* World Travel Tips : Cinco De Mayo Special: A Tequila Lover's Guide to Mexico Hotels and Hot Spots
Travel Tips - Happy Cinco de Mayo! Hipmunk pulled together a list of our favorite Mexican destinations that will optimize your holiday tequila tasting expeditions whether you decide to hop on the next flight South of the border or craft yourself a flight of tequila at home. Pass around that salt and lime! Vamanos!
As the birthplace of the drink that bears its name, tequila’s history and importance in creating this delicious beverage has earned the town a World Heritage Sight stamp of approval. Technically, Mexican tequila can only be produced in Tequila, so this is the ideal place to start your drinking and stay at local accommodations like Hotel Boutique La Cofradia or Hotel Solar de las Animas. Jose Cuervo and Sauza distilleries are both here, so you’ve got some margarita-making options.
If you’re looking for access to distilleries, but want to stay in a larger city, Guadalajara is a great jumping off point for your tequila adventures. Only two hours from the town of Tequila, make a day trip to distilleries from your home base at Hotel Demetria or Aloft Guadalajara. Or you can stay at The Westin Guadalajara, a featured stop of the Tequila Express. This open-bar magical train journeys to the Herradura and Jose Cuervo distilleries through endless field of agave. Chugga chugga chugga chugga…Tequila!
Much like wine tasting, tequila tasting can involve more than the liquids in question. End your day at ME Cancun after a day at La Distilleria, a tasting room, restaurant, and tequila museum all in one. For something more upscale, the Ritz Carlton offers tastings in its hotel lobby.
4. Cabo San Lucas
If you love animals as much as tequila, check out the Outback and Camel Safari in Cabo, conveniently located near the Bahia Hotel and Beach Club. While you’re riding a camel, a guide will share stories of the area’s history, its beach views, and the tequila making process. With the local history in mind and the tour’s included Mexican food and tequila, you’ll be ready to crash at the local Casa Dorada to prepare for another day of exploring.
5. Puerto Vallarta
Along the Pacific coast of Mexico, Puerto Vallarta has the beach, the culture, the architecture, and of course, the tequila. If you are staying at a centrally located resort like the Buganvilias or the Villa Premier, the Mama Lucia Tequila tour may be a challenge to find. But Persevere tequila enthusiasts! It is worth the trip out of town and away from the bustle. The tour and samples are free, and you only pay for the bottles that you buy.
