collapse of civilization as we know it

  • 2016: Trump wins both Republican primary and general election.

  • 2074: US reclaims Anchorage.
  • 2077: Total Nuclear war breaks out between the US and China, destroying civilization as we know it. The only people who survive do so in great underground vaults. Fallout is real.
Panem’s History?

So…this is not from a particular spot in the books, just a question reading THG books make me think about whenever I read them.

Panem is said to have formed from the ashes of an apocalypse in North America. And I’ve ALWAYS wondered what cased this apocalypse it could have been, and if Panem is truly the only surviving civilization?

From what I remember, neither had been touched on. Correct me on that if I am wrong, and I very well may be…but. Still, what happed to North America that CHANGED the map? Personally, I only have ideas, but I want to see if we can get talking about this CX.

If I had to say, for some reason, I’d say it was something like Nuclear War(again, this is a thought only, I honestly have little to no evidence supporting this). My only reasoning for this is that there’s not much else, short of Global Warming melting the ice cap- at which point Earth would be inhabitable- besides Nuclear Weapons that would change the geology like it apparently had by the time we are introduced to it.

I don’t think anything- like pandemics, economics collapse or other apocalypse- causing situation would make the sea rise and change the shape of the earth.

Also it makes me wonder weather or not Panem was the only surviving group of people? The population of Panem, from what I’ve seen is around a million. There are 7 billion people on earth now…perhaps there is another civilization that survived?

Like I said, I honestly wanted to hear other opinion on this! For something so big about how the setting and country the story is set up in, we know surprisingly little about it? Forgive bad grammar and spelling, this is being typed SUPER late, and I tried to edit but I am honestly tired.

Exclusive: Marvel’s New Iron Man Is a Black Woman

(source)

Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis talks the creation of Riri Williams, who will take over for Tony Stark

There’s a new Iron Man. Well, Iron Man for now. She’s still working on the name. The events at the end of the comic book event series Civil War II will result in Tony Stark stepping out of the Iron Man suit and a new character, Riri Williams, taking over, Marvel tells TIME. (Note: Tony’s departure doesn’t mean you know the end to Civil War II yet.)

Riri is a science genius who enrolls in MIT at the age of 15. She comes to the attention of Tony when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm. Creator and Iron Man writer Brian Michael Bendis spoke exclusively to TIME about the creation of Riri Williams with book artist Stefano Caselli and Marvel’s increasingly diverse cast of characters.

TIME: How did you come up with the character of Riri Williams?

Bendis: One of the things that stuck with me when I was working in Chicago a couple of years ago on a TV show that didn’t end up airing was the amount of chaos and violence. And this story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life—just random street violence—and went off to college was very inspiring to me. I thought that was the most modern version of a superhero or superheroine story I had ever heard. And I sat with it for awhile until I had the right character and the right place.

As we’ve been slowly and hopefully very organically adding all these new characters to the Marvel Universe, it just seemed that sort of violence inspiring a young hero to rise up and act, and using her science acumen, her natural born abilities that are still raw but so ahead of where even Tony Stark was at that age, was very exciting to me.

What have we seen of her so far in the Iron Man comics?

In the latest issue of Iron Man, Tony is in a lab talking to himself, and he’s already aware that there’s some student at M.I.T. that’s reverse-engineered one of his old armors all by herself in her dorm room. He’s aware of her immediately.

What’s been the reception of the character so far (before this announcement)?

Thankfully because of my involvement in the creation of Miles Morales and Jessica Jones and some other characters, it’s getting the benefit of the doubt from even the most surly fans. There are fans who say, “Show us the new stuff,” and then there are fans who say, “Don’t do anything different from when I was a kid.” So when you’re introducing new characters, you’re always going to have people getting paranoid about us ruining their childhood.

I’ve been down this road with Miles Morales, Jessica Jones, Maria Hill. I knew I was in good hands with Mike Deodato and other artists who are helping visualize Riri.

Marvel Comics’ diverse new cast has stirred some controversy among a subset of fans.

Some of the comments online, I don’t think people even realize how racist they sound. I’m not saying if you criticize you’re a racist, but if someone writes, “Why do we need Riri Williams we already have Miles?” that’s a weird thing to say. They’re individuals just like Captain America and Cyclops are individuals. All I can do is state my case for the character, and maybe they’ll realize over time that that’s not the most progressive thinking.

