Spirit Communication Tips

Since I just opened my spirit companion shop recently, I wanted to share some tips for you guys! These tips will generally help in connecting with unbound spirits, but can be useful in spirit communication with companions as well!

Things to keep in mind before doing any sort of spirit work:

  1. Believe in yourself, belief holds power
  2. Let go of doubt, stop worrying about accuracy
  3. Your intent holds incredible power, be aware of it
  4. Feel and sense first, analyse last
  5. Release all expectations of what will happen
  6. Release all tension and preconceived notions
  7. Balance your energy, empty your mind
  8. Research personality ties of colours/elements/etc
  9. Don’t rely on divination, especially not at first

As for the communication with a spirit:

  1. Find your intent for spirit communication. Attempt to picture it in your mind, try to perceive it the best way you can. It does not need to be anything specific, but what you think is what you invite, more or less. Understand well what you want to draw to you, and make sure you don’t let your mind wander while you are doing this. If you wish to communicate with a companion, picture them, their energy, and what you want out of the communication with them.
  2. You can also create a visual space in your mind to have your conversation in. This is more along the lines of astral travel, but you will receive the same sort of impressions, it just might appear more fluid. Typically this takes a lot more focus though and you’ll miss out on impressions outside of visual impressions. I don’t suggest this for communicating with a spirit that you are unfamiliar with.
  3. Associate your intent with something physical. If you want to communicate with a spirit that is emotionally forward, you will probably want a spirit of the water element. Having a cup or bowl of water will assist in drawing a spirit of that nature to you by giving them another medium. Be as creative as you wish with this, whatever physically expresses your desire for spirit communication will do. In the case of a spirit companion, this will suffice as an offering or a gift to them!
  4. Contact can come through in small pieces, or large chucks of information, and is often garbled and hard to process. Let the information come to you but don’t process it as it does. Also be patient! When just starting out you might only get the impression of a colour, or a feeling! Do not be discouraged.
  5. Spirit communication can happen by request, but it can also happen quite randomly. Always be aware that a spirit can communicate with you at any time, if for whatever reason they are drawn to the activity you are doing, or your energy.
  6. Some contact may seem insignificant, but don’t dismiss any impressions, even if they are simply of a certain colour or smell, they most always have a deeper meaning
  7. Contact may be visual, audible, or sensory, don’t dismiss the medium of communication either. It can be a combination of all of the above, or even just one of the above.
  8. Contact might not be triggered when you expect it to! Even a change in the weather, or a song on the radio can pave the path to having an impression or contact from a spirit. If you’re not seeing results, spice things up a bit, try a slightly different approach!
  9. Go with your first thought of belief, don’t second guess or question anything, not yet anyway. Feel and sense first.
  10. Pay attention to patterns and coincidence! Having a good understanding of mathematical probability will help you distinguish when a spirit is influencing your environment and when they are not. This is particularly useful during divination! I always know a spirit isn’t communicating with me, or is not at a good energy level to communicate because the results are random and don’t follow a pattern that makes sense. So I think it is important to keep an eye out for patterns and coincidence in your life, even though it is not directly obvious as communication, it is.
  11. Write it all down, don’t think about it just write down everything that comes to mind, scribble all the impressions that come to you no matter how much sense they make at the time. They’re all puzzle pieces to a puzzle that you’ll process later, might be months later. Do not dismiss anything as not spirit contact if that is the first thing that comes to mind. You do not need to confirm it, just write it down! If it becomes a pattern that is your confirmation.
  12. Hold off on divination until you have experienced impressions from a spirit, and have some understanding of their energy and a pattern of their behaviour. When starting to confirm your spirit communication with divination, ask questions you already know the answer to! It will take time to channel the spirit through a reading, so don’t ask hard questions until you see a pattern of accurate results. I wish it was as simple as just doing a reading with a spirit you don’t know, but it takes familiarity for an extremely accurate reading.
  13. Practice all of this often, even if you don’t get results, results and better accuracy come with time. It takes a considerable amount of energy to receive information from a spirit, which only comes with practice and becoming accustomed to doing so.

I hope this assists at least some of you in your spirit work and with your companions! Don’t forget that my ask box is always open, no matter how silly your question might seem!

