, which Price has long espoused, that doctors should be autonomous in treating their patients — with far fewer government rules, medical quality standards, insurance coverage limits and legal penalties when they make mistakes. The congressman’s ardent hostility toward the Affordable Care Act, before its passage in 2010 and ever since, springs from that credo’s anti-government sentiment.“

The term altright is an extremely broad term that fits a huuge group of conservative people into it. Technically I'm altright because I'm not a republican but I'm conservative. I guess I'm complaining because it's such a useless and broad term. If you want to attack white nationalists im all for it but call them by their actual group not just "altright" it does no one any good and it lables decent people as nazis.

“Alt right” is a term coined by avowed white supremacist and little rich boy Richard Spencer in 2010 as a way to repackage white supremacy and fascism.  Spencer himself advocates for a “whites-only” “ethnostate” where racialized people are removed.  Spencer has questioned whether Jews are people or have souls and has endorsed black genocide.  He uses a term coined by Nazi propagandists to refer to the news media and his alt right pals respond by sieg heiling him.

White supremacists coined the term “alt right” and have used the term to push their racist extremist agenda into the mainstream.  If you choose to call yourself “alt right,” this is the kind of person and the kind of ideology you are choosing to associate yourself with.  Knowing this (and having read this you can’t say that you didn’t know) and continuing to refer to yourself as “alt right” = deserving whatever consequences befall you as a result.

As Joy Kogawa put it, “if there’s one thing that history teaches us, just one thing, it’s that bystanders and perpetrators are on the same side.”

Time to choose your side, Anon.

LGBT+/QUEER PPL PLS READ:

ok so just for the info of people who (wisely) have nothing to do with shitty ace discourse, I need y’all in the community to know what the fuck exactly has been going down:

in an attempt to make a community standard that explicitly excludes aces and aros, discoursers claimed that to be in the community you have to be either trans or sga* (same gender attracted.)

when many aces/aros pointed out that this excluded nonbinary/agender people who do not identify as trans, intersex people, questioning/just queer identifying people, Two Spirit people, and bisexuals who are attracted to 2+ genders but not their own, discoursers literally started insisting that those groups were either “actually cishet” and/or are not allowed into the community.

furthermore, they started a campaign against the term “queer” and all queer identifying people, condemned anyone who considered themselves part of the “queer” community, and started censoring genderqu**r (like that) and telling everyone to “stop identifying as a slur.”

I need y’all to be aware that this little “movement,” regardless of your stances on aces/aros, is antagonizing, excluding, misgendering, and harming these people inside the community and it’s not just harmless internet discourse. there is real impact on these groups, real children being denied support, and people need to start responding and shutting this shit down.

TL;DR: anti-ace discourse has progressed to them policing and excluding certain bisexuals, nonbinary people, agender people, intersex people, Two Spirit people, and transphobically censoring genderqueer people’s identities while attacking and demeaning anyone who identifies as queer. It’s not just about aces and aros anymore. Please do something. We need help.

*sga also has traceable roots back to conversion therapy and is still in use by therapists and conservative groups, but the hypocrisy is apparently lost on this anti-queer lot and they keep forcefully using it on people and demanding that it be applied as a community requirement. to most of our knowledge, they are the only people who use the term outside of those contexts.

i love this whole angry christians vs. starbucks story that’s happening over the red cups because their entire protest is a trainwreck and a half like. so starbucks doesnt put any christmasy designs on their cups this year, they’re just red, and a couple christians decide that they’re “taking christ out of christmas” but the beautiful thing is they don’t boycott? im used to angry religious folks boycotting things like doritos and public bathrooms and target over the slightest association with Those Darn Liberals but this is an all new level

basically the non-boycotting group is actually encouraging people to go to their local starbucks, order a drink and then tell them their name is “merry christmas”, forcing Those Darn Liberals to associate christmas with their ambiguously festive cups. and its incredible cause ive seen so many facebook posts today from my relatives saying “i never get starbucks but im gonna get a drink every day this month and do this”

starbucks: gets more customers, more product exposure, more social media coverage

Mick Mulvaney barely got confirmed as Trump’s budget director. McCain voted against him.

  • Mulvaney is a co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative congressmen who have pushed to shut down the federal government instead of increase the federal debt. Do people not realize how close we are to becoming a down right scary isolated dictatorship?

