I hate it when you really love a song and it’s your safe place when everything is going wrong in your life & then one day something bad happens to it, like if a person you dislike sang it or it was played on the trailer of a crappy film and suddenly you associate the song with a crappy thing and you’re forced to think of that whenever you listen to your song and that ruins EVERYTHINF AND THERES NO MORE SAFE PLACE TO ESCAPE TO WHEN EVERYTHING IS FALLING APART

Taehyung Scenario: Under the Stars.

For you he was like a star, always so bright; for him you were a little bit more than that.

Genre: Fluff / Romance.

You and Taehyung were on the roof of your house, it was a plain roof so you could lay there and be completely safe; everything was quiet around, just the two of you lying on that roof with a blanket to cover up from the cold winds.
-Are you watching your friends up there? - You asked when he didn’t speak for a while. At this Taehyung hummed and grinned a little.
-Do you think I’m an alien? -
You got a bit more confortable by his side, cuddled more in his arms. –You’re my alien-
At that statement Taehyung smiled and kissed your cheek. He was pensive today, but not like something was bothering him, it was more like when you are looking for a perfect word to describe something but you just can’t find it, you keep thinking about it until you find it.
-I really like the stars- he stated gazing at the night sky, in the middle of all that darkness with the city asleep the stars seemed to shine more than ever. You could understand the feeling.
-Me too-
Taehyung took your hands together and lifted them so your intertwined fingers blocked part of your view. –You are a star though- you said, remembering he’s an idol and is considered a star by a lot of people, including you.
He turned his eyes to you, and you did the same to his, Taehyung was so handsome from afar and in TV, seeing him up close like this made you dizzy, even if you were his girlfriend for a long time now. –Jagi is the real star- He kissed your nose this time and his arms moved to your sides as he started to tickle you a little, you didn’t last long until you were laughing and trying to scape his grasp.

You were panting by the time he finally calmed down, watching the sky again in a relaxed position, so close you were practically on top of him.
-I used to study the names of the starts and constellations and everything-
You were amazed by his sudden confession, he’d never mentioned that before. –That’s really interesting, you could like, orient yourself just watching them?-
He nodded and his hand went to the sky again. –You see those three stars?-
-Yes, but I know those! That is the Orion Belt!- you said proud of your limited knowledge in astronomy.
Taehyung gave a hum of approval. –Yes, but that’s not what I want to show you-
-What is it then? -
-Turn your head a bit to the left- He instructed pointing at something in the sky, but you couldn’t see it. –Not like that, I’ll help you-
He got up a little so he could help you find that star he wanted to show you; his hands were on the sides on your face and carefully he placed you face just in the right angle for you to see it. –Can you see that super bright star now? -
You squinted your eyes, and it passed a few seconds until you found it. –I got it! I see it!- you squealed in victory.
-That’s Sirius, the brightest star in the sky-
You were amazed by it, the star was notably bigger and shined much more than the others around, you felt blind for not spotting it sooner, Taehyung could do this so easily, he really liked the stars. –I don’t know how I didn’t see it before, it’s huge-
-It is, and the constellation name is kind of funny, Canis Major-
-Like a dog?-
Taehyung woofed in response and you laughed. How could someone be so serious and silly at the same time? –Do you know the name of all the constellations? -
He thought for a bit before answering. –I know a lot, but not all of them, I want a telescope, so I can discover my own-
You giggled, imagining him with a telescope in the hunt for new stars. –Constellation Kim Taehyung, or Constellation V! I think that last one would be perfect, what do you think?-
He didn’t say anything and then you realized that his eyes were no longer in the sky, he was looking at you so intently and yet so loving that you felt mesmerized. Your heart was running races in your chest, waiting to see what he would do because you knew something was going to happen. -If I could name a constellation it would be after you-
All your body shivered, your cheeks burned and your heart wanted to run out of you from excitement. –Taehyung- you could only say his name, not knowing what to say besides the enormous love you felt for this boy. –I love you-
-I love you too- and in the roof under the night sky, Taehyung kissed the girl who he would name constellations for.