Working with Plants

1. Start your own Herbal. There are some great books out there, but recording your own experiences/uses/collected lore for herbs is invaluable. Draw, press or take photos of the plants you include.

2. Learn about plants by seeing them with your own eyes. Visit botanical gardens, nurseries, garden centres and parks to see the plants in situ and (hopefully) correctly labelled. The human brain has an amazing memory for plants, it is a survival skill to be able to identify them. When you walk through a park or garden, notice the plants and identify those you know to re-establish this memory.

3. Grow things. Be as ambitious as your space, money and time allow. Collect plants that are hard to find, appeal to you and suit your climate. Go beyond culinary herbs. Be aware of where you plant things in the garden, both directionally and symbolically. Plants you have grown are constantly receiving offerings of your time, energy and resources and are therefore more likely to be willing to assist you.

4. Plants will die. Even the most experienced gardener will lose plants. Accept it. Don’t just buy a few seedlings and then decide you lack a green thumb because they all died. Some herbs are annuals, that means they only live for a season, some plants are deciduous, some will simply not be suited to your climate or area and fail to thrive. Be patient and persistent and become a student of gardening as well has herbcraft.

5. Work in depth with a particular herb or tree to discover its secrets. Read everything you can about it, research folklore and planetary correspondences, consume it raw, dried, as a tea and a tincture. Prepare a spagyric essence from it. Burn it as incense. Infuse oil with it. Grow it, talk to it, dream about it. Watch how it changes through the seasons, collect its seeds, smell its flowers. Do this until you know it inside out, and then begin again with another.

6. Substituting herbs is tricky business. No, you can not replace all flowers with lavender or all herbs with rosemary. That is lazy nonsense. Put some actual effort into getting the herbs you need for a spell, and if you genuinely can’t acquire them find something botanically related, energetically similar or at very least ruled by the same planet.

7. Treat herbs and trees as spirits, with respect and humility. Ask before your take, leave offerings, communicate, bond with them and you will be rewarded with gifts and wisdom and powerful ingredients for your spells.

8. Poisonous herbs and strong entheogens are for advanced practitioners. Don’t just start growing or using them because you want to be taken seriously. Some of these plants are tricksters, they can be very seductive. They are quite capable of controlling you. Be wary.

9. When harvesting for magical use, think not only what the plant is but where it is growing. A tree on a university campus will have different properties to the same kind found in a graveyard. A herb growing at the crossroads is different to one found by a stream.

10. Expand your learning and awareness beyond trees and herbs. Learn the lore of mosses, lichens, fungi and seaweeds. Parasitic and carnivorous plants. Get to know the plants that grow locally, even if they are far removed from those found in your books.

11. Check your sources when it comes to lore. If a book tells you lavender is good for love spells, question it. Try to discover where the information came from, look up the older herbals, read books of plant folklore, investigate planetary and elemental correspondences based on the nature and virtues of the plant, not just what Cunningham says.

12. Develop relationships not only with individual trees and herbs, but with particular species. Plants can be spirit guides in the way that animals can. There is an oak tree, and then there is Oak. They can teach, guide and protect. Having a handful of plant allies you know intimately and fashioning your tools from their wood, planting them around your house and visiting them in the wild will make your connection to those spirits all the stronger.

                                                  How to Open the Veil

The Veil is what separates our physical realm from the spirit world. By opening it, we’re able to communicate more freely with spirits. Essentially, you’ll be making a door and opening it in order to reach the spirit realm.

Disclaimer: I’m not an expert at this, please don’t take my word as the final say. I just started practicing this technique and was taught by a close friend. Always be safe when you practice because if you’re not careful, you can get into some shit. I’m writing this post by popular demand.

STEP 1: BE SAFE. The picture above is a little preview of the layout I used in my own dorm room. It’s hard to see, but I first drew a chalk circle and sprinkled black salt all along the edges of said circle. I also put four crystals at each end to mark it. Why do I have so much shit everywhere?? Because I don’t want anything to come through the door I created and cause problems. This circle keeps unwanted spirits out. (Granted, you don’t have to use as many things as I did. I find that a physical circle is just easier to visualize.) You can also use candles or anything else that works for you!

STEP 2: MARK THE DOOR. I used sun and moon candle holders with electric candles in them (since I live in a dorm and can’t use real candles). I set them apart from each other, like I was making, well, a door. Then I used some Super-Moon water to draw a line between the two candle holders to amplify my energy. Finally, I also sprinkled a line of black salt to stop unwanted and harmful spirits from coming through the door.

