So SoonerCon was absolutely amazing and I had the best time, but there was one panel I went to on Saturday that made me really mad. It was called “Strong Women Are Star Wars.” Sounds amazing, right? Timothy Zahn was going to be on the panel, and I was really excited to go celebrate the women of Star Wars and hear Zahn’s thoughts about it (considering he’s created a few of those strong women).
But as soon as it started, it became clear that it was going to be very different than I had envisioned. Almost all the rest of the six panelists (other than Zahn and one woman who ran a geek podcast) knew very little about Star Wars. One man freely admitted that he didn’t even like Star Wars, and he and another man proceeded to loudly vomit words for about 70% of the entire panel even though they had nothing of import to say (figures). The other two women who didn’t know Star Wars very well talked for about 25% of the rest of the time, and while they had some good things to say, most of it was negative — the opposite of a celebration of the women in Star Wars. Zahn’s comments were incredible, thoughtful, and illuminating, and I would have loved to hear more from him, but he was barely given a chance to speak (nor was the lovely podcast lady).
The entire thing turned into a “let’s bash Star Wars” session, and trust me, while I know there are problems with my favorite franchise, and I expected and looked forward to some discussion about the need for feminism in Star Wars, this was terrible. They basically came to the conclusion that Strong Women Aren’t Star Wars — except for Leia; she’s cool, I guess. I came out of there fuming, as did many others I talked to. It was a low point in an otherwise amazing weekend and I’m still mad about it
Hey i just wanted to rant about otayuri for a second? It's not a hate speech, don't worry, but it's such a complicated to ship? Like, I can be pretty chill when it comes to like fluffy stuff between them, I don't have a problem I honestly think it's really cute but like the smut is just? unsettling?? because yuri isn't legal yet but still they're only 3 years apart and otabek is only 18??? but like it still makes me feel weird, like i don't hate people that ship it, i lowkey do too, but chill??
hey there! first off, i can see where you’re coming from a little bit. sometimes shipping can get a bit weird when you have mixed feelings about a ship or only like it in certain contexts. and i don’t think it’s wrong that you like looking at fluff pieces for them, but not smutty fics/art. that’s a choice and it sounds like you’re pretty set that this is what you like. i think that is all well and good.
and it’s also okay to only lowkey ship something. tbh, that’s how i am about a lot of yoi ships outside of victuuri. i lowkey ship them, will occasionally reblog an art of them or two, but i don’t like, dedicate my entire blog to them. most of the content on my blog is victuuri, and there’s no other reason for that other than it’s the ship that really got my attention in the show and that’s the one i want to pay most attention to.
the only thing i’d disagree with you with though is technically yuri is actually of a consenting age now. sixteen is the age of consent in russia, which officially makes him old enough to consent to sexual situations.and correct me if i’m wrong, the age of consent in japan is thirteen, so depending on if you’re going off the laws of the land it was created in, or the laws of the character’s homeland, it technically would be legal in both countries.
that doesn’t mean you have to engage in nsfw content for them just because it’s legal though. if it makes you uncomfortable because it doesn’t follow certain american consent laws, or just don’t like them in that type of situation, i personally feel that’s your right as long as you aren’t policing what others do and how they engage with this ship. for example, i usually don’t go seeking out nsfw content because as a sex neutral/borderline repulsed asexual person, it kinda really squicks me out. but i also realize that just because it squicks me out doesn’t give me the right to tell others not to make nsfw content, if that makes any sense at all.
idk fam, lol. i feel like we’re kinda in the same boat here. it’s a kinda lowkey ship for me and that’s why it doesn’t show up on my blog a lot, or nor do i tag my otabek x yuri posts ota///yuri for the most part. i really enjoy the friendship aspects they have in the show right now, and personally need a little bit more content between them for me to go from lowkey shipper to highkey shipper, haha. and that goes for like, all of my other side ships too, like chrisichit (did we ever find a name for that ship?) or milasara too. (in context, i wouldn’t say i really began going hardcore for vic///tuuri until episode 6 or 7. it takes awhile for me to begin shipping things, and this goes for a lot of shows. i’m working through fma:b right now and honestly only began really hardcore shipping ed and winrey in episode 22.)
