Come Back, Charleston Blue: A 1972 Blaxploitation classic, based on the hardboiled mystery novels by Chester Himes. This sequel to Cotton Comes to Harlem also features Himes’ famous Harlem detectives, Grave Digger Ed and Coffin Jones. In this movie, they investigate the supposed re-appearance of a long-dead gangster, whose legend is electrifying Harlem; along the course of their investigation, the movie reveals a fascinating cross-section of life in Harlem in the 1950s (when the book was written) and the 1970s (when the movie was filmed). This is EXACTLY what I look for in all forms of historical fiction: that microcosm of a world in transition, lives as they are lived in a specific place and time in the crosscurrents of culture and history.