STEP 3: RELAX. Get into the state of mind you need to be in to do witchy stuff. Meditation, grounding, singing–whatever you need to do to access your energy.

STEP 4: STRETCH YOUR ENERGY. Whenever you feel ready, slowly pool energy into you palms. Then push it through the marked entrance where your door is going to be, imagining it as a thread, string, or cord connecting to the spirit realm. This might be difficult, especially if the veil isn’t exactly thin where you’re at. You may feel your energy bounce back, or that you’re hitting a wall. If you do, don’t worry! You can always pull back, gather your energy, and try again.

STEP 5: CREATE A BRIDGE. You’ll know the moment when your energy connects to the spirit realm. It feels different for every person–for me, it’s almost like this tug in my gut and the feeling of a thread connecting my hands and body to something else. Once you feel that, it’s really up to you on how you want to create the bridge! For me, what works best is when I imagine myself walking across the thread of my energy towards the spirit realm. As I walk, my energy begins to create the bridge. There might be another door on the other side once you cross the bridge (it’s really up to how you visualize). If there is, open it.

STEP 6: OPEN THE DOOR. Once you’ve made the bridge, feel and hold on to that connection. Then, imagine a door leading to the bridge through the physical boundaries you created earlier. This door can look however you like–whatever’s easiest for you to imagine! Then, use your energy to pry open the door. After that…

Congrats! You’ve successfully opened a door to the spirit realm! You should be able to feel the difference in energies. It’s kind of hard to explain how it feels–almost like this vast, empty expanse and the chattering of lots of different spirits floating around.

When you’re done…

CLOSE THE DOOR. If you invited any spirits in to chat, say goodbye to the spirit(s) that you communicated with and ask them to leave. Make sure they leave before you close the door. If they refuse to, you might have to force them via your own energy (obviously, this is in the worst of situations. Try not to be rude if possible!). We’ve had to do this before and it’s not the most pleasant thing (haha).

To close the door, pull your energy out from the spirit realm. Imagine that bridge you created crumbling, until you can no longer feel that connection. Once you’re out, close the door, seal it up, and do anything else that feels necessary in order to break the opening. For me, I usually make a breaking motion with my hands to signify the cut-off connection. You can chant or say an incantation if you like as well. This is important, because you definitely don’t want to leave a door open for spirit to come through willy nilly!

                                                          Other Info

  • PLEASE BE CAREFUL!! If you’re not cautious, some bad spirits might be able to get through and that’s never fun. If possible, try this first with someone else (preferably someone who knows more of what they’re doing). If you can’t, make sure you have multiple backups, wards, and other witchy things to keep bad spirits at bay.
  • If you want to invite a spirit to chat, it’s probably a good idea to have an offering around, just to be polite. Tarot cards, pendulums, etc. are pretty awesome tools to use if you’re not great at telepathic communication!
  • Take everything spirits say with a grain of salt. They can lie just like people.

I hope this was helpful to those that asked! If anyone wants to add anything, feel free to. I’m by no means an expert, so if someone wants to add their expertise advise please do! If something doesn’t feel right, go with your gut–never do something you’re not comfortable with.

Be safe, fellow spirit workers and witches!

A healer’s guide to the Aura

As a healer, I regularly work with the aura to heal the pains of others. The aura reveals information about areas of the body that are holding physical, emotional and spiritual pains, and being able to see this allows a healer to work on removing this negative energy. There are seven layers of the aura, and each layer reveals information about energy that has attached to the body.

Aura is referred to in many spiritual and religious traditions, from a halo around the head of Christ or the Buddha, the rainbow body discussed in Dzogchen, to the parts of the soul discussed in ancient Egyptian beliefs.

Some people can see the aura with their physical eyes in the same way that they might see someone wearing a red shirt. This is rare, and there are people who tell you that you can see the aura by screwing up your eyes and looking at someone like you need a pair of sunglasses. This kinda works, but when someone can see an aura physically, they don’t need to screw their eyes up and look at people funny. Most people see the aura in their third eye or in their “mind’s eye,” or physically sense the color of the aura. This is where they see in their mind and not physically with their eyes. Some may not even see any color at all but sense something wrong in the aura and what that is connected to.
The aura also constantly changes colors as a result of spiritual influences, emotions, the physical body’s processes, etc. The aura is not one color for life as a lot of people seem to believe, and you don’t upgrade your aura color in the same way as a karate belt. It’s just flowing and changing constantly and may reflect a mix of multiple colors and energies.

