  • them: but what jobs will these people do if they have no work
  • me: consider the following
  • me: not everyone needs to work, our society is quite literally that efficient.
  • me: they could do shit they actually want to do, maybe thats relaxing, maybe that's raising their families, maybe thats getting an education, you know we could live differently than how we're living now
  • them: sorry I can't see a better world, we must always stay the same because that's just what makes sense to me

Amid the hustle and bustle of the kitchen at Marcel’s, a fine dining restaurant in Washington, D.C., one member of the staff is immune to the noise. It’s David Uzzell, the 28-year-old saucier responsible for such delicacies as pan-seared foie gras or mushroom mornay sauce.

Uzzell is a deaf chef — a rarity in the vast majority of restaurant kitchens. When chef and owner Robert Wiedmaier needs to get Uzzell’s attention while expediting during dinner service, he pokes him in the shoulder.

“David gets poked a lot,” says Wiedmaier. “There might be a dent in his shoulder from my finger by now.”

It’s not all poking, according to Uzzell. “We’ve come up with some workarounds,” he says — or writes, using one of the many notepads that are permanently kept at his station to help with more lengthy communications. Having completely lost his hearing by the time he was a year old, Uzzell is used to having to figure out how to communicate to a hearing audience.

“I’ve never seen somebody text so fast,” says Wiedmaier.

Launching the Future of Space Communications

Our newest communications satellite, named the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-M or TDRS-M, launches Aug. 18 aboard an Atlas V rocket from our Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It will be the 13th TDRS satellite and will replenish the fleet of satellites supporting the Space Network, which provides nearly continuous global communications services to more than 40 of our missions.

Communicating from space wasn’t always so easy. During our third attempt to land on the moon in 1970, the Apollo 13 crew had to abort their mission when the spacecraft’s oxygen tank suddenly exploded and destroyed much of the essential equipment onboard. Made famous in the movie ‘Apollo 13’ by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, our NASA engineers on the ground talked to the crew and fixed the issue. Back in 1970 our ground crew could only communicate with their ground teams for 15 percent of their orbit – adding yet another challenge to the crew. Thankfully, our Apollo 13 astronauts survived and safely returned to Earth.

Now, our astronauts don’t have to worry about being disconnected from their teams! With the creation of the TDRS program in 1973, space communications coverage increased rapidly from 15 percent coverage to 85 percent coverage. And as we’ve continued to add TDRS spacecraft, coverage zoomed to over 98 percent!

TDRS is a fleet of satellites that beam data from low-Earth-orbiting space missions to scientists on the ground. These data range from cool galaxy images from the Hubble Space Telescope to high-def videos from astronauts on the International Space Station! TDRS is operated by our Space Network, and it is thanks to these hardworking engineers and scientists that we can continuously advance our knowledge about the universe!

What’s up next in space comm? Only the coolest stuff ever! LASER BEAMS. Our scientists are creating ways to communicate space data from missions through lasers, which have the ability to transfer more data per minute than typical radio-frequency systems. Both radio-frequency and laser comm systems send data at the speed of light, but with laser comm’s ability to send more data at a time through infrared waves, we can receive more information and further our knowledge of space.

How are we initiating laser comm? Our Laser Communications Relay Demonstration is launching in 2019! We’re only two short years away from beaming space data through lasers! This laser communications demo is the next step to strengthen this technology, which uses less power and takes up less space on a spacecraft, leaving more power and room for science instruments.

Watch the TDRS launch live online at 8:03 a.m. EDT on Aug. 18: https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive

“NIKOLA TESLA FOR THE FIRST TIME DESCRIBES HIS NEW SYSTEM FOR SUPPLYING WIRELESS POWER TO RUN ALL THE EARTH’S INDUSTRIES.”

By a series of discoveries and inventions just perfected, Nikola Tesla, the electrical scientist, has upset what has hitherto been regarded as one of the fixed laws of nature. “Every effect diminishes with distance,” is the way the textbooks have expressed it. Tesla now says that instead of decreasing like other forces, electricity may be made to increase in intensity with the distance traveled.

