Prosthecea cochleata is in the orchid family Orchidaceae. Commonly known as the cockleshell or jellyfish orchid, this species is native to parts of Central America including Colombia and Venezuela, and from south Florida through the West Indies. The flowers of this species and many other orchids are resupinate, meaning they develop upside down. This species is popular among orchid growers for its ease of cultivation, and long bloom times. Inflorescences can reach up to 2 feet long full of beautiful flowers.