Aura levels
There are seven layers in the aura and each reveals information about someone. These can be looked at to glean information on what needs to be healed. Accurately reading these layers can assist someone to fully recover from any condition.
Etheric body: The etheric body extends 12cm from the physical body, and contains an imprint on the health of the physical body and the senses. It is connected to the root chakra. (Muladhara)
Emotional body: The emotional body is connected to emotions of the self, potential and motivation. It is affected by suppressed emotions, rage, anger, depression etc. It is connected to the sacral chakra. (Svadisthana)
Mental body: The mental body reflects a map of mental illnesses and pain, and when it is balanced it will keep the rational mind and the intuitive mind cooperating. It is connected to the solar plexus chakra. (Manipura)
Astral body: The astral body holds an imprint of the heart. Relationship pains with family, friends and partners are held here, as well as any hurts relating to discrimination and negative beliefs that have been used against someone. This is the body that travels to the astral and allows us to connect with spirits. It is connected to the heart chakra. (Anahata)
Etheric template: The etheric template will hold pain related to the expression of the self, and how we relate to the world around us. Balance here helps us to find our place through speech, creativity, expression etc. It is connected to the throat chakra. (Vissudha)
Celestial body: The celestial body is connected to the intuition, the spiritual realms and divine love. This is where evidence of spiritual attack can be seen the most. It is connected to the third eye chakra. (Ajna)
Ketheric template: The ketheric template is a protective force that surrounds the aura layers, that is strongly connected to universal love. It restricts incoming energies and if it is blocked or out of balance it will be unable to block spiritual attack. It is connected to the crown chakra. (Sahasrara)

Aura blockages
Aura blockages result due to negative energies that have attached to the body. These can come about due to almost anything, from physical illness, racial discrimination, holding hate in the heart, emotions, or even just listening to a friend talk about their back pain (and then you take on the pain yourself). Healers often talk about meeting people whom have pain in the exact same spot that a friend carried pain. In my own healing journey I’ve experienced blockages due to someone mistreating part of my body, to blockages in the throat chakra and etheric template that came about due to screaming or talking out of anger. So blockages can come from almost anywhere, and you’d be surprised what your body can carry around that you hadn’t even thought about.

Aura Colours
The Aura can be multiple colours in each of its layers one colour, or the colours can hang around a particular spot on the body. Really there is no limit in the potential for variation here. The list below is some of the basic interpretations of the basic colours. There is always potential for variation in the colours as well or potential for unusual colours that may not be listed below.
Red: Related to the physical body, and the more dense the colour is, the more intense the worries and fears that are collected and carried in the body, and the more damage to the DNA from emotional and spiritual attachments. it is connected to survival and the instinct.
Pink: Loving, tender and compassionate nature. Can indicate clairaudience. When this colour is dark or muddied it indicates evidence of negativity being carried due to dishonesty or immaturity. Often the colour found around a pet when nearby their human.
Orange: Emotions, vitality, creativity. Muddied colour indicates disturbances in self understanding.
Yellow: Life and spleen energy. Colour of awakening and inspiration. Intelligence and playfulness. Muddied colour indicates struggling to maintain control, fatigue and stress. Taking on too much at once mentally.
Green: Related to heart energy. Indicates growth and balance, a healer and love centred person. Often the colour of a pet’s aura when around their human alongside pink or yellow. Muddy green indicates jealousy, resentment and playing the victim.
Blue: Cool and calm, the colour of beginning spiritual awareness. Related to the throat chakra. Peacefulness, clairvoyance and spiritual energy. Muddied colour indicates a fear of the future and unwillingness to face the truth.
Purple: Purple is the colour associated with the pituitary gland or spirituality. Visions of the highest level, someone connect with spiritual love.
Grey: A blockage
Black: A negative aura, sucks energy into it. Indicates spiritual attachments to past life hurts, entity attachment, spiritual attack, etc.

In-depth psychic communication guide for spirit contact

This guide is for adults only.

