On family in DS9

every star trek show is about a family to an extent, but family is a downright motif in ds9. this show takes the concept of family and dissects it, viscerally and meticulously, scattering the pieces through pretty much every story arc

right off the bat, we see ben sisko at wolf 359, losing his family the way it was. when he takes control of terok nor he’s still grieving jennifer, still learning how to juggle single parenthood with his career, and now he’s inherited this new home that’s all unfamiliar angles and rough edges and doesn’t look much like a home, and a new family that’s all unfamiliar angles and rough edges and doesn’t look much like a family

but they become a family. and this is what ds9 does so brilliantly, because it’s not full house in space. the transition from “crew” to “family” is grueling, and it takes a lot of time and work to maintain throughout the series, but that’s what makes the bonds between these very different people so strong. they all disagree, all the time, about everything, but as the show goes on you see that they’re willing to sacrifice their lives for each other, at times to disobey starfleet and the bajoran government for each other, even to make fools of themselves in the holosuite for each other. it becomes clear how strong this family is when worf arrives and has to figure out how to find a place in it, and later when ezri has to fill the empty seat at its fractured table

but it’s not even just the found-and-carefully-tended variety of family that permeates ds9. so much of the impact of this show comes from relationships between relatives, and it’s complicated and messy and not always happy and not always done right (ahem “doctor bashir i presume” ahem) but it’s so important and so unlike any of the other treks. sisko taking advice from his own father as he watches jake come of age. quark and rom and nog and how sometimes they just can’t stand each other but also how their love for each other defies even the rules of acquisition. kira mourning her father all over again when she loses tekeny, and dealing with her own world being shaken when she learns what her mother did during the occupation. miles and keiko making the station their home despite everything. garak’s misguided willingness to do literally anything for his father’s approval. julian dealing with the fact that his parents constructed him to their specifications. ziyal’s loyalty to dukat despite *gestures broadly at dukat*. ds9 goes out of its way to remind us that the concept of family, like every concept that vast, is morally neutral. it wears good and bad equally well

and it’s this sometimes-good, sometimes-bad mess of family connections, intricate and strong as a spiderweb, that positions our heroes opposite their adversaries. ds9 begins with ben sisko watching the borg (a hivemind devoid of personal connection) rip apart his family. it ends with this new complicated, beautiful family unit facing off against the dominion, led by a goo collective to whom family is a necessarily foreign concept and their army of slave species who are genetically engineered to lose that kind of connection. and ultimately that’s what one of the morals of ds9 is: that having people to share your life with is difficult as hell, but it’s the connections we have with the people we find and keep that make the difficulty worth it, and it’s that pattern repeated on a grand scale that gives us a chance at some kind of unity.

I honestly can’t decide whether

a. you are thrilled that the Cardassian guy who you think is a spy is teaching you spying techniques (look, more proof he’s a spy!), or

b. you are thrilled that you’ve learned spying techniques, period.

Star Trek: DS9 Notes - S7, Vol. 1

BACK IN IT, TO WIN IT: Deep Space Nine Season 7!!!!!

7x01 ‘Image in the Sand’
- Majel Barrett’s voice, omg, I’m home
- COLONEL. Colonel Anastasia Komananov. naahh I’m just teasing — COLONEL KIRA :D

new hair too

- Kira: “I remember when the cult of the Pah-Wraiths used to be a joke. Now those red armbands are appearing all over Bajor. It’s like everyone’s gone crazy.”
Odo: “A lot of people feel abandoned by the Prophets.”
Kira: “Believe me I know how they feel. But that’s no excuse to turn to hate and fear.”
anyway it’s 2017 in America and I’m struck
- whattup I missed Miles and Julian like my own friends
- life’s ambition tbh: serving on a starship alongside Career NCO Chief O’Brien
- turns out Ben can play the piano, and it very figures. he’s currently trying to jazz out his feelings.
- I love this show like a childhood I didn’t have. how is this like, retrograde formative. I’m emosh.
- Admiral Ross: “You still think he’s coming back?”
  Kira: “Don’t you?”
Admiral Ross: “—I’ll be in touch.” ho hoho
- Deep Space Nine is straightforward but not simple. maybe that’s the phrase I’ve been trying to put my finger on for months. because I love a lot of…kinda ornate shows? with a lot of heady stuff going on, all sorts of stylistic experimentation, blah blah blah, and Star Trek…isn’t that. but it’s STRONG. the themes and emotional resonance might be purer for being uncluttered.