But increasingly we see less and less of that. Once Miles hit, and Kamala Khan hit and female Thor hit—there was a part of an audience crawling through the desert looking for an oasis when it came to representation, and now that it’s here, you’ll go online and be greeted with this wave of love.

I think what’s most important is that the character is created in an organic setting. We never had a meeting saying, “we need to create this character.” It’s inspired by the world around me and not seeing that represented enough in popular culture.

Why did it take so long to turn the Avengers from a team of mostly white dudes into a more diverse array of characters?

Talking to any of the older creators, it’s the thing they said they wish they’d done more of—reflecting the world around them. It just wasn’t where the world was at at that time. Now, when you have a young woman come up to you at a signing and say how happy she is to be represented in his universe, you know you’re moving in the right direction.

I don’t want to spoil anything for fans—

More people are going to be upset that they think they know the ending to Civil War II now than anything we just talked about. But I can tell you just because we’re hearing what we’re saying doesn’t know you mean how Civil War II ends. We’re not telling you the end, at all.

What led Tony Stark to a place where he’s stepping out of the suit?

We’re in the middle of a very big Tony Stark storyline—actually three storylines converging. His best friend died, his company is collapsing and he’s finding out who his biological parents were all at the same time. That’s stressful for a character who is wired the way Tony is wired and has dependency issues the way Tony does.

Tony is also a master at not paying attention to the thing that’s most important and distracting himself with Avengers stuff. How that all shakes out such that Tony is no longer in the armor? You’ll have to wait to find out for the end of Civil War II. But it does create a path or Riri Williams, who Tony will know and will be interacting with very shortly in the comics.

How do they meet?

One of the things Tony does to distract himself from all the things going on in his life is he goes to find this young woman who is flying around the middle of America in an armor that’s not completely made to try to find out what her deal is.

It’s hard to subtly fly around in Iron Man armor.

You imagine that Tony has Iron Man armor on his Google Alerts.

He’s also aware that this young woman is flying by him in terms of how quickly she’s doing it. Her brain is maybe a little better than his. She looks at things from a different perspective that makes the armor unique. He can’t help but go maybe I should buy her out.

anonymous asked:

When do you think the United States (and other parts of the Western world) will finally collapse? What will happen afterwards?

These are interesting and important questions. Entire books have been written on the topic, so I’ll be brief in my opinion here.

We can look to the past for some but not all of the answers. And we can look at the data on hand for some but not all of the answers. First some data. Let’s look at The West (Europe) first. Information below is:

1. UN estimates for population of Africa vs. Europe
2. 2015 Fragile State index
3. 2014 Corruption index
4. Average national IQs
5. Inbreeding rates

From just these 5 pieces of information we can say:

1. Africans will continue to overpopulate and continue to push north. It’s their closest escape route. They’re doing it now, en masse, by the tens of thousands, coming over in boats from Libya and being dumped into Sicily or elsewhere. These are migrants (not refugees). No one wants to address the problem or look into the future because it’s too bleak.

2. All of the problems you see in infographics 2 through 5 will be imported into Europe. The old axiom applies: You can take the cat out of the jungle, but you can’t take the jungle out of the cat. Letting people with average IQs of 70 or 80 into your high-IQ country will not “make them smarter” or “make them more integrated” into a modern society. This importation of societal pathologies will increase everywhere its brought into Europe: crime, domestic abuse, add’l prison populations, increased use of government welfare.

Europe is doomed. Give it another 2 generations (~40 years), and Europe will be on the brink.

For the USA, we’re fortunately protected by oceans. In some cases this doesn’t matter. The wide-open southern border brings a host of issues: human and drug trafficking, diseases, anarchy along the border counties. We’re seeing this now. Other problems with the USA are the crumbling infrastructures, a spiritual void/loss of faith in institutions, and changing demographics and work structures. Look at the bulldozing of Detroit to see what may happen in another 10 or 20 years elsewhere in the country. Look at the Flint, Michigan water crisis to see what may happen elsewhere in the country. Ask your average American “What’s happening in Detroit?” or “What’s happening in Flint, Michigan?” and you’ll likely get a blank stare. This isn’t accidental. This is on purpose. An informed citizenry is an aware citizenry is an alarmed citizenry. (I actually had a friend reply to my Detroit question that “They’re going through  a renaissance.” I laughed at him. “A renaissance,” I said. “Is that what they’re calling bulldozing one third of one of the largest cities in the United States now?”)