I am an animist so I believe nearly everything has a spirit. Your house has a spirit; so do your pets, and your plants. The well-used family pots and pans have spirits, as do your lucky jeans. Communicating with inanimate objects is known as psychometry (psychometry is specifically touching something to gain information about it). But I see no problem with expanding that word to mean communication with all inanimate objects. In this guide, ‘inanimate’ means something organically dead, even if it has a living spirit.

This guide is about “psychic” communication, which means without tools. The communication will exist in your mind. In my opinion this is a very good form of communication for any magic-worker to develop, for a couple reasons.

  • It will improve your psychic abilities in general
  • You will no longer need to carry tools with you; you may communicate with any spirit, anywhere, any time
  • It will improve your magical focus
  • You can experience spirits in a more undiluted form
  • It’s really, really cool

First, let me explain fully what I mean when I say this communication will exist “within your mind”.

We all know of people who see and hear spirits as if the spirits were three-dimensional, flesh-and-blood beings. This is rare. You shouldn’t be particularly jealous of these people, either. I’ve never met a person (so far) who was happy about having these gifts. As someone who occasionally sees things with their two-eyes, it is a scary and intimidating experience.

For the majority of us magical normies, we are going to experience spirits within the platform of our imagination.

This may be disappointing to you. Who wants to feel as if they are just 'imagining’ spirits? Yet our imagination is the platform for all magic. Beings who cannot imagine another reality cannot create that other reality. Our imagination is an incredible magical power, giving us the ability to connect with other realities. Get over the idea that what you imagine is just “in your mind.” It is not.

It is also uncommon for a person to hear, see, or imagine actual words in their own spoken language. Spirits are much more likely to communicate empathetically, by giving us feelings, thoughts, or emotions. They may also use gestures and actions, which we will see when we view them in our minds. This may sound very obscure, but it is not. It is very easy to tell when a spirit is happy or angry, wants to leave, wants to stay, or wants you to follow them. Even the appearance of the spirit itself will communicate something to you. How do they present themselves? Do you believe the form they take?

This guide is going to be primarily written for communicating with inanimate or organic spirits, but the same concepts may be applied to working with non-physical spirits.

Other Notes

It is pretty important that you get to know yourself. If you are serious about spirit work, it is vital that you know yourself. This means that you are able to understand where your thoughts come from, and identify if a thought is or is not yours. For example, I was doing an important spell yesterday. I suddenly got quite a bad feeling. However, I was able to identify that it was a spirit within my circle giving me a warning, instead of an internal anxiety. If I had not known this, I may have shut this important spell down totally instead of identifying the warning for what it was.

Get relatively good at clearing your mind. Do this through meditation. Strive to achieve a state of clear-mindnedness for a few seconds at a time, on command.

This method may be safer than communicating with unknown spirits you call through the aether.

After you psychically connect with a spirit, you may continue getting information from that spirit for some time.

Marijuana can vastly help this process along. If you don’t prefer that mental high, try another psychic plant instead. Make tea or smoke the herbs.

Getting Started with the Bump

Find something you just know has a spirit. I would really recommend a plant. It could be a houseplant or a tree or anything. If you are absolutely of the mind that an inanimate object has a spirit, get in touch with that instead. Right now avoid animals and humans. They are a little more difficult to read, and your mental probing could bother Fido. For this exercise I will assume we are using a plant.

Regard the plant casually, and bump your mind against it. When I say “bump” your mind, I just mean to consider the plant intensely for a few moments, then let your focus fade. Do you get any feelings? Any sensations? Do you have any memories that come to you? All these things are good. The feelings may be quite obvious; when I “bump” my Apricot tree, I experience the memory of how apricots taste.

Try “bumping” things often and see if you get any response. If your mind is totally blank, no worries; the “bump” will come with time. Or, perhaps you have your own unique way of interacting with spirits! Experiment and see what works for you. There is also a chance that whatever you are trying to bump has no spirit, such as an inanimate object you wrongly identified as being inspirited.

If you do happen to have any experiences when you bump the plant, remember them for your upcoming communication. Suppose you have bad, good, or neutral experiences; all these will tell you the current state or mood of the plant. When I bump the Redwood trees in my yard, typically they make me think of healthy, strong, powerful plants. Today when I bumped them, I was reminded of the oracle card Struggle and I felt like they were warriors losing a battle (the drought here is killing most of our evergreens). I also got a strained emotional feeling. These feelings give me an accurate picture of the state of the Redwood trees.

