compelling argument

I love how everyone in the pjo fandom is pretty much chill and open-minded when it comes to sorting the pjo/hoo characters into hogwart houses but then Percy is mentioned and literally everyone loses their mind

I understand there’s been some confusion online as to whether it’s ever right to punch a Nazi in the face.  There is a compelling argument that all speech is equal and we should trust to the discourse to reveal these ideas for what they are and confidently expect them to be denounced and crushed out by the mechanisms of democracy and freedom.

All I can tell you is, from my perspective as an old English socialist and cultural liberal who is probably way to the woolly left from most of you and actually has a medal for services to free speech – yes, it is always correct to punch Nazis. They lost the right to not be punched in the face when they started spouting genocidal ideologies that in living memory killed millions upon millions of people. And anyone who stands up and respectfully applauds their perfect right to say these things should probably also be punched, because they are clearly surplus to human requirements. Nazis do not need a hug. Nazis do not need to be indulged. Their world doesn’t get better until you’ve been removed from it. Your false equivalences mean nothing. Their agenda is always, always, extermination. Nazis need a punch in the face.

(And the argument that such assaults allow Nazis to get more attention doesn’t work so well when they were already going live on a national television network, because this is where we are now. This is how normalised their presence in our culture is.)

Glad we got that cleared up.

—  Warren Ellis, (@warrenellis) ORBITAL OPERATIONS newsletter 22nd Jan 17.

Admin Note: Representation IS important, but so is avoiding erasure. Crowley and Chuck, both, are major characters with canon LGBTQIA orientations, Charlie was openly gay, as were side characters like Damien & Barnes and Ceasr & Jesse and Corbett, and compelling arguments exist for reading Castiel as asexual. It’s equally as important to recognize the characters that are actively providing representation as it is to make wishes for those that aren’t.

Anyway people keep asking me for reasons why I like non-white Percy so much and. I mean, aside from all the already compelling arguments that we need representation desperately, and we could always use more series with well-developed non-white protagonists that don’t have racist tropes applied to them. (those reasons alone should be enough.)

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

In this case, Percy being a person of color would add a new dimension to the plot, the character, how the world interacts with him, and how he interacts with the world.

1. He is automatically branded as a “troubled kid” right off the bat, before people even meet him.

Reread that, and then ask yourself if you know any white kids with this problem. That’s what I thought.

However, if he’s not white, not only is this believable, but it’s actually the expected outcome.

Now, I guess if you saw a white kid with this intense brooding expression like Percy is supposed to have, maybe your guard would go up. And I know he’s got authority problems. But this isn’t something that he can modify or adapt to; it happens without him realizing it, without him being able to control it, regardless of how he tries to behave better, and it happens on a regular basis.

I’m sick of seeing common poc problems applied to white characters by doing a bunch of buildup to make it seem believable, when all you really need to do is make the character not white. White kids have no idea what it feels like to be judged that way, so the audience this would really speak to is non-white kids. (don’t come at me listing white kids who get judged this way, because i promise you, every single one of them has the option to change it if they stop acting a certain way. non-white kids don’t get that option, because it’s based on their skin, not their behavior.)

2. The Mist and the media work against him.

Here’s the thing: it’s really hard to convince people that a white kid is a criminal. It’s really easy to convince people that a black or brown kid is a criminal. The media is so quick to exploit (and create) this problem.

There’s a lot of quotes about how the Mist works by conforming to what people expect to see. And when the vast majority of people see a person of color at a crime scene, they assume they’re the criminal. While as when they see a white person at a crime scene, they assume they’re the victim. So if Percy isn’t white, it makes sense that the Mist would work against him.

The way the entire nation turns against him and starts hunting him down in Lightning Thief is eerily reminiscent of how brown and black boys are treated by law enforcement and how the media runs rampant with the stories. The way they begin digging up dirt on his past and branding him as a suspect, despite the fact that he is also missing, there’s no evidence that he did anything wrong, and they have every reason to think he is the victim, is exactly the way the media treats countless black and brown victims.

People are ready to believe he killed his own mother because he got expelled from school several times, despite having no history of any homicidal tendencies at all. I promise you, if something like this really happened to a white kid, there’d be dozens of articles of people tearfully talking about how he was bullied in school and he adored his mother and this couldn’t have happened, it just can’t be. Furthermore: they media gives Annabeth and Grover the benefit of the doubt, because Annabeth and Grover are white.

“Who are the other children in this photo?” Barabara Walters asked dramatically. “Who is the man with them? Is Percy Jackson a delinquent, a terrorist, or perhaps the brainwashed victim of a frightening new cult?”

She calls them “children” and Ares a “man” while she calls Percy a delinquent, a terrorist, or, maybe, if she’s feeling a little inkling to not be completely racist today, maybe he might be a brainwashed victim. He’s obviously not innocent, so if by some miracle he happens to be a victim, he’s obviously got to be brainwashed. Also: have you ever heard anyone use the word “terrorist” about a white person like… it just doesn’t happen.