The full significance of this discovery may not be at once apparent. It is obvious, however, that it annihilates space. There can be no limit to the power of the electric wave which increases in intensity the further it travels.

For nearly 20 years Tesla has been working on his plan, he calls it his wireless “World System.” If it is put into successful execution it will convert the earth into a gigantic conduit, which will pass power for all earthly activities, and make possible communication with other planets.

From time to time Tesla has made partial announcements as his work progressed. This, however, is the first comprehensive account of his system as a whole that the inventor has consented to give to the world.

“Through ages past man has anyways attempted to project in some way or other energy into space. In all his attempts, no matter what agent he employed, he was hampered by the inexorable law of nature which says every effect diminishes with distance, generally as the square of the same, sometimes more rapidly.

“I saw at once that space was annihilated in all the three aspects; in the transport of our bodies and materials and in the earth, transmission of the energies necessary for our existence. You can imagine how profoundly I was affected by this revelation. Technically, it meant that the earth, as a whole, had certain periods of vibrations, and that by by impressing electrical vibrations of the same periods upon it, it could be thrown into oscillations of such nature that innumerable benefits could be derived.

“It is difficult to convey an idea of these inventions without resorting to technical terms. The first and best known of these is my transformer, which enables the production of electrical vibrations of transcending intensities. I have already attained activities of many millions of horse power; but this is nothing compared to those which I am expecting to get with my improved apparatus.

“The second is what I have termed my magnifying transmitter, which I look upon as my best electrical invention, and with which any distance can be bridged. I have already passed of this wonderful instrument and am confident that a message can be flashed to such a distance as the planet Mars.

“Some technical men would be disposed to look upon such statements as those of a dreamer, but it is only because they have not had opportunities to see experiments which I have actually performed. The third invention I have designated as the “Art of individualization,” which enables the transmission of an unlimited number of messages through a wire or wireless, without the slightest interference. Not before this improvement is universally adopted will the world fully realise the benefits of telegraphy and telephony. The fourth invention is my receiver, which concentrates the energy transmitted over a wide area into the operating device.”

What would the voltage in your transmitter be?

“In the transmission of telegraphic and telephonic messages I shall employ from five to ten million volts, but in transmitting power in great quantities, as much as one hundred million volts will be used.“

How will your “World System” compare with those now in use as regards to cost?

“We could easily afford to offer a transmission of telegraphic and telephonic messages to any terrestrial distance for five cents a word. In a short while no one will think it anything out of the way to dictate or to write a long letter across the Pacific.”

How long does it take for the transmission of a message, by your system, around the world?

“The exact time is, according to my measurements, 43-1000 of a second, which is a speed about 50 per cent greater than that of light.

“The impulse starts from my magnifying transmitter with infinite speed, slows first rapidly and then at a lesser rate until, when it has penetrated to a distance of 6000 miles from the transmitter, it proceeds with approximately the speed of light. From there on it accelerates, first slowly and then more rapidly, and reaches the opposite point of the globe again with infinite speed only to rebound and pass through the same phases on its way back to the transmitter.

“This movement of electricity through the Earth, which takes place strictly in accordance with a mathematical law, and enables a great number of accurate measurements and determinations to be made, which are of immense practical and scientific value.”

Is your universal marine service based upon this principle?

“Largely so. In setting up and maintaining stationary waves in the earth its entire surface is subdivided in perfectly definite zones of electric activity, so that any observer of all those data which are of importance to navigators as the latitude and longitude, the position with reference to a given point, the speed of travel, and the course followed. This method is quite exact and reliable, and once introduced will be instrumental in a great saving of time, life and property.”

When your system of time distribution is introduced what kind of devices will be used for indicating the hour?

“They will be ever so much simpler than the ordinary clocks or watches, being entirely devoid of wheel work. For personal use a small case will be provided resembling that of a watch which would indicate precisely the time and require no more attention than a compass for instance. The large clocks on towers and public edifices in general will be replaced by extremely simple devices operated on the same principle.

