The dynamic duo of jockey Mike Smith and trainer Bob Baffert redeem their weekend with a big victory by Abel Tasman in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American oaks. The win at Saratoga is the third consecutive Grade 1 win for the three-year-old daughter of Quality Road. In fact, the 9 furlong contest was the filly’s fourth Grade 1 win.
Smith said he never felt he had any horse on board Arrogate in Saturday’s G2 San Diego Handicap, where they trailed the field and made a short-lived bid as they approached ¼ mile left. Today, Mike Smith appeared to feel he had plenty of horse power beneath him. Not content with second-to-last position for long, Abel Tasman made a bold move forward down the backstretch to quickly secure the lead, and prevailed in a head-to-head duel with Elate down to the wire.
