September 25, 2015 - Collared Puffbird (Bucco capensis)
These puffbirds are found around the Amazon Basin in northern South America. They are sit-and-wait hunters, pouncing on small animals that live on the forest floor. They feed on insects and frogs, as well as small snakes and other reptiles. This method of hunting has earned them the nicknames “lazy bird” and “sleeper.” Though closely related to jacamars, they do not have the iridescent feathers of their more colorful relatives.
