being a witch and living in a tiny dorm or apartment is a hassle… but here’s some (cheap and easy) tips to make your life a lot easier coming from a college witch!
quick note: if you are a student, you can get six months free of amazon prime with a student email account, and from then on out prime is only $50 instead of $100! amazon is a great place for tons of cheaper witchy resources (and really worth it for textbooks).
crystals! whether you’re sharing a room with someone or in a room by yourself, plenty of people collect and use crystals. check for local flea markets or see if there is an occult shop in your area, there’s bound to be some there. great starter crystals are clear quartz (an essential crystal), amethyst, and rose quartz!
📚 the library! your school library will have some sort of resources. also don’t worry about people thinking you’re strange for checking out books on magick… i promise they don’t care!
🕯 candles and incense! when i lived in a dorm, i hated not being able to light candles and burn incense. invest in some battery powered candles! you can get packs at local dollar stores or walmarts. as for aroma related magick, purchase some oils and mix them with some salt water and spray them around your room! oil warmers or wax warmers are also wonderful alternatives.
📖 a grimoire/book of shadows! i highly suggest keeping a personal book. no, you don’t have to get some elaborate leather bound book that came straight out of hocus pocus for it to be legit. you could find a sketchbook somewhere, use a three ring binder, or buy a hardback book at a thrift store and paint over the pages! your book is what you make of it. it is your own novel of personal magical experiences and knowledge, so make it your own!
🌵 plants! invest in cacti and succulents especially if you are a beginner or live in a tight space, they’re easy to manage throughout the rough mishaps and late nights of school work. cacti are great for protection and banishing negativity, where succulents bring love and healing. both plants can represent the ability to survive through conditions others cannot. if you have a balcony, take advantage!
⚗️ jars! now is a great time to collect containers from thrift stores, gather old pickle jars, and look for sales and coupons craft stores may have since most of them will have all sorts of neat jars.
🔮 an altar! if you don’t have a roommate to worry about, great! do your thing. if you do (and the don’t exactly seem cool with the whole witch thing), you can make a subtle altar of candles, crystals, and some plants or flowers. they don’t have to be elaborate. you could keep a small altar in a shoe box or draw one in your bos/grimoire! get creative!
✍️ sigils! use sigils. abuse sigils. put them everywhere. write them in binders or on your skin, write them on sticky notes or ripped paper and put them places you’ll see them or bury them outside. sleep with a protective one under your pillow. there’s so many things to do and its so easy to use them!
get creative! you can make crystals out of salt (another thing you should invest in), learn how to read playing cards if you can’t afford a tarot deck, and never forget you can find the coolest things at thrift stores. paint can be your best friend!
☕️ tea and coffee! a keurig is a wonderful investment. whether you like coffee or tea, it gives you boiling water fast without leaving a dorm. enchant your keurig and remind yourself of the properties in your drink to help you learn.
decorating! take advantage of things like twinkle lights and washi tape! if you don’t know about washi tape, its a decorating tape that does not damage walls. create constellations or sigils with washi tape on your walls! amazon also sells many cheap tapestries. give yourself a comfortable and pleasant space to live and work!
⏳ plan! enchant your planners to help you remember due dates, and while you’re at it, keep track of moon phases and other events! many calendars will tell you when full moons are.
meditate! this is something i find very important to stay sane during hard semesters. if you have a roommate, maybe meditate in the morning or late at night laying in bed. you could also meditate when they have classes. its okay if you cant every day, but its important to remember to save time for you.
walks! if you live in a dorm there’s a big chance you’ll be walking to class. enjoy these walks with nature, read outside every now and again, but make sure that you are always safe.
take your time! you do not have to collect all of these things in a week, month, or even year. witchcraft is all about intent and energy. you hold the power, the items are only there to help. manifest your own power, collect at your own pace.
🔎research! always research properties of things. buy cheap dried herbs from grocery stores and work with them, figure out what to put in your coffee to help you with your day, and learn how to enchant crystals to help you feel a little more confident about your studies. most importantly, learn to balance your studies and your witchy research, and don’t let witchcraft get in the way of your schoolwork. school should come first always!
i hope this helped some of you college witches, new and experienced! i am always open to answer questions! happy casting!