Teen Wolf Imagine - girl stuff

Stiles finally got out of the hospital a couple of days after his scare. You all decided to surprise him and give him a awesome welcome home day. You bought his favorite treats, got his favorite movies, cooked for him and baked him a cake. His bed was full of pillows to make him confortable too. You were all so happy and relieved he was ok and all you wanted was for him to have fun and forget the problems for the moment.

You were all waiting in the front door when sherriff Stilinski arrived with Stiles. He was so distracted he didn’t even notice you until he got out of the car. He looked up and was surprised.

“Guys wh - what are y - what are you doing here?” The look in his face was adorable.

“Surprise!” Lydia smiled.

“Welcome back home buddy.” Scott added.

“We missed you!” Mason said, hitting him in his arm.

“Please dont scare us again, ok?” Malia added. Stiles was so surprised that he barely moved for a few seconds. After that he gave everyone a hug, thanking each and everybody for the love.

You spent most of the afternoon watching Star Wars and it was, by far, the best thing you decided to do together. Although you weren’t enjoying the movie as much as Stiles you made him happy. He was so excited and he could barely stop talking and moving and that entertained you all. And you couldn’t help but admire him and melt everytime he smiled. You love him. You don’t want to, because of your hate for relationships, but you do. And now there was no hiding possible since you told Stiles too. But Malia still likes him too. And it was all too much for your head and heart. Kira and Lydia noticed something was wrong so they interrupted your thoughts to get you out of there.

“Ugh I need to go to the bathroom.” Lydia said, getting up.

“Yeah me too, I’ll go with you. Aria could you come please? I need your help.” Kira said looking at you with a funny expression while you tried to figure out what she meant. “Girl stuff.” Both Kira and Lydia’s eyes widened.

“Sure. Wanna come Malia?” You asked.

“No thanks. I am hungry though. I’m going to the kitchen.”

“Girls c'mon you’re making us miss the best parts!” Stiles cried out waving his hands around. The rest pf the guys laughed making Stiles more annoyed.

“We’ll be right back!”

When you got the bathroom Kira made surr the door was really closed and no one was near.

“So how is your relationship with Stiles going?” God, Lydia was direct. You felt a nervous tingle inside you and tried to shake it off.

“What? We’re just friends.”

“Just friends don’t stare at each other the way you guys do.” Kira added.

“Neither do they kiss or react the way you guys do.” Lydia exclaimed.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You don’t fool us! It’s so obvious. Stiles is crazy about you. And you’re crazy about him too!”

You couldn’t deny it anymore. They already knew.

“Ok yes I am but I don’t want to be. I hate relationships. They suck!”

“Hey!” Kira gave you a look.

“Oh not yours of course, I’m sorry.” You gave her a hug.

“Not all relationships suck Aria, what makes you think that?” Lydia crossed her arms waiting for your response.

“I’ve seen my parents’s marriage. It was horrible. I saw my mom suffer so much! And I’ve seen girls I know hurt too. I don’t want to go through that. I don’t want to suffer anymore.” Your eyes were filled up with tears and you looked down, unable to look at them.

“Sweetie you will always suffer in life.”

“Wow Lydia thanks.”

“But it make you grow, it will help you learn. It will make you stronger. And, like I said, not all relationships suck. Don’t look at them like that!”

“Aria not all relationships are like your parents’s marriage. And just because they had one like that doesn’t mean you will too.” Kira said while she played with your hair. You kept looking down, trying not to cry and playing nervously with your hands. Lydia got closer to you and grabbed your hand.

“Look at me.” You did. “Relationships aren’t easy. And yes they can suck. But they can also be amazing. And we know Stiles. He will be an amazing boyfriend and he’s worth it.”