“All these will be ‘tuned’ to a wireless wave sent out at a certain time. This will automatically set the hands of every ‘tuned’ time piece.”

In operating stock tickers, will the present instruments have to be replaced by others?

“Not at all, they will remain intact. A great financier told me that this should be one of the most valuable and practical applications of my system, inasmuch as the instantaneous operation of such instruments all the world over will go far toward allaying panics and failures which are at present mostly due to the inadequacy and stagnation of channels of information.”

“A business man will be able to dictate in his office a letter which will appear in type at any other place he wishes without loss of time in the transmission. It will be exactly as though he had his stenographer close by. In the same manner it will be practicable to send a handwritten letter or even a check, and what is more important, it will not be possible to falsify the signature.”

Will the transmission of complex musical productions require complicated apparatuses?

Not at all. The apparatus at any of the master plants, transmitting a great number of musical compositions, will be of necessity complicated, but the subscriber will need only a telephone receiver, and, if he desires exclusiveness, and individualizing device in connection, which, however, will be rarely required. He will be none the less able to listen to the most complex opera played in some remote party of the world. What is more, he can carry the entire outfit with him on his walks and travels, and whenever he desires to listen to the music he can do so.

The wireless system which I have developed does not contemplate competition with established lighting systems in densely populated districts, but it offers an ideal solution for the illumination of isolated places. The light will be furnished by exhausted glass tubes, bent in all sorts of ornamental shapes, and is of surpassing beauty, resembling closely the daylight. The lamps will last forever. The entire apparatus for lighting the average country dwelling will contain no moving part whatever, and could be readily carried about in a small valise. It will be quite immaterial in which region of the earth the house to be lighted is located. Distance will not affect the charge.“

How far from the Earth’s surface can power be transmitted by this wireless system?

“To any distance; in fact, the greater the elevation above the ground that easier it is to supply the power to the vehicle, such as an airship crossing the ocean.”

What do you consider the most important application of your system?

The transmission of power, of course. The operation of aerial machines alone will be of a revolutionizing influence, in as much as it will afford a perfect solution of this important problem. Another great field will be the irrigation and fertilization of the soil by wireless power. The time is not distance when a farmer will have installed on his place an apparatus for continuously manufacturing, from the gases of the atmosphere, nitric compounds which will be used to fertilize, while a motor will pump the water and perform other duties; all the energy being supplied from a plant perhaps thousands of miles away. This system can be extended so as to make productive vast tracts of now barren lands located in various countries. I believe that the export of wireless power will be one of the chief resources of the United States and other fortunately situated countries in times to come.“

If kids can’t socialize, who should parents blame? Simple: They should blame themselves. This is the argument advanced in It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens, by Microsoft researcher Danah Boyd. Boyd—full disclosure, a friend of mine—has spent a decade interviewing hundreds of teens about their online lives.

What she has found, over and over, is that teenagers would love to socialize face-to-face with their friends. But adult society won’t let them. “Teens aren’t addicted to social media. They’re addicted to each other,” Boyd says. “They’re not allowed to hang out the way you and I did, so they’ve moved it online.”

It’s true. As a teenager in the early ’80s I could roam pretty widely with my friends, as long as we were back by dark. But over the next three decades, the media began delivering a metronomic diet of horrifying but rare child-abduction stories, and parents shortened the leash on their kids. Politicians warned of incipient waves of youth wilding and superpredators (neither of which emerged). Municipalities crafted anti-loitering laws and curfews to keep young people from congregating alone. New neighborhoods had fewer public spaces. Crime rates plummeted, but moral panic soared. Meanwhile, increased competition to get into college meant well-off parents began heavily scheduling their kids’ after-school lives.

