You got me thinking about mermaids and I have a point to add. Gravity on land and in water are very different, that's why living organisms have to developed a support system for the body that can withstand land's gravity before it can function properly (see: fishes->amphibians->land mammals). So if a mermaid becomes human, their internal organs would be crushed by land's gravity unless they do a full body change to that of a human.