Try finding three different objects right now and bumping them. See what happens! It is quite alright if you feel you are just having normal memories; spirit communication is in fact quite normal in many ways.

The “bump” is a good way to start and practice spirit communication.

The bump works because all humans are natural spirit-workers to some degree. When you focus on something, you are contacting it’s spirit. You just have to pay attention to what comes to you, and recognize it for what it is: real communication. If the bump simply is not working for you, try using tools to help. Meditate with psychic stones, burn a little psychic incense, or create a ring that you look through which opens up a portal of access.

Going further; back-and-forth communication

Once you have the bump down, continue on to the next step (if the bump isn’t working for you after a couple days of attempts, move on anyways. It will not hurt).

When you bump the plant, you are receiving active communication from it, even if this communication is in the form of memories. Try bumping a plant, then while you are having your bump-experiences, ask it a question that will cause your perceptions to change. For example, do not ask, “how are you doing?” because you are already finding out how they are doing with the bump. Vocally or mentally, try asking one of the following example questions.

  • What do you need?
  • How do you like the cat? (or any influencing factor in their lives)
  • How old are you?
  • What do you think of water?
  • Do you want some plant food?
  • Do you like this spot you are at?
  • What is your favorite thing?

In general, it is polite to avoid asking questions which would upset the plant. “Do you want to be chopped up in to little pieces and eaten” is not an appropriate question to a plant, just as it would not be appropriate to another human.

After you ask the question, allow your mind to unfocus and see what comes to you. When I ask most of my trees about water, I see dried deserts. This is a clear sign that they are parched; unfortunately there is not a lot I can do. Just now I asked a house plant about water and it showed me a swampy marsh with vibrant green foliage. It is well-watered.

Sometimes, especially with trees, you may see a human figure in your imagination. This is quite normal. Carefully try to remember how the spirit of that plant looks to you. If you are interested in this, try researching tree lore for your culture. The plant spirits should express the lore of the tree.

It is your job to interpret the images and feelings you get in to communication. This may be difficult at the start, but you will get the hang of it. For example I just asked that same houseplant if it would like any food. It showed me a flat surface with an indent in it about three inches deep. I interpret this to mean the plant would like more food – because it showed me a hole that needed to be filled.

On that note, asking other spirit-workers to help you interpret your visions may or may not work. Your brain is interpreting the spirit-signals given to you, and therefore it is uniquely and intimately personal to you. I have seen very fascinating and thought-inducing discussions when people ask others to help interpret their communications, but typically, all the ideas are wildly different. One person may see the marsh and assume the plant has had too much water. Another person will say, “your plant doesn’t care about water, it wants to be planted in the wild.” It is ultimately up to you to interpret what is going on.

After you have spoken to the plant and received a response, try touching the plant gently and see what comes to you. Or, try moving it in to the sun or shade and see what the plant thinks.

Animals and humans

Contacting animal spirits works much in the same way as plant spirits. I have noticed that the spirit of the human or animal will respond, even if they consciously do not seem to be aware of it at all.

Just now I “asked” my dog three questions: “How are you feeling? Are you hungry? Are you thirsty?” I received first feelings of boredom and hyperactivity, then feelings of satiation, then a vivid aqua blue color which I interpreted to mean, “I have had lots of water recently.” Yet my dog did not stop to look at me, or act as if something was intruding upon her spirit. She kept playing as usual. Just now I had to discipline her for jumping on the table, and now she feels sad.

One pretty neat thing about bumping humans is that you can get really strange responses. Humans are unlike any other creature we know; we can be closed off. We can open up. We can cast spells. Get a group of magic-worker friends. Bump each other and share what you find. You may be bumping up against a person’s shields or personal spells!

Practical communication

Communicate with your magical objects to determine their effects and charge. Communicate with anything to see if it is dangerous, if you need to avoid it, or if it is okay to approach. Communicate with curious objects at thrift stores to find out its history. Communicate with your plants to see how they are doing and make sure they have what they need.