The result, Boyd discovered, is that today’s teens have neither the time nor the freedom to hang out. So their avid migration to social media is a rational response to a crazy situation. They’d rather socialize F2F, so long as it’s unstructured and away from grown-ups. “I don’t care where,” one told Boyd wistfully, “just not home.”

automation should be the downfall of capitalism, it literally proves not everyone needs to work, and we can all survive perfectly fine, and with all to have access to education we can automate even more shit most people don’t want to do.

capitalists literally don’t want to advance our society, they want us to stagnate so we can pretend people need the threat of death to work towards bettering themselves and the future.

Color Correspondences

As an artist I found color correspondences on this site to be so USEFUL, except they’re missing so much! The more I dug the more it seemed that way across the board. I didn’t feel for my practice that bright red and dark red evoked the same reaction, so I opted to make my own correspondence list.

Every color on this doc was carefully selected to be representative of that “group” of colors, ie. bright pink or neon blue, with each color including an hex code that best sums up that color group. Color correspondences were taken not only from pre-existing materials, but from research (still ongoing) surrounding that color. This includes areas the color is found in nature, art or the world, as well as emotional responses evoked in myself.  Found Here (My Correspondences Doc, which includes many sources used for colors!)

For my practice this list is used across candles, fiber and art.

i don’t use any other “social media” besides tumblr so maybe this is a realization many people have already had and i’m just understanding this now, but someone just showed me the vast number of emoticons / emojis one can use on facebook and we were talking about how those emojis can be used on their own to communicate so many things…which is really cool but also makes me so fucking angry because like do people realize that that’s basically a form of AAC?

like, it’s not that different than a communication board or whatever with pre-set images one can select to communicate various emotions or thoughts - the difference here being that because emojis aren’t seen as AAC and aren’t only used by disabled people, they are treated really differently and people think emojis are fun and cool and use them as a convenient way to communicate things without having to necessarily attach words to it…whereas PECS boards or other similar AAC things - including apps that work on iPhones or iPads or whatever  - are mostly treated as “special” and often pitiable or whatever and that’s just like??

to be clear, I’m super glad that it has become so much more possible to express oneself using little pictures of pizza and cats and rainclouds, but if you’re gonna use emojis / pictures to tell other people stuff, maybe also consider that doing so is a fucking valid form of communication

guardian angels of the signs

the aries guardian angels are always on guard for potential accidents. aries have a risk taking capacity in every sense of the word, physically, emotionally, romantically. and an aries heartbreak can make angels weep because it is so innocent. the aries guardian angels have a lightning reflex, sudden chaos always threatens

the taurus guardian angels send messages in music, art, in sleep, and romantic partners. they can appear in forms of nature, often giving tremendous sources of inspiration and intuition through the body. a taurus knows that when their body knows, that this is pure. the taurus guardian angels know they can fly slowly and calmly, rest assured that discriminative judgment is always active

the gemini guardian angels fly in pairs, each keeping a watch for one twin, knowing their impulses, their quirks, and their propensity for anxieties and accidents - especially with the hands. mercury rules transport so geminis are protected when driving a car.

the cancer guardian angels sit closely, knowing they are constantly teaching and guiding in prophetic ways. they can leave messages in scripts of the moon and they are strongly protective of the person’s home. angels will guard this with all of their will. when angels protect a cancer, they become angels of the cancer’s family, they know the vitalness

the leo guardian angel is always waiting behind the spotlight, ready for presence when the lights have dimmed. there are few people a vulnerable leo will open up to. their guardian angels protect the heart. but they cannot prevent heartbreak, only offer unconditional love when they feel invisible

the virgo’s guardian angel often hides in the shadow, knowing the virgo will respond unkindly to being bothered or prodded. they are activated when the virgo becomes anxious, often requiring only a thought to dim the thoughts of pain. mercury rules transport so virgos are protected when driving a car

the libra’s guardian angel circles the heart closely, ever ensuring heartbreak does not cause complete death. they respond well to the libra’s expression of beauty, often activated through the libra’s natural play with the universe - lighting candles, creating colour, and being angels in human form to people

the scorpio’s guardian angel stands between two worlds, taking on the task of one who will constantly visit and than vanish from their frame of consciousness. the scorpio’s guardian angels wait with messages of profound sacred guidance from the unconscious. their wisdom is readily available