“But what if I mess up or ruin everything? Or he decides he wants Malia and I was just a moment thing?”

“That won’t happen.” Kira said, not only trying to reassure you, but also being honest with you.

“And even if it does c'mon! You’re Aria Hale! You will get over it fabulous as always of course!” The three of you started laughing. You were starting to feel better and less anxious about it. Maybe they were right.

“Thank you girls.” You hugged them tight. They smiled back at you. “Now let’s go before Stiles has a minor attack.”

Building Our World

And now I’m flying by myself, writing to myself. That’s…that’s chaos.

OK, I lied. I’m flying with three-hundred other people. I’m sitting in an assigned seat; hardly chaotic. But I am (once again) writing an article far above the surface of our planet. So let’s talk about Magic.

At its core, Magic is an environmental game. Each year we are transported to two worlds, some old and some new, that populate 2” card frames with images of sprawling landscapes, bizarre creatures, and impactful events. In its own way, the experience of a trading card game is its own style of literature.

At its core, however, literature isn’t about far-off worlds and mythical heroes and villains. Literature, as a product of our psyches, is about us. Our world. Our heroes and villains. Humans have a knack for inserting themselves into everything around them. Fiction is just their way of inserting humanity into the imaginary.

Today’s article will be a look at how Magic’s world building binds us to the familiar, foreign, and fantastic parts of our own world. Through the imaginary worlds we visit, our own world is revealed.

It’s All Greek to Me

Wrath of God by Willian Murai

Greek mythology is the gateway drug of ancient studies. If you’re interested in old religions, there’s a good chance Greek mythology helped spur that interest. Even if you weren’t familiar with Greek mythology before the Theros block, there’s probably a block that contained some part of some culture that you already knew fairly well.

This is the first way world building connects with reality: the familiar worlds that many people can easily grok. Theros is a simple plane to digest. Fickle gods unleash their petty wrath upon a world populated by horrible monsters and flawed heroes. Familiar tropes abound: battle-forged soldiers, ferocious minotaurs, and the hubris of heroism. Theros may be Greek to me, but I already knew Greek mythology fairly well.

What world building value is there to these kinds of planes? If the audience is largely in the know about a place, why force them to explore it?

There is great power in the familiar. Eons of evolution has programmed us to be comforted by things that we recognize. Theros provides a world that players familiar with Greek mythology can easily digest. They know that the hero faction will be about small humans growing to heroic sizes. The monsters will be quite monstrous indeed. Familiar planes provide familiar tropes to inspire mechanics.

But adaptations aren’t always so clean and straightforward. Tropes can be subverted. Part of the fun of familiarity is finding the congruencies. Theros block provides a fantastic example of this with its pantheon of fifteen gods. The gods are one of the most compelling parts of Greek mythology, so finding the ways they were translated into Magic was a treat. Those translations aren’t always so tidy. Heliod, after all, isn’t just a Zeus analogue. He borrows the “king of the gods” role, but many of his powers are borrowed from Apollo.

Familiar planes are less about exploring new ideas and more about reexamining old ideas and new contexts. The comfort of familiar content already predisposes your brain for enjoyment. All you have to do is walk the path of rediscovery.

Prussian Ethics

Civilized Scholar by Michael C. Hayes

This is perhaps the most obvious aspect of world building. Planes inspired by real-world culture can help introduce players to novel ideas and inspirations. A little bit of curiosity goes a long way here, as a casual appreciation of the plane of Innistrad leads down a rabbit hole of Prussian culture.

For example, the people of Thraben sure are fond of fitted waistcoats and pants. For the most part, cathars and scholars alike are depicted with this clean style of dress. Why? The first step is that military uniforms have always inspired fashion. Warriors are valued in nearly every culture, and thus their people emulate warrior dress to feel connected to the aspirations of the warrior (bravery, loyalty, honor, and so on). If you’ve ever worn a leather bomber jacket, you have participated in this practice.