Here’s some things I wish someone told me when I was first starting out
You’re gonna find a lot of sources that are Wiccan. So if you don’t want to follow Wicca, it might be harder to find things that talk from a non- Wiccan perspective. This is not the only perspective. I encourage you even if you are wanting to follow Wicca to seek out specifically non-Wiccan sources to get a different view point. (nothing against Wicca here; I just think it’s healthy to get differing opinions)
It’s still witchcraft even if it doesn’t look like what books/Internets witchcraft looks like. Remember that:
Everyone has a different way of doing things and your craft will never ever be the same as anyone else’s.
The people posting about what witchcraft they’ve done are most of the time showing a perfected version of it. You are just starting out. You should not hold yourself up to the standards of people who have had more time and practice.
It’s actually good that it doesn’t look like anyone else’s because that means that it’s entirely your own.
I know it can feel very daunting first getting involved in witchcraft because there is so much to learn. Trust me, you cannot learn everything, and that is okay.
Take things step by step. Find something that really excites you. For example, say you are really interested in deity worship. Focus on just that first. Research different deities and meditate on the ones that interest you. Once you feel like you’ve learned enough (you don’t have to be an expert by any means, just to a point where you feel like you have your foot in the door) then you can move on to something else. You don’t have to do it this way, but I found it helped me narrow things down.
The idea that “if you don’t know what your doing with witchcraft it can backfire” is a myth. Don’t be afraid to explore, learn new things. That being said, I wouldn’t recommend doing anything outside your skill level either. Maybe save the big deal curses for when you have a good grasp on them. Listen to your intuition on this one, if you feel like something you’re doing is too much for you, don’t do it right away, but work your way up. Don’t give up on it, either. Like I said, if you feel like you don’t have the ability to do something, get to a point where you do.
You will have thoughts like “this won’t work” “you’re being stupid” “it’s just some *conventionally useless item*, that can’t do ANYTHING” this is okay. Any intrusive thoughts that tell you it’s not going to work are fine, especially if you are mentally ill. It does not mean your magic looses it’s power because you had an intrusive thought. Yes, the best way to make your magic work is to believe it will work, but intrusive thoughts will not automatically stop the magic from working. Just try your best to overcome them, whatever technique you have for that will work fine. I always use my inner voice to talk back to my intrusive thoughts and say something like “What? That doesn’t even make sense! You’re being ridiculous, random voice in my head that has no attachment to me.” and try to ignore it. Your mental illness does not make you a less powerful of a witch, remember that.
You are much more powerful than you realize. Own this. Be empowered by it.
You don’t have to have a whole bunch of extravagant altars and read your tarot cards and meditate every day to be considered a ‘real’ witch. You do magic without even realizing it sometimes. It’s sometimes hard to do anything big because of busy schedules/low spoons/being closeted or whatever. Try and incorporate little things in your daily routine. I did this by Stirring my tea clockwise and focusing on the cup, while repeating “this tea will improve my day” in my head. It works great for practicing putting your intent in things, focusing your energy, and it can even work if you live in an unfriendly witch household! Get creative with the little things you can do everyday. And even if you can’t do those things sometimes, don’t worry about it!
Be very careful about cultural appropriation in your practice. It can get very dicey as to what is offensive to include in your practice and what is not. I can tell you straight up right now that anything taken from a Native American culture is not okay to incorporate in your practice. A very popular thing that’s taken from Native American culture is smudging. Don’t smudge. There are many alternatives to this. That being said, some things are ok to take from other cultures because those cultures aren’t practiced by living people/are part of a culture or religion that is open to outsiders taking it. Don’t bat yourself up for doing something then finding out it was offensive, because when you recognize it then take necessary steps to fix it, that’s you growing as a person and is a positive change. If you aren’t sure if what your doing is cultural appropriation, ask yourself:
Is what I’m doing practiced by a group of people today? if yes, you’re in the danger zone, but it does not necessarily mean it is appropriation
Is the religion that it comes from a closed or open religion? (this means is it ok for outsiders, people who do not follow the religion, to practice it. example-Judaism=closed, wicca=open) If closed, it’s probably appropriation.