the sagittarius guardian angels absorb into nature, often reflective of the individual’s cosmic experience of divinity. they await in the higher mind, ready to dispel messages and guidance. jupiter rules foreign nations, sagittarians are protected when they travel abroad

the capricorn’s guardian angels appear and disappear, often conscious of the individual’s need for self sufficiency, but constantly leaving reminders through patterns and synchronicities that beneath everything their angels are waiting without judgement or criticism. the silver winged angel may appear to capricorn

the aquarian guardian angels are visitors from other galaxies, often activating their presence through sudden prophetic streams of ‘knowing’. they spark information through the frequent visits aquarians take to strange dimensions of consciousness. they may communicate through technological methods

the pisces guardian angel protects and guides overtly, often requiring constant communication and acknowledgment. the pisces rarely feels that she is alone. the angel guards closely for psychic absorption, and guards closely in sleep

💕  Ametrine (improve communication)
💕 Clear Quartz (power up spell)
💕 Salt (protection, purifying, honesty)
💕 Basil (friendships)
💕 Rose Buds (or petals) (close friendships, love, relationships)
💕 2 Blue Candles or tealights (communication, trust)

💕 On your cellphone open the contact to the person or the chat you communicate with them through, place it on the floor or a table. To the right and left of it place your candles and light them.

💕 In a small bowl or container place your herbs and place it above your phone

💕 In a circle around your phone and the bowl of herbs place your crystals. If they are point crystals have them pointing at your phone.

💕 Using your salt make a small circle around your phone.

💕 Hover your hands over your phone and close your eyes, feel the energies of your candles, herbs and crystals radiating from them, how they pass through your body and your phone. Focus your own energy in your hands and imagine it emit in gentle waves down into your phone as well.

💕 “No distance can keep us apart, I connect to you and you connect to me, over mountains and seas we will still be in touch, we shall remain together for communication is key.Repeat the last line (bold) as many times as you feel is necessary.

💕 Finish spell by blowing out your candles and letting the smoke trail off imagining it traveling far off to where the other is.

Notes: If both you and the other person do this spell it will be more powerful but it is not necessary. Also, this is to help you keep communication, you still have to put effort into keeping the communication going for a successful LDR. If you are missing one or two of the crystals that is fine, just try to have as many of each as you can.

your actual internet persona vs your ideal internet persona

The 10th and 11th House are usually where you want to find what you’re like on the Internet. Why? The 10th House is the house of the public and the  world. Your public image is seen through your 10th House. The Internet is your online public image, so therefore, you can find insight to see how people view you online. The 11th House shows how you ideally want to be seen online. The 11th House is naturally ruled by Aquarius, which is a sign associated with technology. The 11th House also rules over friendships and community, and with that, you want to show the best parts of yourself.

Be aware that any dominant elements in your natal chart (dominant planet, sun, moon, and/or dominant house) will also be seen online.

If you have duplicated signs due to interceptions, meaning that you have the same sign ruling both Houses, then this post will not apply for you. Those with duplicated signs in the 10th and 11th House will tend to have an online image that is similar to their ideal image… Or can struggle to identify how they want to establish themselves online. There is a strong emphasis on the duplicated sign when it comes to online affairs.

Aries in the 10th//Taurus in the 11th - You are seen to be assertive, direct, and straightforward online. It’s hard to misunderstand what you’re saying since you’re very straightforward, but you could also be very aggressive. With that in mind, you can participate in a lot of arguments and debates. However, you ideally want to be seen as someone who is calm, steady, and appealing. Sometimes, you can feel that your current online image is too harsh and brash.  You ideally want to be seen as someone who is comforting. You try your best to remain calm and comfortable, but you can be easily affected by what you see on the Internet. It can be hard for you to accept that you’re wrong, for you can be very stubborn online.

