Standing Up From My Wheelchair in Public

I often bring up the ableist action of harassing/accusing ambulatory wheelchair users (as well as scooter, walker, crutches, and cane users) of “faking” because it’s something that happens ALL the time under the guise of “allyship” that people seem to WANT to remain oblivious to.

A person standing up from a wheelchair or standing without their mobility aid SHOULD NOT be cause for alarm, should not inspire accusations of faking, should not inspire you to say, “it’s a miracle!” in a mocking tone, or to ask me if I should “really be parked here”, or recommendations of weight loss so I won’t “need that chair anymore”, or whispering about how my karma is coming or how I’m going to hell for “playing with a wheelchair”; all comments I’ve received from strangers for just standing in public, getting my chair out of the trunk of my car on my own, or doing something as minimal as riding my chair while being young and smiling.

It’s prejudice; it lacks understanding to how diverse disability is, it uses a singular representation of wheelchair users to judge all wheelchair users. When people are called out on that ableism, those who do it will become defensive and claim to be acting in defense of disabled people because they truly deeply believe in the myth of a “faking disability epidemic", but hear this: non-apparent disabilities/invisible disablities, etc. are REAL disabilities and you are harassing the very people you are claiming to be advocating for.

For me, it is physically very difficult, painful, and risky to walk in the first place, the moments when I am able to, it takes alot of energy and concentration. Emotionally, it takes courage for me to get up from my chair in public; doing so causes anxiety that is parallel to what I would feel as a woman walking alone in the street at night. It’s a situation where I have come to EXPECT harassment and that is not okay. This is not how it should be, getting out of my chair in public should not have to feel like a radical act.

A person who gets up from their wheelchair might have limited ability to walk because they are rehabilitating, have dysautonomia, lung issues, heart issues, chronic pain, hypermobility, fragility of joints or muscles, fatigue, there are so many reasons for being an ambulatory wheelchair user and they come in all ages, sizes, colors, there is no one way, no one look.

Top 10 Btvs Quotes

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is without question the defining piece of media of my life. I watched it as it aired all throughout my adolescence and it profoundly shaped my life and self in so many ways from big to small (hell, even the way I talk and randomly slap together prefixes and suffixes as a phrase called for can be traced back to Buffy).

While it has its issues, the show taught me to believe in myself, to keep going, to treasure my weirdness and the strange and awkward things that don’t fit are the best things about me and what makes me me. It showed me that superheroes come in all shapes and sizes, with and without capes, in and out of the spotlight. It defined the kind of person I wanted to be and I know there’s a whole generation of people that feel the same.

In honor of the 20th anniversary here’s a list of my personal top ten most meaningful Buffy quotes. There are a billion and fifty amazing, quotable moments and these aren’t even necessarily my favorite. These are the ones that meant the most to me, the ones that stuck with me and I think of when I need them.

“No weapons, no friends, no hope. Take all that away and what’s left?”
“Me”

“I’m the thing the monsters have nightmares about.”

"Seize the moment, ‘cause tomorrow you might be dead.”

“To forgive is an act of compassion, Buffy. It’s-it’s… it’s not done because people deserve it. It’s done because they need it.”

“I made it up. I’m making it all up. So what kind of hero does that make me?”

“No guy is worth your life, not ever”

“When I say ‘I love you,’ it’s not because I want you or because I can’t have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try. I’ve seen your kindness and your strength. I’ve seen the best and worst of you. And I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You’re a hell of a woman.”

“I guess I just realized how amazingly screwed up they all are. I mean, really, really screwed up, in a monumental fashion. And they have no purpose that unites them so they just drift around, blundering through life until they die… which they… they know is coming, yet every single one of them is surprised when it happens to them. They’re incapable of thinking about what they want beyond the moment. They kill each other, which is clearly insane. And yet, here’s the thing – when it’s something that really matters, they fight. I mean, they’re lame morons for fighting, but they do. They never… never quit. So I guess I will keep fighting too.”

“They’ll never know how tough it is, Dawnie. To be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near the spotlight and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes because nobody’s watching me. I saw you last night. I see you working here today. You’re not special. You’re extraordinary.”

distorts are nice

it’s honestly… amazing how men seem to struggle with the concept of breasts existing non sexually or not being for their consumption. i made that post about how much of a burden it is physically to have a large chest and how i wish they were small and there are sooooooooo many guys coming to me like “don’t worry, i think boobs of ALL sizes are sexy!” ???????? glad to hear it bryan but how does that help my back pain. like they cannot for a second just separate boobs from sex. not possible. they only exist together as one.

Ha! Answering for the record and for existing followers, not for the like or the $20, although I’ll happily take both.

8. dads getting equality in custody battles

Custody decisions need to be made on a case-by-case basis, based on the best interests of the child. There is no “one size fits all” statement when it comes to something so specific to the individuals involved.

9.  teen vogue writing on politics:

They’re killing it. Others need to follow their lead.

10.  an LGBTQ+ Disney Princess -an LGBTQ+ Disney Prince:

Long overdue!

Disney Pride Graphics - free to use

I hope you find $20 or something : )

I hope so too!

Absent Silhouettes, presences of those who were slain. Exactly, though they come in all different shapes and sizes. The item belongs to its owner, who is now nothing more than a shadowy presence. But you can still fight them, of course. And as you do, it’ll slowly awaken the real you.

A real man

We’ve all heard and talked about what a real woman is. Now let’s talk about a real man. A real man may not have a 6 pack, he may have a 12 pack and that’s OK. A real man is a true gentleman who is kind and caring yet capable of being a beast in the bedroom. A real man comes in all shapes and sizes and may be bald or gray but he knows his worth and he exudes a confidence that is sexy. He will have days just like us where he feels insecure and unsure of himself, but it is up to us to let him know we accept him just as he is and that to us he is perfect. He will not always know the right words to say but he will give it his best, and If he falls short it is up to us to encourage him and lift him up. A real man is honorable and loyal to those he loves. He may not always get it right but that’s OK too. A real man may not want sex every day and a real woman will assure him that it is ok and will hold him and cuddle with him .It is up to us ladies to make them feel like they are everything we need because in truth we would be lost without them. Sometimes a real man just needs a real woman to simply hold his hand and say it’s ok let’s be imperfect together. A big shout out to all the real men out there! Good job guys!

We all come in many different shapes and sizes. No two people are exactly alike. And you know what? It’s natural to not have chiselled abs. It’s alright if one cannot fit into a size zero. It’s all alright. That’s just the way we were created to be. Don’t be so hard on yourself because of the way you look, for there are some things we cannot change. Don’t fight against yourself, and instead, help to lift yourself higher. Accept yourself unconditionally; from your genetics to your depths of your soul.

They met at a dog park.

Which is weird in and of itself because a) Dean hates driving dogs in his baby; b) it’s not even his dog; and c) He’s still pissed at Sam for skipping out on him and their dad only to come back with a dog sized golden retriever he named Bones of all things. Jesus, Sam, you’d think you’re have a little more imagination considering you hid from one of the best damn trackers for two weeks only to name a dog after something we see every day.

Dean sighed to himself. All that and he still has somehow found himself on pooch duty in some dog park in the middle of Illinois of all things.

“He is limping.” Dean turned to the sound of a gruff voice coming from right behind in.

“Yeah well, he’s old.” His comeback was coming out before he got a good look at the guy he was talking to.