Learn to communicate with abstract concepts and natural phenomena. Communicate with your house, the land, and the weather. Communicate with the spirit of wealth and prosperity in your home. Give it offerings. Make friends with it.

When something is wrong with a loved one, an object, or a spell, communicate with it first to see what is wrong. Then take the appropriate steps to help remedy the situation.

Final note

This technique is obviously not going to work for 100% of all people. There are just too many confounding variables. Some people have really huge and heavy blockages that prevent them from psychic communication, often built themselves after scary experiences. If this technique does not seem to work at all for you, send me a message and we will troubleshoot.

I am… so sick of hearing things like “Witchcraft is about harmony with nature and connecting with the spirit of the earth!” That may be YOUR craft, but it is not MY craft.

Witchcraft is like art – everyone does it in their own way, using the tools they feel most comfortable with and they all have their own, unique, reasons for doing the thing. No two people have the exact same reasons or feelings about the Craft.

My craft is about regaining the power that years of abuse has taken from me, about building up defenses for those I love and tearing down those that would do my harm. My craft is largely aggressively defensive and has very, VERY little to do with being “in harmony” with anything but my own innate power.

Stop trying to tell others what the purpose/point of Witchcraft is because I assure you: it’s different for everyone and you are NOT the grand arbiter of what witchcraft is.

*points at the size difference between “Fade Touched” and normal creatures*
*points at ancient elves being taller than present day elves*
*points at corypheus and the architect being really tall*
*points at how big witherfang was compared to other wolves*
*points at the avaar being tall and also having a strong connection to spirits in their culture*
*tentatively points at the qunari saarebas and how they are tall AND have stronger magic than other races*

the Fade obviously provides some kind of energy/nutrient/atmospheric condition necessary for people and creatures to be large and powerful

it seems that everything has probably been on a decline in terms of size since the formation of the veil. So maybe Corypheus and co. really were super tall because i wasn’t aware that a side effect of a human being corrupted by the blight was a rapid growth spurt but everyone has gotten shorter as time has gone on? in any case a strong connection to or contact with the Fade seems to indicate an increase in size.

I’m not entirely certain how to connect all of these so any additional thoughts would be appreciated!

I do know one thing though:

If Solas succeeds in tearing down the veil we’re going to have to fight even bigger spiders and I’m not here for that

Getting to know the spirits of place

A few days ago I wrote about how the life of everything sings together to make the spirit of a place. As a druid and animist, I like to learn as much as I can about the place and the beings that give it its special spirit.

There are two kinds of knowledge. One is the kind that you can find in books and on the internet. The second is the knowledge in your bones, the knowing you arrive at by using all of your senses.

I like to combine both of these kinds of knowledge to make closer connections to the spirits that surround me.

Try this experiment.

Pick a being that lives near you. It can be a tree, a plant, or a rock – it’s good to start with something that won’t run away. Sit with it for a while, opening all your senses to it. (Only use your sense of taste if you are absolutely certain it’s not poisonous!) See what you can learn by just sharing space with this being.

Then go home and look the plant or stone up in a book or on the web. Look for its characteristics and its uses. To what extent does your intuition agree with what’s in the book?

When I try this, I am invariably surprised about how much I can learn from just being with a natural thing. It would seem that humans are quite capable of using their intuition for all kinds of things.

Why don’t you have a go and see for yourself?

Things to Ask a Diviner When You Don’t Know What to Ask

So let’s say that you’ve found a diviner that you really like, and you want to get a reading from them, and you don’t know what to ask. Or, let’s say you do your own divination, and you want to ask your cards/runes/other divinatory tool something besides the general reading - some specific information that will help you, but you just can’t figure out how to ask.

Here is that list!

(P.S., This post was the idea of @resonance-of-libra. I’m just the one who made it.)

  • Is there anything I would benefit from knowing that I have not asked about?
  • How will tomorrow be for me?
  • Are any spiritual entities trying to contact me? Who? What are they trying to say?
  • Is there anything I’m forgetting?
  • What does my subconscious want to say to me that I’ve ignored?
  • What do I need to focus on in life right now?
  • What is my pet thinking about?
  • What should I draw/write about?

  • How can I move forward in my career/love life/education?
  • What can I do to evolve as a spirit?
  • What is the strongest foundation I have to build on when it comes to my career/love life/future/education/health?
  • What am I not considering in this big decision of mine?