Taurus in the 10th//Gemini in the 11th - You generally tend to be well liked on the Internet. With Taurus being a sign ruled by Venus, your blog or social media can be very visually appealing. People tend to come to you for good vibes, and it’s hard to make you angry. However, you can be seen to be shallow, superficial, and maybe unintelligent. People can underestimate you due to this, which is why you want to be seen as someone who is educated online. You want to be seen as a fun, carefree, and talkative individual for you feel that you can be stuck in your comfort zone sometimes. Ultimately, you want to have a worry-free experience on the Internet because not everything should be taken seriously.

Gemini in the 10th//Cancer in the 11th - People look up to you on an intellectual plane when it comes to online matters. You are fun, spontaneous, and hilarious. You may like to post a lot of memes and laugh at a lot of posts. You don’t take things too seriously on the Internet, since it’s all just a bunch of fun for you. However, you may feel that your emotions can be hidden and ideally, you want people to take you seriously when you express your emotions online. Usually, you contribute a logical and rational argument, but you may deeply seek for an emotional understanding. Ultimately, you want other people to see that you have the ability to be someone they can emotionally rely on, even though, you’re seen to be light-hearted person.

Cancer in the 10th//Leo in the 11th - People find you to be a very sweet individual online. You may find that a lot of people come to you for advice. There is a vibe of safety and comfort when people approach you on social media. You may be very emotionally understanding to others, and can give good advice. Generally, you are seen to be sweet, but sometimes, you can find that people take advantage of your sweet nature. You can be passive-aggressive when you don’t get your own way, making you quite moody. There is a part of you that wants to shine above the rest. Due to this lack of respect, you may try to make yourself look respectable online by expressing your creativity and talents. Instead of having to praise and comfort others online, you’d like it if someone praised you.

Leo in the 10th//Virgo in the 11th - When it comes to your online persona, you are seen to be very charismatic. It’s likely that you are very popular on social media, and you can quite a lot of attention. You are quite creative in your online expression. However, through all of this popularity, you may want others to just see you as a normal person. Sometimes people tend to forget that you are just a normal individual and can treat you unfairly due to your popularity. You usually know the right things to say, and you have the ability to remain neutral and diplomatic with any conflicts. You strongly focus on beauty and you try to make your social media accounts look aesthetically pleasing. However, you tend to focus a lot on people’s interactions online, and people can find you to be a shallow, gossipy person. Due to this, you can feel like you are at a distance from others. The reason why you pay attention to such interactions is because you ultimately want to have intimate relationships online. With a lack of information shown, people will usually find you to be either mysterious or intimidating. This lack of understanding hurts you, because there is a fun, dorky side of you, and this is ultimately the side of you that you want to show. There are so many things you want to do, but you don’t go out of your way to do it because you feel like it threatens your online image. There is a part of you that wants to stop caring about what’s right and wrong, and just have the freedom to do whatever you want. Instead of being a lone wolf, you want to be seen as someone cooperative, flexible, and well-rounded.

Aquarius in the 10th//Pisces in the 11th - When you have Aquarius in the 10th, your social media accounts are popular in a strange sense. You like to set trends, and you are probably updated on the latest memes. Sometimes you post spontaneously or erratically out of the blue. You may feel that you lack an emotional, yet creative expression to others. With your public image, you want to be understood and inspire others in a clear, straightforward fashion. You have so much creativity, but you feel like you just need a little push to make it come to life.

I’ve seen a lot of ideas about humans being on alien ships, and most are like “because of [whatever reason], it would be good if ships had one human on board” and there are a lot of stories that say that there’s only one human on the alien ship. But I don’t think that’s a good idea?? A lot of people have a hard time being a foreign exchange student a country where they don’t speak the language; I don’t think most humans could handle being the only human on an alien ship???? For various reasons, like loneliness/medical issues/etc. Being on an alien ship sounds awesome, but they wouldn’t have any support.

Maybe aliens don’t understand THAT; “Despite being capable enough on their own, humans have to come in groups of 2+ for some reason.”

“Let the humans choose their own groups; their social systems are much more complex, and despite their famous ability to socialize with just about any other species, if two humans ‘don’t get along’, meaning that they cause each other to have unfavorable emotions and occasionally will not cooperate, the result is negative for both the humans and the crew that they reside in.”