Truth is hard, and It’s easier to fool ourselves. We like it that way.

As in the past, it will be a slow decline. That’s the best I can hope for. So, look for “more of the same.” More crumbling infrastructure (bridge collapses, sinkholes in cities, contaminated water supplies), more illegal alien crime and imprisonment (Arizona and New Mexico now have illegal aliens in their prisons at ~40%; what does it look like at 80%; federal level is now 27%–what’s it look like at 80%), more backlogged courts, more corruption from local to national level, more debt, more military excursions, more, more, more–until the middle can’t hold. I mean: it all starts to crack at the seams. Both inwardly (inside the US) and outwardly (overseas).

You may not hear much about it, though. So, you’ll need to look for it.

Just like in 406 AD at the Crossing of the Rhine, citizens around the Roman Empire had no clue what happened, or that that incident was a bump in their road, so today we’re mostly asleep.

And we like it that way.

So, watch for societal and more importantly civilizational “bumps”. A civilizational bump includes:

  • Summer 2015 when Turkey released millions of migrants north into Europe
  • Early 2000s, 9/11 and invasion of US into ME
  • Late 1980s/early 1990s, the collapse of the USSR

Watch for these types of events, which can really only be placed in full context by looking back. But as humans we live forward.

I try not to get too worked up about current events. It was Toynbee or Spengler who said, Don’t feel bad for the collapsed civilizations of the past; feel bad for the individual people who lived during those times.

I think we’re living in “those times” right now. I know Europe is. The U.S. is a little bit better protected, but we have all sorts of internal rot. What it looks like “on the other side” is anyone’s guess.

I think the EU will continue to fracture/splinter.

I think the US is in better shape of NOT splintering into separate federated states. But some suggest it will do that. If you see any single state or portion of a state in the US vote to secede…that’s a civilizational bump. We’re near that point now.

In both cases (Europe and US) “society” will continue, as it does. Cultures will be absorbed and re-absorbed and “born new.” An interesting thread running through all this of course is “the Muslim issue.”

Question is: How will The West ultimately react to it?

Answer is: We’re seeing it now, all over Europe, and all over the US, played out in real time. Conflict. And more conflict.

The US with its brilliant constitutional form of government has a much better chance of surviving than Europe. But it may be unrecognizable 50 years from now. Just like we, now, look back on the US of decades ago and hardly recognize it. It’s a dream, a vision from a past horizon.

Live now, engage now, with your loved ones and your community. For empires are made of such things. Family. Community.

And pray.

i always catch ppl talkin bout money and how it makes the world go round, but i truly believe that only trust is essential for society to function… whats the point of money if our civilization is about to collapse & i know trust is a strong word - its overloaded with many meanings & sometimes it confuses people, but… we really need to trust not only people, but institutions and systems, we need mechanisms to induce trust - we need security, but a lot of people find security in money so whats the truth

An Explanation of Evangelion's Instrumentality

If you’ve watched Evangelion, the thought “What in the living HELL is Instrumentality, anyways?” We’ve all been there- and hopefully I can clear some of these things up.

Rare video from Buenaventura Durruti’s funeral in Barcelona attended by half a million anarchists.

Rare newsreel footage from José Buenaventura Durruti Dumange’s (14 July 1896 – 20 November 1936) funeral in Barcelona, attended by more than half a million anarchists.

He died on 20 November 1936, at the age of 40, in a makeshift operating theatre set up in what was formerly the Ritz Hotel. The bullet was lodged in the heart; the diagnosis recorded was “death caused by pleural haemorrhage”. The doctors wrote a report in which the path of the bullet and the character of the wound was recorded but not the calibre of the bullet, since no autopsy was performed to remove it.