Think about how crazy this is! Percy is a child, seen standing next to a full grown man who looks like a ripped biker, and people are talking about him as though he is the criminal! That could only happen to a brown or black kid, like, I’m sorry, that’s just how the American media works.

And of course, it would definitely make sense that people would readily believe Percy attacked a cheerleader and set a school on fire.

3. This quote

“A gang of kids had circled us. Six of them in all – white kids with expensive clothes and mean faces. Like the kids at Yancy Academy: rich brats playing at being bad boys.”

The fact that he adds, “white”…. I mean, yeah, a white kid could have said this quote (a white writer wrote it, after all), but it makes more sense coming from a kid who isn’t white. We know Percy comes from a poor background and that’s definitely the reason he’s so turned off by how they’re rich and pretending to be street kids, so why wouldn’t it also make sense for him to come from a brown or black background and that’s why he’s so turned off by how they’re white and pretending to be street kids?

Answer: it does make sense. It makes perfect sense.

headcanon that in law school, foggy and matt used to google old case files that were never solved, disputes that were never settled, and defend either side for fun

which typically ended with one of them going , “the prosecution makes a compelling argument, but have you considered this” *puts middle finger up*

If there’s one thing that really gets me during this episode, is the failed opportunity RT missed with keeping Adam’s White Fang branch separate from the White Fang as a whole.

To me, the White Fang has become a group of boring, stale little grunts that don’t bring much to the table other than to be part of Adam and Company. They went from a peaceful organization of a group of people that were wronged, discriminated, and ostracized to basically just lackeys for the whim of one psychopathic dude hell bent on ruining any possible chances of peace and equality. And I don’t mean that just because they’ve turned to more violent assaults. If written right, they could still compel a reasonable argument with plenty of shaded and gray areas as to why they’ve become like this (ex: humans not listening while they protested peacefully, their people still being mistreated, etc.).

The problem is, it’s not being written right. The White Fang, as a whole, are treated as these comical grunts and just, simply, have no sense of depth. And in this episode, I saw a chance that could have added more to them but RT just had to shoot their own foot.

In this episode, we get a bit of info as to how the WF work, with sister branches in possibly all of the main cities. We also see the possibility that Adam’s branch in Vale could have been overtaken by him, and could hold different views from the main WF as a whole. I don’t know about you, but seeing different views within the WF amongst branch leaders, how they view humans and what level of violence they would tolerate, and how they would condone/respond to their own members behaving this way… would have been infinitely more interesting for the organization than, “Hur dur Adam seems to control way more than just the Vale branch and it seems like the WF all back him up hurhur betcha didn’t see that coming???” They literally just redefined them as grunts once again, lacking any depth.

AND. HONESTLY. THE FACT THAT THEY DIDN’T EVEN LET YOU SPECULATE A BIT ON WHETHER THE TWO DUDES REALLY DIDN’T FOLLOW ADAM OR NOT NOT EVEN 30 SECONDS AFTER THAT… IS. WOW.

No suspense. No build up. Definitely not shocking because that was like revealing a fucking twist for a toddler aimed show “WHERE’S SWIPER? DO YOU KNOW WHERE SWIPER IS????? OH WOW HE’S HERE.

My point is. If you’re going to fucking make them seem mysterious and add some form of suspense to your new supposed “villains” can you do better than literally revealing them a few seconds afterwards?

Miles and Kerry could have literally ended their scene with just these lines,

“An interesting development, wouldn’t you say?”

“Interesting indeed…”

And that’s it. That would at least give the viewers something to chew on. Why is it interesting? Are they good? Bad? Do they seem shady? Can we trust them?

But no. NoooOoOOoOoOoOO. We gotta reveal where fucking Swiper is.

You were sitting in your dorm room, your head on Jungkook’s lap as you watched reruns of some random soap opera on the tv. You waited for him to say something, anything, to talk to you for once instead of burying his face in his phone.

I may despise you with the burning white hot intensity of the sun, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love you!” The actress on tv yelled at what you assumed was her husband before kissing him intensely.

You used to be like that with Jungkook a few weeks ago, until the fights and the sex after just became too stressful for you to handle. Sure, you loved him and the thought of not having him terrified you but was it really any worse than what you were going through right now: sitting in the same room as him yet never having felt this lonely before in your entire life.

He used to be the man that could cheer you up no matter what happened and the first one with whom you wanted to share good news with. But now, now you couldn’t even say the most important of things to him without thinking it a million time over.