Maybe something like this?

The first time humans and the recently-contacted alien species “X”, the first to form an alliance with humans, attempt to team up, everyone realizes that they need to learn more about each other. They decide that should should be a simple exchange of personnel; these crewmen would work simple jobs on each other’s ships and interact with the crew in order to learn more about each other and how to successfully communicate. Both humans and Xs desperately want this to succeed. But, hearing rumors of the humans’ prowess, the X want to minimize any possible casualties, so they suggest that they exchange just one person each at the start; one X heads to the human command ship, and one human heads to the X’s.

Everything begins successfully.

The X on board the human ship is a model worker. It observes, asks questions, and when it doesn’t understand something, many humans surround and brainstorm ideas on how to explain things to it. Throwing out ideas left and right “It’s a bit like seeing color, but it’s invisible, and through the nose-” “No you idiot, it’s like those feel-auras it was talking about, but the nose is the sensory organ for it-” and eventually the X understands. In turn, when contributing ideas not easily understood by humans, it finds that many take this as a challenge, and will not stop bothering the X until they are sure that they understand. But with or without the aid of its new crewmates, the X never seems distressed that it can’t understand or be understood by others.

The human crew quickly notices that the X has not contacted its main ship, or for that matter, anyone else.

“Have you tried talking to your ship?”

“There was no need to try, I already know it won’t work because of conflicting signals.”

“Well, did you need to? Talk to your friends or family or anything? I’m sure I can rig something up if you need to.”

“I have no need to communicate with anyone as of now. Any information that will eventually need to be communicated will be included in my report to the High Command.”

“No, but did you WANT to talk to anyone? Like your family or something, so they know you’re okay? And I mean, I’m sure you must want to talk about how weird we humans are and stuff, right?”

“My family will be notified of my status when I return to the High Command. And all data I gather on humans will be included in my report.”

The X, despite being so far away from home and surrounded by pushy humans, does not seem homesick or lonely at all.

On the X’s ship, the human is enthusiastic and excited to learn new things at first. After all, they’re learning about and interacting with ALIENS; it’s freaking awesome. But it doesn’t take too long for the novelty to wear off and the human to realize that they are truly alone. No one else speaks a human language, or is physically capable of doing so. While translation technology makes communication possible, linguistic differences make both exact or truly accurate translations impossible, so it’s not the same as being able to have a simple chat with friends. And chatting with friends doesn’t come easily; technology between the ships is not compatible, and any communication signals from the human’s own communication device are cancelled out by signals from the Xs’ ship.

The human becomes isolated from all other humans, on board a ship of 200 Xs.

Any difficulty communicating is eventually pushed aside and ignored but the Xs; if the human can’t communicate an idea, and the Xs don’t get it, what can they do? They do not need to understand the human or have the human understand them in order to do their jobs, so there is no point in trying. They understand that this project is important to the alliance, but do not understand how important communication is to humans.

The human has no help from others; several humans asking the same questions might get the idea that communicating certain ideas are important. But there is also no one who could understand them, no one to brainstorm ideas with:

“Now, how do we explain the concept of smell to a species from a planet where no organism has a nose?”

“Oh! My cousin was born without a sense of smell, and we sort of explained things like…”

Any problems communicating human ideas, or understanding X ideas, they face alone.

On that note, the human finds it difficult to to relate with any of the Xs. Xs can socialize fine between each other, but their standards for camaraderie is much different than that of humans. Humans are famous for their ability to empathize with any species, but it is not a two-way street, leaving the human caring about their new ship-mates with little care for themselves in return. They do not put more effort in helping the human understand, nor do they go out of their way to interact with the human outside of work situations. The human knows that it is not the fault of the Xs, that this is just the way Xs are, but they can’t help but begin to feel unappreciated, unwanted, and depressed.