Hi! I saw some comments on this about being ignorant and not knowing what atoms are made of. And I realized...I have no clue what atoms are made of. I like to learn. Sorry for being ignorant, but I would really like to know. I don't anything know Physics (hopefully, I will soon). Thank you!

Haha you’d be surprised how many people have asked me what atoms are made of XD. In the nucleus of an atom (which is in the centre) there are protons which have a positive charge and neutrons which are neutral. The ratio of protons:neutrons in the nucleus is roughly 1:1.1 which becomes more clear in heavier atoms. There are also electrons which are essentially just wavelengths with a negative charge that orbit the nucleus. If we consider neutrons and protons to have a mass of 1 (protons would actually be more like 0.9986) then electrons would be 1/1836 of the mass of a proton. Now electrons are a fundamental and are a type of lepton. Protons and neutrons however aren’t fundamental particles and are made up of 3 quarks; a neutron is made of an up and 2 down quarks and protons are made of 2 ups and a down quarks. However the quarks only make up 8 mega electron volts (MeV which is a measurement of mass) while the entire particle weighs about 938MeV (neutrons are about 940 MeV). The rest of the mass comes from a process called quark confinement where quarks in a given hadron (a hadron is any particle made up of 3 quarks) rapidly exchange gluons, which are a type of force carrying particle known as bosons, which hold the quarks together and give the hadron most of its mass.

“Quark,” Odo said at last. He was pleased to see Quark start at the sound of his voice. The Ferengi turned and gazed up at him.

“Where did you come from?” Quark asked, seemingly flustered. “How long have you been standing there?” Odo did not believe that he was acting, but it was difficult to know with certainty; Quark was nothing if not devious.

“I didn’t come from anywhere,” Odo replied. “I’m always by your side, Quark. How else would I be able to catch you in the act of committing a crime?”

“You haven’t caught me yet,” Quark remarked. “Then again, it’s always been my policy not to break the law.”
Odo tried to laugh. It came out as a quick exhalation of breath, a fleeting burst of noise. He had learned much about humor in his life, but it still often required an effort for him to participate and react the way other people did. It was less the result of his changeling nature, he thought, than the philosophical rigidity born of his dedication to justice.

—  The 34th Rule by Armin Shimerman and David R. George III

The ferengi nose nuzzle thing that we see Quark and Rom do with Ishka is literally the cutest shit ever my one regret is that we never see it between the three main ferengi like.

Rom and Nog nose nuzzle when Nog comes back from the Academy to visit.  Quark very hesitantly nose nuzzling Nog when he leaves for the academy because all he can manage is sarcasm and grumpiness but damn it he will miss his nephew.

The rarest of all nose nuzzles: Quark coming down from the nervous high of breaking his baby brother out of prison and realizing they all fucking survived this and there is a brother nose nuzzle.

quark and  bashir but like it’s so gross like they’re super gross husbands, they’re publically affectionate and Kira is like “I should have let that big ass half naked cardassian kill me” and like Jadzia paints that huge oil rococo portrait of the girl on the swing, but it’s bashir and quark and odo in the background trying to kill himself, and then like ishka meeting her son in law and bashir being hte good ferengi wife anfd naked all hte time and chewing up the food and spitting it into quarks mouth and like ‘call me uncle bashir’ to nog and nog is like ‘i will cut off my other limbs’ and also like a combo oomox blowjob at the bar where you just see hands come up and working quarks lobes like they were fucking stress putty and also rom trying desperately to get the bar during all of this while leeta becomes an alcoholic and miles is suffering because this is the suffering episode of o brien but it never ends it never ends