His driver’s gave the following testimonial about the events that lead to his death: “We passed a little group of hotels which are at the bottom of this avenue [Avenida de la Reina Victoria] and we turned towards the right. Arriving at the big street, we saw a group of militiamen coming towards us. Durruti thought it was some young men who were leaving the front. This area was completely destroyed by the bullets coming from the Clinical Hospital, which had been taken during these days by the Moors and which dominated all the environs. Durruti had me stop the car which I parked in the angle of one of those little hotels as a precaution. Durruti got out of the auto and went towards the militiamen. He asked them where they were going. As they didn’t know what to say, he ordered them to return to the front. The militiamen obeyed and Durruti returned towards the car. The rain of bullets became stronger. From the vast red heap of the clinical hospital, the Moors and the Guardia Civil were shooting furiously. Reaching the door of the machine, Durruti collapsed, a bullet through his chest.”

— It is we the workers who built these palaces and cities, here in Spain and in America and everywhere. We, the workers. We can build others to take their place. And better ones! We are not in the least afraid of ruins. We are going to inherit the earth. There is not the slightest doubt about that. The bourgeoisie might blast and ruin its own world before it leaves the stage of history. We carry a new world here, in our hearts. That world is growing in this minute.

Last of Us Re-Imagined as a TV Series

When mind controlling fungus begins infecting humans, society and civilization as we know it collapses. The Last of Us follows Joel, a man with few moral lines left to cross, and the journey he embarks on to salvage what’s left of mankind. Adapted for viewing instead of playing, this “Cinematic Playthrough” is both an experiment in storytelling, and a call to action for developers to include more user-generated-content tools within their games that would supplement projects like this one.

This cinematic playthrough is a project designed to push a common and highly demanded (but overly abundant) type of content, YouTube playthroughs, into a more artistic, cinematic, and accessible space.

This Cinematic Playthrough Series is a lone effort by me that requires dozens of hours put into filming, editing, rendering and uploading.

All That Is, the infinite creation, the fabric of existence, CHOSE YOU, chose that you should exist, chose you - consciously chose you. You are, in that way, therefore blessed, and we would have you understand that simply because of the fact that you exist you are blessed, for you are created out of divined material, out of divine light, you are the infinite creator, and your existence was a conscious decision, a conscious thing, a conscious choice. Act in like manner, be of like mind, respect yourselves, love yourselves unconditionally, for out of unconditional love were you created and out of unconditional love shall you create anything you desire.

Begin to feel the energy of your interlinking with all thought forms, all consciousness, all civilizations, all eyes, all ideas, all minds, all hearts, all souls. All spirit is one, and you are one within that seed, within that pool. Know that you are the fabric and the essence of the galactic energy, not one of you in that sense can be removed from the matrix without the collapse of the entire structure, you are integral in that way, you are essential in that way.

And we would have you understand, that because you are interconnected in this way, because everything you do has impact within the entirety of creation, that you deserve to exist in this way, and you deserve to be the fullest individual you can imagine yourself to be, that you deserve to manifest all the things you can conceive of, that you deserve the existence you have been given or it would not have been granted to you, that you deserve all the love you can imagine, because love is what you are made out of, that you deserve all the light you can create in your life, because light is what you are made out of.

I want Nomad in the MCU.

Perspective:

I was born in the Reagan years, when labor unions were being busted by the dozens and mental health facilities, admittedly a lot of badly managed ones, but all mental health care was gutted. AIDS was considered a ‘good riddance’ to the queer population, and social support for the needy was being twisted into a disgusting crutch rather than charity toward one’s fellow man.

Nuclear proliferation colored my early childhood. I think mine was the last round of kids with nuclear bomb drills- not that hiding under your desk would save you, but you can’t tell a six year old that.

The Berlin Wall came down when I was seven years old. Democracy won, they said. But then the oil wars started. I barely remember America ever being at peace.

Clinton (the husband) brought economic stability and some measure of calm, but also further dismantled the social safety net and pushed queer people deeper into legalized disenfranchisement.

The internet got big, though. So it kinda seems like a light at the end of the tunnel? But then we got Dubya. Then 9/11. Then more Dubya. Then Obama! then racist backlash to Obama. Then Occupy, and #BLM, then ageism and racism and kyriarchy continuing to win, personified by TRUMP-

because people my age and slightly younger may protest, but we don’t vote.

And that’s my three decades of life as an American.

(Three decades. I am basically the same age as Steve, ya know.)