The Kingdom of Prussia had one of the most disciplined and professional armies in Europe at the time. A large part of that was their standardized uniforms made from fitted clothing. Function was paramount to the Prussians, and the military influences could be seen all across Victorian fashion. The tight waistcoats, belts, and hats we see across Innistrad are rooted in such designs. Clean, professional, functional Prussian values echo into a fantasy world for us to appreciate.

In this way, world building provides a thousand gateways of opportunity for education. A player’s curiosity is left to wander on its own, investigating the facets of culture that pique their interest. Enjoy the Temur? Go read about Siberian shamanism. Confused about Kamigawa? Delve into the Shinto religion and the kami that populate its worldview.

That isn’t to say that these fictional worlds are the end-all-be-all of the cultures that inspire them. Tropes don’t always accurately reflect reality. As with any educational endeavor, hubris looms for those that consider themselves experts without doing their homework. This is why I likened planes to gates and opportunities for education; the player still has to do outside work.

Maybe it’s also helpful to think of planes as advertisements for the cultures they represent. Visiting Innistrad isn’t visiting the Kingdom of Prussia, but it gives you a good idea of what to expect if you research Prussia further. You’ll find the roles of the church, the attitudes of the wealthy, and the life of a woodsman are more complex than one fantasy world can encapsulate. The fiction gives you a jumping off point, but the reality behind it is far more wondrous.

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle by Kieran Yanner

Experience is weird. Phenomenology is the philosophical school that talks about lived experiences, and trying to read the basic writings of the school is quite a task. How do you use words to get another person to understand what your own personal, subjective experience was like?

Communication is seemingly impossible, but humans make it work the best they can.

Building a fictional world fights this same battle. How do you, the world builder, convey the danger of Zendikar to a player? You have art, names, flavor text, and game mechanics at your disposal. Solving this problem is essentially the core of game design itself.

Successful world building may not be aiming to convey raw information about a culture, but instead offer an analogous experience to something in our world. Take a moment and thing about the most impressive landscape you ever saw. Not in pictures or movies, but in real life. A real place that you stood. Got it?

Now think about how less impressive a film of that location would be. Then think about how less impressive a postcard picture of that location would be. Then think about how less impressive a written story about that place would be.

Therein lies the problem with experiences: we can’t really share them! Instead, think about what that experience was. Maybe you were in awe of the massive power of an erupting volcano (It’s pretty cool and I highly recommend watching it happen sometime in your life.)

When building a world like Zendikar, you can’t really convey a specific experience of a specific volcano erupting. What you can try to convey, however, is the raw destructive power volcanos have. Capturing the emotional impact of a real-world experience is the greatest challenge of world building, but being successful here makes it the most rewarding endeavor.

So think about the success of Zendikar as a world. The full-art basic lands and verticality of environment exaggerate the landscapes in a way that mirrors such real experiences. Magic can’t capture what it’s like to look at the Grand Canyon, but it can provide a world filled with locations so astounding that you’ll pay more for its basic lands over others.

Zendikar captures the awe of natural beauty. Innistrad taps into a primal fear of the dark in many of its art pieces. Ravnica embodies the claustrophobia of city life. Fictional worlds don’t just encapsulate human culture, but also our shared visceral experiences.

Building a Better World

Human nature is largely driven by the opposite motives of comfort and curiosity. Successful world building taps into both of these drives, giving each of us something old, something new, something borrowed, and probably some Blue spells. Familiar tropes help guide our expectations and give our brains something easy to latch onto. The foreign teases our curiosity, often convincing us to explore foreign parts of our own world. Finally, compelling worlds deliver visceral and emotional experiences that reflect the feelings we’ve stored in our memories. If there is one aspect of game design that Magic has historically excelled at above all others, it has been constructing deep and exiting planes for us to enjoy.

Until next time, planeswalkers, may your own fictional expedition bring you back around to the Earth that surrounds you every day.