Quark confinement

  • for the purpose of understanding how this works we are going to imagine that something is trying pull an up quark from a proton which is made from 2 ups and 1 down quark.
  • As you try to pull the up quark from the proton a tube of energy is formed between the proton and the up quark.
  • eventually the tube of energy becomes enough for matter-anti-matter creation with an up and an anti-up quark.
  • the up quark goes back to the proton meaning that the proton has always stayed whole and the anti-up quark joins the up quark that was separated from the proton to create a meson.
  • this means that is is impossible to ever have a quark by itself.
  • the quarks themselves are make up 8MeV while quark confinement generates about 930MeV meaning that most of our mass actually comes from quark confinement.

A/N: euphoric-melancholyy has been visiting me and we decided to write another fic together. So, we present to you, this fluffy feelsy Killian perspective piece. Takes place at the end of 4B

He can’t help but grin at the way she moves, uncoordinated and uncaring, dancing around the bathroom while she puts on her make-up. He likes to lean against the doorframe, arms and ankles crossed, and watch. Sometimes she sings, other times she doesn’t. Today seems to be a day that she’ll sing along. Her head bobbing from side to side as she swipes a brush across her cheek, leaving it a tinge pinker. She side glances him through the mirror, biting her lip and grinning. He shakes his head and continues to watch - his blue eyes tracing every curve as she sways her hips to the tune.

“What are you up to, Captain?” her eyes sparkle in the glow of the bathroom light. Her golden hair is tied back neatly, giving him amply view of her face, the curve of her neck. She’s beautiful, his Swan, he thinks maybe the most in the mornings when she’s free and unworried. When there is no need to be the sheriff or the savior. When she can simply be Emma, his Emma.

“Just enjoying the view.” Killian replies with a tilt of his head and a swipe of his tongue across his bottom lip.

She puts down her mascara, turning to face him and, Gods she is gorgeous. “Come here.” She quarks her finger and he can’t help but push off the wall and do as she asks. She may not have lived in the Enchanted Forest, but she’s a bloody siren with a power over him he never thought possible.

It was second nature, to reach and pull her body closer until their knees touch and their breaths mingle in the space between them. “Dance with me.” He feels the low enchanting hum of her voice against his neck as she steps back, taking his hand and lifting his arm up, his wrist twisting as his body bends awkwardly to spin under her. He laughs, loud and carefree, his tone raspy and deep, pulling her into him with a jerk.

“You’re going to make us late, love.” Killian smiles, his hook resting on her hip as they sway.

“Oh, come on, Quark, you’ve done all right for yourself.”
“Oh, what do you know?”
“Quark, I’ve met a lot of Ferengis in my time and the truth is, although some of them may have been more wealthy, I’ve never met one more devious.”
“Would I lie?”
“I guess not. Thank you, Odo. That means a lot to me.”

Odo tells Quark a comforting exaggeration if not outright lie, but that doesn’t mean he’s not genuinely trying to cheer Quark up!  It’s a weirdly sincere and touching moment, for these two…

Also, note that Odo regarding him as a devious threat to security is enough to assuage his regrets over not being wealthy.

okay, so. i had this dream where fenris was danarius's bastard son but he would inherit the money if he married, which was supposed to be a huge joke because WHO WOULD MARRY YOU. so he was like "ok i'm going to steal some money and leave the country." and he chooses hawke's house to steal from. meanwhile hawke is fucked over because her family is under the thumb of gambling drinking uncle gamlen, and

if she got married she’d have some leverage when it comes to getting her inheritance back. so she’s awake in the middle of the night and meets Fenris on the staircase and is like “who are you why are you doing this?” and then they’re like “you know it would piss our families off so much if we got married”

and anyway, i dreamed a fenhawke regency marriage of convenience au. (also mages existed even though it was the regency?) and then i dreamed i told you about it and when i woke up i was like “yessss. gotta tell quark.” anyway have a Good
