So my white friend says she experiences racism because she's white. Facts: she went to schools where she is the minority all her life, her current school is mostly asians, teenagers there are the type to joke about misgendering and trigger memes. Assumptions: she probably has low self esteem as the youngest sibling with a large age difference to the older sibling. She says feels guilty everyday just for being white, and accepts she has privilege, but still insists she experiences racism. How do

I explain to her it isn’t racism, and that she shouldn’t feel guilty? Or is she right?

Hey, sorry for the late reply!

Well, it seems those teens need to be educated on some things. But as for your white friend…TL;DR will be at the bottom.

She shouldn’t feel guilty for being white but rather address being white and having white privilege (which she does and that is good). However, white people don’t experience racism because it has to do with a combination of many things such as:

  • History of oppression
  • Oppression by institutional and systematic discrimination through social, political, economical, and other means
  • Power to control society and enforce oppression, or the lack of power
  • And etc.

A white person’s feelings being hurt through stereotypes or assumptions is NOT racism. This is known as prejudice and does not have the institutional or systematic oppression behind it. Racism is not the same as prejudice so white people need to stop confusing the two. This isn’t to say prejudice is okay but they’re not even close to being the same.

The reason why white people can only feel racial prejudice at most and NOT racism is because society as a whole still benefits white people while discriminating against everyone else who isn’t white.

TL;DR: Your friend may experience prejudice from individuals at school but the rest of society and all the institutions that make it are not going to discriminate against her simply because she’s white. Therefore, she doesn’t experience racism but does experience prejudice.

What is the worst thing you remeber eating ever?

Well…there’s a metric here, because my definition of “worst” is different. I don’t like food that bites back, that is to say, chemical flavors. I don’t like foods preserved with lye or sulphur, are very high in ammonia. I also don’t like the heavy metals. So I suppose the list includes

Thousand Year Old Eggs: I’ve tried. I just cannot stand them.

Purple Pears: Had them twice, and hated them both times

Concoctions with arsenic, lead, mercury etcetera, that used to be quite popular, some of which were horrifying combinations of things.

Stinging nettle soup: not fond of the taste

Hakarl: or rotted shark

And really there are a few cheeses that I don’t like. Not the ones that smell like corpses, mind you, because they don’t bother me. It’s the ones that stink of the same bacteria a halitosis sufferer tackles that I simply cannot manage.

I suppose there are a few other things. There was a sort of…tossed dish? Like a stir fry? It was made using bones and other things and while not disgusting, I found the dish tedious. Firstly, I like vegetables, but not cooked into nothingness and flavored with hooves. They’re hard enough to eat with my teeth already, and here you’ve given me chunks of bone to navigate too. Oh and wait, it isn’t cooked with enough heat for the marrow or calcium to slough off and incorporate? Lovely. Pointless dish.

I hope that helps.

The future broken Takumi...

Okay, I’m not sure if someone discussed this matter before but I’ve always loved how we see Takumi so different in the future sequences of NANA.

The once domineering Takumi Ichinose is in the future more subdued, more wistful and melancholic than we ever knew him. He dotes on Ren and Satsuki, seems genuinely pained by the estrangement from Hachi and hopes to have her back. But he thinks she will never forgive him. Now there has been many theories as to the reasons for the future Takumi-Hachi estrangement, and as far as we know, it could be his betrayal with Reira, but I don’t want to write about this here.

What i want to talk about is the reason for the Takumi softening that we witness. It could be a combination of things. It could be general maturity. It could be the reality of being a father. And more importantly it could be that he simply put things into perspective after Ren died.

But there’s something else…

I personally think the reason why Takumi truly regretted the decisions he made to protect Trapnest is because of Reira. I think only Reira could have disillusioned and influenced Takumi this much. It is said more than once in the flashbacks and current sequences that Takumi’s main motivation for making Trapnest was this:

It is implied in the flashback that this was not just the inspiration to start Trapnest but also one of the (if not the only) major Takumi motivations in the life he wanted to build for himself despite his father’s cruelty. He put all his hope on that one thing he thought only he could do. Which is a ridiculous dream of course because it is entirely based on another person. But Takumi always mistakenly thought he owned Reira, she was his literal songbird. That’s why I think the thing that hurt him the most and changed his attitude in the future was Reira finally finding her autonomy and independence after Ren died.

The Takumi spell over Reira was already being removed before Ren’s incident. Look at Takumi’s reaction when Reira started for once to challenge his illusion:

Takumi doesn’t usually get Yazawa’s vacant eyes and blank background treatment as do many other characters. He takes himself too seriously for that, but in this one incident, the world he fought so hard to build was starting to crumble, and Reira knows that. She knows that very well.

That’s why I think it was mainly Reira’s doing. If Reira, after accepting the reality that Ren died, told Takumi that the one who actually pushed her voice to the limit was Ren’s guitar and not Takumi, that since Ren’s dead, she will never sing for him anymore… I think that would have been the breaking point for Takumi. From then on, he would have started to see everything differently and regretted all those choices he made that hurt so many people and did nothing.

Reira and Ren’s relationship in the manga is one of the strongest and healthiest. Ren was always looking out for Reira and wanting to find someone who could save her (for sometime he wanted Yasu to do it)…He never realised that it was he, Ren, who was saving her all along, even by dying.

one of my favourite nice relaxing happy videos and it combines TWO things from my childhood that i loved!!!

honestly i love the concept of hunk just. making jokes about galra keith all the time now. bc he knows keith is worried about allura (and possibly others) hating him now so hunk is determined to make it seem like it’s not a big deal by constantly making light of it.

  • hunk: [points to a galra drone] keith is that your brother
  • keith: [walks into the room]
    hunk: [starts blasting E.T.]
  • “his parents may still be part of the empire”
hunk: oh my god keith what if zarkon is your mom
  • pidge: dude i’d love to see inside area 51
hunk: same [turns to keith] can you hook us up?
  • hunk: what kind of weird alien stuff are you up to?
    keith: i’m…eating breakfast…
    hunk: man aliens are wild
  • [on a purple planet]
hunk: keith, you’ll blend in with the scenery
    keith: i’M STILL NOT PURPLE
  • hunk: hey siri are galra allergic to taking showers
