conjoined skull

“ Witchfire is a sculptural interpretation of the Old Craft symbol of the flame above the (antlered) skull.  Elder and man-in-black  Steven Posch writes of Continental Witchcraft trials in which French witches stated that the “Devil”– the Horned God of the Witches– “appeared at the sabbat in the form of a He-Goat with a candle burning between his horns… The witches would then light their own tapers or torches (as we still do) from the god’s fire: the Lord of the Sabbat giving illumination to his people. The witchfire is the power of life that burns in each of us.” To me, this symbol depicts Spirit or Consciousness crowning the (human) animal.  The flame or light symbolizes illumination, gnosis, inner wisdom, self-awareness, cognition, inspiration, the indwelling presence of the divine or the sacred. Candle flame, conjoined with the skull of a beast, connects what is elemental with what is animal. It is also one of the few symbols of humanity not incorporating a literal image of a human.”