Having long-since passed simple homesickness and culture shock, the human just wants desperately to talk to another human. It wouldn’t have to be anyone from the same country, or someone from the same field of work, or heck, even someone who spoke the same language. Even humans who can’t understand each other’s words can have get an idea from hand gestures, and historically, people who speak different languages that live in proximity to each other develop new dialects or learn to understand each others spoken language to communicate. Even with an age gap, they’ve lived during some of the same world events; they could find something to relate to each other. Another human would understand how strange X biology is compared to human biology, right? Another human could make jokes, laugh at the new, awesome, and weird things that they encounter. Another human could confirm that their feelings were real, right?

Humans are biologically engineered for socialization after all. Their species survived and evolved over hundreds of thousands of years because of their social nature. Xs understand this, and have heard that humans occasionally might have special needs like extraneous physical contact, but do not understand the implications. That this made humans biologically dependent on socialization for survival. That humans’ mental, emotional, and eventually even physical states can deteriorate without affection from friends and family.

And so the human gets ill.

Not quite used to human physicality in general or variation in physicality between individuals, and after hearing the legendary stories of humans surviving seemingly impossible situations, the Xs work their human crewmate hard. The human, already emotionally exhausted from isolation, easily gets physically exhausted. They contract an illness not unlike the common cold, though it couldn’t be given that their current location does not have any traces of the virus. With proper rest, and maybe more chances to chat with some friends back on the command ship, would help the human immensely. But the human, in their emotional and physical distress, can not communicate the idea that yes, humans can recover from illness like this without 5 different medicines. That talking to loved ones, or someone, anyone, would do more than just make them happy but give them the emotional will to make them physically well. There are no other humans around to explain human medical issues, or to provide a cool cloth for their fever, or to talk to while they’re sick in bed and unable to work, or…

The Xs change course and modify their signals in order to send a message to the human command ship and inform them that the human has fallen ill. Afraid of retaliation and wanting to ensure good faith, they request a strategy, asking what needs to be done in this situation. The human ship responds; the X on their ship has recently fallen ill as well. Xs do not have the hardy immune system that humans do, and while precautions were taken, it still caught a cold. The decision to return the crewmates to their home ships is made. The information that they managed to gather during their exchange this time will be used for a more successful future exchange and other interactions in the future.

The X suggests to their commanders more precautions regarding illnesses, and also advises any future volunteers to talk as much as possible to the other humans; they love interaction, learning, and teaching.

The human suggests that a special channel be created for easy communication, and makes only one demand; it doesn’t matter what the other species demands, don’t you dare let anyone go alone, ever again.

When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket.

Project West Ford and Earth’s short lived artificial ring.

Around the 1950’s and 60’s satellites were a brand new technology and most global communications were conducted via undersea cables. In the late 1950’s the US Military decided that with the Cold War growing hotter, it was time for the military to invest in a new international communications system.  Thus Project West Ford was born.  An invention of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineers, Project West Ford called for the creation of an artificial ring that would orbit the Earth.  The ring was to be composed of 480 million tiny copper needles, each about as large as a human hair (1.78 cm long, 17 um in diameter). Each needle essentially served as a copper dipole antenna, and as a collective the ring would serve as a giant global antenna allowing radio microwave communications to be sent world wide.

The first launch of Project West Ford occurred in 1961, however the needles failed to disburse.  A second successful launch occurred on the 9th of May, 1963.  This time the needles successfully disbursed, and after two months they formed a 15 km wide ring around the Earth at an altitude of 3,700 km.  Initial tests were successful, the first test  sending a clear and coherent message from Camp Parks, California to Millstone Hill, Massachusetts at a data rate of  20 kbs per second.  However, over time, the needle ring began to scatter due to the forces of solar winds, gravity, and light pressure.  After only two months after the successful launch, messages could only be sent at a speed of 400 bits.  The project was canceled in July.

Further attempts were planned to solve the problems of the first experiment and create another artificial ring, however the rise of satellite communications proved to be more efficient and practical. Most of the needles returned to Earth’s atmosphere in the 1970’s, although 63 clumps of needles are still known to orbit the planet.