Net Neutrality: only the rich will have access to the internet, thus limiting the information we can give or receive.  A conservative group owns local news stations, influencing what is being reported more and more each day.  Our supreme court is just one person away from being conservative ruled and RBG aint getting any younger. Our president is colluding with a foreign enemy and no one seems to give a shit, our voter rights are being taken away, the government is trying to force states to give them information about voters also resulting in people not registering or retracting their voting rights, the rich are getting richer and services are being cut to the poor, the police can kill without reproach, our police force is militarized, women’s bodies are not our own, women are being forced to carry to term against their will, rapists are going free, rapists hold high office in the government, rapists are running our country.  This shit sounds like a god damn dystopian novel and no one seems to be able to do anything about it.

I'm planning a trip from Alola to Kanto soon and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on helping my Mimikyu adjust to the change in scene/climate? Is there anything I can do to make the trip easier on him? Your blog is excellent, thank you so much for running it~ ^_^

I’m…really surprised you got the permits to bring your Mimikyu over to Kanto. A lot of people think Alola is strict with its foreign Pokémon policy, but Kanto has had a strict, non-Kanto Pokémon ban for decades. This isn’t just awkward for visitors, but frustrating for conservation groups. The laws prevent any non-native Pokémon from being brought to Kanto. This keeps groups from relocating Pokémon that are common in other regions (such as Eevee, Farfetch’d, and Dratini) to areas in Kanto, where the populations have suffered.

While it’s obvious that most Western radical feminists, the ones who base their ideology on outdated conceptualizations of gender and biological sex and who formulate their ideas based on second-wave feminism, are white, not all of them are white. (I’m not talking about women of color who were/are radical-identifying in the sense that they were/are socialists and anti-imperialists but rather feminists who integrate a “radical” analysis of gender into their feminism - the two are different, considering that the latter group does not necessarily identify with marxist/materialist feminism whereas the former group does). And as cis wlwoc, it’s our job to root out transmisogynistic wlwoc in our spaces. They do exist and pretending that only white wlw can be transmisogynistic is dangerous because it ignores that transmisogyny in our spaces and communities is just as virulent and just as violent. Of course more white women identify with transmisogynistic radical feminism, since transmisogynistic radical feminists have always aligned themselves with reactionary movements and ideologies including “pro-white” conservative groups (and white women are more likely to weaponize and victimize their identities and go for individualist rather than collective politics), but the point remains that there are also plenty of cis wlwoc who are transmisogynistic radical feminists (or transmisogynistic but may not identify as “radical” feminists).

We can never forget that trans women of color bear the brunt of multiple violences - transphobia, misogyny, and racism. We need to center trans women of color in our activism and actively combat transmisogyny in woc and wlwoc groups. Pretending that transmisogyny is a problem exclusive to white women or cishet liberal feminists is selfish and disingenuous. There is a difference between analyzing how all women of color are susceptible to gendered violence (for example, how slave owners and colonialists/imperialists masculinized women of color to enact brutality against them) regardless of whether they identify as cis or trans (and how this same phenomenon doesn’t typically apply to white women, regardless of how they identify), and falling in line with radfem/transmisogynistic ideologies as a way to explain or combat this phenomenon. Again, the gender binary, colonial and racial in its imposition, targets all women of color no matter how they identify (as in, cishet women of color ARE violently impacted by it contrary to popular opinion), and it’s definitely important to point that out to white LGBT people who think that it only impacts them, but this does not mean that you should turn to transmisogyny as a way to conceptualize this to yourself.

Let us all do better for the trans women of color in our communities!

Last stand: Nebraska farmers could derail Keystone XL pipeline
TransCanada has route approval in all of the U.S. states the line will cross except Nebraska, where the company says it has been unable to negotiate easements with landowners on about 9 percent of the 300-mile crossing.

When President Donald Trump handed TransCanada Pipeline Co. a permit for its Keystone XL pipeline last month, he said the company could now build the long-delayed and divisive project “with efficiency and with speed.”

But Trump and the firm will have to get through Nebraska farmer Art Tanderup first, along with about 90 other landowners in the path of the pipeline.

They are mostly farmers and ranchers, making a last stand against the pipeline - the fate of which now rests with an obscure state regulatory board, the Nebraska Public Service Commission.

The group is fine-tuning an economic argument it hopes will resonate better in this politically conservative state than the environmental concerns that dominated the successful push to block Keystone under former President Barack Obama.

Backed by conservation groups, the Nebraska opponents plan to cast the project as a threat to prime farming and grazing lands - vital to Nebraska’s economy - and a foreign company’s attempt to seize American private property.

They contend the pipeline will provide mainly temporary jobs that will vanish once construction ends, and limited tax revenues that will decline over time.
