Hi mamapeno! Do you have any tips for writing about intelligence agencies such as the one Saeyoung works for? I'm planning to write a fic but I can't even describe his job. Like what does a hacker do? How does it work? Does his role have to be detailed in my fic? etc.
Well, a hacker does just that-hacks things. They steal information using computer programs, code and hacking passwords, etc.
I wouldn’t go too into detail about his job. If you describe too much it could be distracting for the reader. There’s an element of fantasy to his job. Most people have a good idea of what a hacker does without having to be told in detail. Letting your reader draw their own conclusions and imagine what he must be doing keeps that mysterious fog. Stick to what is relevant to your story. Does the reader really need to know XYZ in order to understand what’s going on? If the answer is no, then chuck it.
If you were writing about, say, a cook, you might describe them chopping vegetables or putting the meat in the pan to be seared. It’s relevant to what they’re doing in the moment. But you wouldn’t have to go into crazy detail i.e. describing where he got the vegetables that morning and what kind of knife he is using, the material the pan is made of and the type of stove in the kitchen. This is all useless information that doesn’t add anything of relevance to the story. He’s in the kitchen, he’s cutting veggies, that means he’s going to cook something. Saeyoung is on the computer, he’s typing code, he’s probably hacking something. Less is sometimes more. Let your readers fill in the blanks!
Hope this helps ^^ Good luck on your story!!