A few days later, your friend decided to drag you out to one of her frat parties in a desperate attempt to get your mind off of Jungkook, even if it was a short while. You did feel better being surrounded by your friends with cheap beer that led to some really bad decisions and even worse jokes. You were talking to Taehyung, a student pursuing the same major as you but was in a different class so you didn’t get to meet him before. He was kind, charming and sweet, treating you with utmost respect and for the few minutes that you talked to him, you felt like the burden of your almost dead relationship that you had been carrying around for months had finally disappeared.

That is until you saw Jungkook sitting on the couch of the living room with a girl straddling his lap, leaning to press her forehead against his as he smirked before kissing him. He was everything with her that he wasn’t with you. His smile practically exuding happiness and the way his eyes followed her every move was how he used to look at you until he barely even noticed your presence anymore.

Your jaw went slack but the shock didn’t hit you as hard as it should’ve, his indifferent behavior towards you and lack of conversation already a tell-tale sign that his attention had been diverted elsewhere. When the girl got up to get a drink from the kitchen, you followed her, wanting to let her know just what she was getting involved in.

“Um, hi,” You awkwardly greeted her as you began to pour yourself a drink and she nodded her head in response.

“I couldn’t help but notice, are you with Jeon Jungkook?” You tried to sound casual but the alcohol was already clouding your mind and you couldn’t help the crack in your voice or the tears that were welling up in the corner of your eyes.

“Yeah, he’s hot, isn’t he? Apparently, he’s dating some random chick too, that poor girl.” She chuckled in response, not noticing your state as she grabbed her cup and began to walk out until your words stopped her.

“She’s not just some random chick. She’s someone who waits for him to come back every night. Someone who spends her entire time thinking of him and you, you’re still fucking him even though you know he already has someone? What kind of a sick human being are you!?” You exclaimed, tears flowing down your cheeks as the dam holding back your emotions finally broke.

It was a compelling and convincing argument and for that reason she chose to ignore it, taking her cup and walking away as you collapsed on the floor only for your friend to find you later that night as a sobbing mess.

She took you home, consoling you the entire time, and put you to bed comfortably, the alcohol thankfully knocking the living daylights out of you as you found yourself falling asleep almost instantly.

The next morning you woke up to find a complete mess in the mirror in front of you, your make up smudged, hair messy and your clothes disheveled. After washing your face, you brushed your hair, tying it up neatly and put on a fresh set of clothes. Your friend was making breakfast as you heard the doorbell ring unexpectedly. Walking over to the door, you opened it hesitantly only to face what you had been absolutely scared of standing on the other side.

Jeon Jungkook.

He looked like he had been crying all night and his scent that used to make you feel comfortable was now replaced with the strong stench of alcohol.

“B-Baby, I-I—“

You stopped him before he could say anything more, sighing deeply before you began speaking.

“Look Jungkook, we knew this was bound to happen one day or the other. I just wished you would’ve told me about it instead of cheating on me like this…” Your tone was melancholic as your hands rubbed at your temples, your hangover finally making its presence known as your head began to throb.

He couldn’t even reply, tears flowing down endlessly as he sobbed pathetically and you didn’t even know what to say to him anymore. You weren’t angry with him but you weren’t exactly happy with him either. Sure, he had finally put the nail in the coffin of your dying relationship but he didn’t have to fucking cheat on you at a party you were at.

So, you decided on your last words to him to convey your gratitude for finally ending the relationship rather than holding onto the anger you felt because if there was something you needed, it was to move on.

“I love you, Jeon Jungkook and one day, I hope you’re as happy as you’re pretending to be.”

A Proposal Most Compelling

Prompt: It was a compelling and convincing argument and for that reason she chose to ignore it.
Fandom: Inuyasha
Characters: Sesshoumaru, Higurashi Kagome
Setting: Post-canon
1,000 Words

Sesshoumaru dropped gracefully out of the blue sky, and landed effortlessly in the middle of the village. A few humans who’d been standing about staggered back, gasping or crying in alarm. Sesshoumaru ignored them, and flared his youki to announce his arrival. He caught the familiar scent in the air and followed it to one of the huts.

He strode in without a pause. The miko looked up from her cooking and stared at him, her blue eyes wide.

“Sesshoumaru,” she said, her voice echoing her surprise.

He inclined his head in a greeting.

She bit her lip and shifted nervously.

“I’m sorry, Rin’s not here right now. She’s gone with Kaede-sama – one of the nearby villages was attacked –”

“It is of no consequence,” Sesshoumaru cut in. “I have not come to see Rin.”

“Oh.” The miko glanced down at her cooking, looking all the more uncertain. “Well, Inuyasha went with them. To, um, help with the rebuilding and all.”

He scoffed. “Again, that does not matter in the least, I am not here to see him.”

“Right. Then, uh, why are you here, exactly?”

Sesshoumaru arched one regal eyebrow. Wasn’t it obvious why he had come?

“I have a proposal to make,” he announced.