SO:  If the UTTER BULLSHIT that aligns the MCU’s Civil War pushed Steve out of the stars and stripes and into the blue and gold, I would be fucking delighted. It just rings true to me for the character, as, like when the Nixon administration’s collapse facilitated it in the late 70s, Marvel was mirroring current events of the day.

The current events of our day are, like in CACW, the erosion of civil liberties and the xenophobic paranoia against those perceived different from the in-group. This is Steve’s modus operandi. Always has been. It is literally why Steve Rogers was created, by Jewish guys speaking out against the Holocaust.

This is why he exists.

I think it’s doable, too, look:

We have Team Cap to give us the push Steve needs:

And this time- He’d have his buddies* with him.

(*Boyfriends.)

anonymous asked:

what might be involved in post apocaplyptic clothes? i want to get involved but idk where to start!

There’s so much you can do! Look to post apocalyptic media for inspiration- Fallout, Mad Max, etc all feature a very grungy, distressed look, but there’s a ton of room for self expression and creativity. Imagine how you would dress 50 years on from the collapse of civilization.

Personally, when I style a look like this I like to imagine a character and then create an outfit around them by imagining their surroundings. Come up with a backstory and find clothes to match- or look through your wardrobe until you can create a narrative. Maybe you have to wear all your clothes at once because you’re a nomad. Maybe you’re in a rebel tribe, with markings and patches to match. Maybe the Nike logo becomes the symbol for your splinter faction one day. Maybe you live in the hot desert and hunt mutated insects. Maybe you live in a treehouse in the rainy woods. Maybe you work for a secret organization in the ruins of New York. Maybe there are like 5 people left in the world and you’re mostly all naked and hunt with sticks. All these things can affect what you would wear! (I hope someone submits a naked look tbh)

As far as actually interpreting those things through clothing, look for the rattiest stuff you own, because the leading assumption of the style is that the standard channels of clothing production and sale broke down long ago with the collapse of civilization as we know it.

You can DIY stuff to make it look more distressed, and I have a lot of pieces like that in my wardrobe. There’s a general atmosphere of toughness and survival based ruggedness to the style that can be interpreted in many ways. It can still work with flowy layers and skirts if you balance it out with heavy boots or a jacket. Dark neutrals seem the most common but you should be able to make it work with literally anything if you can make it cohesive. So you made a stealth run at an empty Goodwill but all you found were SpongeBob nurse smocks and hammer pants before a rival faction broke in to start a gunfight? Sounds convincing to me.

Makeup wise, you can go makeup free (I mean, if the world ends I don’t think Sephora’s going to ship to my house) or smear dirt or war paint on your face for that “just killed a venomous mutant rabbit” look.

You know why I like this style? I imagine I’m practicing dressing for the inevitable future. I have this constant nagging feeling that I’m actually going to see this shit happen in my lifetime. I hope not, but might as well mentally prepare for the worst, right?

Update

Hi guys, I’m writing this update because I know there are several people on this site that are concerned about me and my safety, and also the safety of my people in Venezuela. Yesterday the military put the city into a siege, and they killed at least five people that we know of, five people who were protesting peacefully. The military is backing up a group of semi-organized crime who have firearms at their disposition. I repeat: the military is not helping the people. They’re killing them. Protests went on until this morning at six, but things have calmed down a bit since then. The city of Tachira has been in thr dark for a day and a half. They cut off their Internet. As you know, the only way that we can be aware of what’s happening in the streets is via Twitter, Facebook and Internet live streams, so this is reason for a lot of concern. The government is shutting us down. There’s only a matter of time until they cut off all internet suppliers in the rest of the country. The mobile networks will collapse. This is no longer a game, it feels like a civil war here. It’s 11 am and things have been quiet, almost too calm. We really don’t know what’s happening anymore. I’m at work, so when I get home and if I do have Internet service, I’ll be online to answer other asks people have sent me. You guy’s support mean the world to me. Thank you again for your concern.

Lora “ I should not fear childbirth for reasons other than labor pains” and Rena with baby Obatallah. All of us walked out of class and work suddenly to make a statement that we are no longer sleeping, we are no longer blind. We know that we have been lied to and we will no longer let the truth be hidden. We will shout it until our lungs collapse.

All That Is, the infinite creation, the fabric of existence, CHOSE YOU, chose that you should exist, chose you - consciously chose you.