Am I apart of a race that has a history of oppressing this group of people? If yes, you might want to be cautious about it.
If it is deity related- Do the deities in question give me permission? if no, then definitely do not do it.
What would a person from that religion/culture think if they saw me doing this? If they would not like it, it might not be okay.
Is this from my heritage/ancestral background? Don’t worry too much if the answer is no but you passed most of the other questions, This one is mostly because if you grew up in a Jewish/Catholic/Muslim/other closed religion household, wanting to incorporate that in your practice is ok.
You do not have to be religious to practice witchcraft. Your craft can exclude deity work of any kind.
Don’t be afraid to ask what you feel are stupid questions. If your really scared, google is a very handy tool and most blogs have that anon option for a reason. :p

We wonder why we’re here. We see it as one of life’s greatest mysteries.
Sometimes, as much as we try to be polite, we can’t help but be relieved to see people leave after an extended stay. Maybe they overstayed their welcome, or were more of a nuisance than you anticipated when you offered the invitation. But now they’re gone, and the cleansing and banishing can begin!
Cleanse your space
An annoying guess can leave your house in physical and emotional turmoil. Wash sheets and tidy up the space they stayed in for sanitary purposes, but also to banish the negative energy they brought with them. Once you’ve finished cleaning, take a broom and sweep all the negativity out the front door.
Bad guests are stressful. Your guest may be gone, but the stress that’s piled up during their stay is still present. Calming bath helps physically relax while also soaking away any negativity that clung to you while you were cleaning. Finish the bath off with an exfoliating body scrub to wash the ick away, and lotion as a physical protective ward (and necessary hydration!).
Having visitors can be limiting, and it’s likely some aspect of your daily routine has been interrupted during their stay. Now is the time to reclaim things and make your space feel like home again. Once your decor is as it should be and secret notebooks are out of hiding, light some incense or candles to help give the area an emotional reset. Hearty, filling meals (like things containing root vegetables) help provide emotional grounding.
Set up wards
This isn’t a necessary step, but it’s a good added precaution. When you get sick you become more susceptible to other infections, and the same can happen with spaces filled with negativity. Setting up a few wards can help to repel any other gunk that ends up being drawn your way. Because the issue is someone who brought negativity into your home, the best placement for wards would likely be your overall home or property, the room they stayed in, and where they slept. The type of ward varies by personal preference and the issues brought on by their presence.
I’ve been meaning to do a quick Jadzia Dax closet cosplay for a while now and I finally motivated myself to do it today! And since I’m going to be doing an Ezri cosplay soon, I wanted to test out making the spots too!
I have more pictures but these two I had the most Jadzia-esque facial expressions so I wanted to post them first!
The cool thing about the moon is that it’s always there. For subtle magic, all you have to do is combine a mundane task and the moon phase you’re doing it on. Shaving is perfect for this because it’s already a ritual of its own.
Since the waxing moon precedes the full moon, it’s good for new beginnings and spells to draw something toward you. Shaving during this phase is good for wiping the slate clean to welcome new things into your life. After shaving, follow up with a salt scrub that matches your intent.
Basic Salt Scrub Recipe
1 cup sea or epsom salt
¼ cup olive oil
5-10 drops essential oil (optional)
Combine the salt and oil in a bowl. Olive oil is a good starter oil that many people already have, but coconut or grapeseed also works. More or less oil may be needed depending on the consistency you prefer.
The essential oils you use change depending on what you want to draw. Lavender is anti-anxiety and helps encourage calm. Patchouli is good for prosperity. Spearmint brings clarity and energizes.
Store in a jar or container of your choice. Unless you add a preservative, and leftovers will need to be refrigerated.
Remember!Bacteria can grow in unpreserved scrubs, even if it looks and smells fine. This makes the scrub less effective and can be bad for your health. If you know you can’t preserve it, lessen wasted product by only making as much as you need for a single use.
🌕 Full Moon
The full moon is, of course, the fullest phase of the moon. This phase is good for major charging and energizing. Because I have issues with chronic pain, I shave during the full moon to draw energy and discourage extremely low spoon days. Now is the time to plan and draw all the good things into your life. Shaving during this phase gets rid of old situations and makes room for new growth.