tl;dr basically i am really okay with people shipping things how they want as long as everyone stays in their lane and doesn’t try to do this new ‘fandom policing’ thing where they dictate who can and can’t ship things.
some of the things i've been told since coming out as asexual in 2015
-“you’re too pretty to be asexual”
-“you just haven’t met the right guy yet”
-“you’ll change your mind once you’re in a relationship”
-“if you ever get in a ‘relationship’ your partner will just cheat on you so he can have sex”
-“is there something wrong with you?”
-“it’s just a hormonal thing. doctors can help you fix that”
-“so… you’re gay?”
-“here’s the name of my doctor you should see him about your homone levels”
-“that’s not a real thing”
-“there must be something wrong with you”
-“you’re probably gay but too scared to tell anyone”
-“i can fix that ;)”
-“i called my pastor and he said he’s going to put you on the prayer chain”
-“the bible doesn’t necessarily say that asexuality is wrong, but it’s wrong because it’s an identity thing. you should just identify as a child of God, regardless of whether or not you actually get these feelings”
-“you’re basically just straight”
-“so you’re just gonna be alone forever?”
-“so you’ve never loved anyone?”
-“ohmygosh is this because of your past trauma?!”
-“i’m so sorry, this must be because of all you’ve been through”
-“you don’t look asexual”
-“so you probably masturbate a lot then…”
-“asexuals aren’t part of the lgbtqia community… the A stands for 'ally’. stop pretending like asexuals are descriminated against”
-“isn’t that a plant thing?”
I don't watch voltron (I plan to but haven't had the time yet), so could you please explain the sheith discourse? Idk anything about any of the characters specifically, but just based on appearances I've always liked that better than klance.
Oh my sweet summer child, I wish you well if you ever decide to brave through this fandom hell. Okay so I’ll sum this up because honestly I do not wish to talk about this discourse anymore.
Everything started shortly after the show aired on Netflix on June 10th. Due to Keith’s and Shiro’s close bond, familiarity with one another and always attempting to protect each other, they became a popular ship. So popular in fact that Josh Keaton, Shiro’s voice actor, acknowledged this on his blog and even coined the name for the ship: sheith.
It didn’t take long until he and Neil Kaplan, Zarkon’s voice actor, started mentioning sheith on their twitters as well. To top it off, Chris Palmer, who directs the show, also made this Shiro drawing with the description “Shiro loves you, baby” and tagged “he is looking at Keith.” Honestly with so many people involved with the show (even if the VAs aren’t directly involved, it was still nice) showing support for the ship, and considering Montgomery and dos Santos who previously worked on The Legend of Korra are producers in Voltron, a lot of people believe they could become canon like Korra and Asami.
However, many fans interpreted it as proof that Shiro is factually 25 and the other three are 17 and claim that Shiro/Paladin ships are pedophilia, wrong, incorrect and a bunch of other nasty things. They use the video as confirmation and refuse each and any other evidence to contrary, even when it comes from the same people that were in the video. Some even attack the voice actors over it, which is why Josh Keaton stopped talking about ships altogether on Twitter. The truth is, most people before and after the video saw and still see Hunk, Keith and Lance as being 18-19 and Shiro as 20-22 at most, not 25 since he doesn’t even look that old.
Tbh the whole thing is a mess, the only thing we know for sure is that the creators themselves apparently never gave this too much thought in the first place because they wanted people to see the characters as being the age they believe them to be. And now they either refuse to talk about it anymore or contradict each other in what they have to say about it, but antis refuse to stop and continue harassing shippers and the ship tags daily with violent threats and name calling.
Incidentally, NYCC is coming up this week and the same three crew members will there. It is speculated that more fans will ask them about the ages and I’m already dreading the next wave of shitstorm coming this friday.