For a Full Moon Scrub, you can take the previous recipe and add a tablespoon of milk (I use powdered because no one in my house drinks milk) for chemical exfoliation and a few heaping spoonfuls of honey to moisturize and soften your skin. Both are also good for promoting bounty in whatever you wish to fill your life with.
The waning moon occurs as the full moon leaves, so it’s good for magic to banish or push things away. Shaving helps cast off whatever is bothering you as you cut through the hair. As you rinse your razor, also rinse away your problems. This is especially good if you haven’t shaved in a while as a result of depression or other issues.
Coffee grounds are a perfect addition to a banishing bath scrub because they banish old situations while also energizing you to move forward. Substitute a portion of the salt in the salt scrub recipe for coffee grounds and add in more salt, coffee, or oil as needed. This is also a good way to recycle grounds from the morning’s coffee.
🌑 New Moon
The new moon is great for when you need a spiritual and emotional deep clean. It’s like shaving during the waning moon, but amplified. You’re not only banishing your problems, but scrubbing the affected area clean of its influence. It’s also good for incurring drastic change in the form of loss. While loss sounds negative, it can include things like getting rid of bad habits or “losing” the funk you’ve been stuck in.
For a Deep Clean scrub, mix a teaspoon of charcoal, a spoonful of lemon juice, and a tablespoon of freshly grated ginger into the salt scrub recipe. Because ginger is warming, you’ll want to add in a small amount at a time and test the mixture on your skin to make sure you don’t go overboard.
IMPORTANT: Some essential oils can interact with medications or physical conditions. Please do you’re own research beforehand to make sure a recipe will give you no reactions. Always do a test patch before applying a new recipe to your body. These recipes are from personal experience, but I’m not a doctor so please don’t assume because it works for me it will be fine for you.
Today marks 5 years since the very official Twitter Welcome Committee made everyone aware of who Eleanor Calder was on Twitter and what her role was going to be going forward.
So Eleanor had been on Twitter for over a month on 17 March 2012 and had tweeted herself 260 times, but that didn’t stop everyone under the sun affiliated with Louis from “welcoming” her to Twitter. This was, miraculously, the day before she flew into NYC to spend the week with Louis. Even MORE stunning: it was the same week Up All Night was released in America and the summer headlining tour was announced and tickets went on sale.
It should be noted, this all began 30 minutes before the signing in Somerdale, NJ began (read: the exact time when the Twitter and Tumblr fandoms were most active waiting for pictures/fan reports).
Eleanor begins to tweet her own update accounts and 1D Fans around 1:30 pm EST ( x )
Dan tweets Eleanor “The lady that doesn’t tweet is now on Twitter! Hiya lovely how are you? Xx” to which Eleanor replies “I am indeed! Hello! I’m very well thank you :) how are you? Receovered from your lads holiday?! Haha x"
17: Woody Darling, Jay’s best friend, then tweets Eleanor for the first time 3 minutes later ”@amassive1Dfan no @eleanorJCalder and @DaniellePeazer had their own party #nottobeseenwiththeoldies x" ( x )
17: About 45 minutes later, George, Woody’s son, tweets Eleanor for the first time “glad to see you have joined the revolution ell, hope you are ok :)” to which Eleanor replies “Georgeee! I’m fine thank you babe :) I recognise your picture, is that from new year?! Xx” ( x )
17: George replies to Eleanor “I am glad to hear it :) yes it is - it was such a good night! Hope all is well and you’re behaving yourself! Haha x” to which Eleanor replies “I’m always on my best behaviour! Hope your thumb has fixed itself! See you soon xx” ( x )
17: Eleanor begins to call out fake twitter accounts ( x )
17: Louis tweets Eleanor directly for the first time at 7:24PM “Miss you ! X” ( x ) 17: Eleanor responds to Louis’ tweet 10 minutes later “Miss you too, got your biscuits! X” ( x )
18: Louis finally follows Eleanor on Twitter ( x )
18: Em, Eleanor’s cousin and a 1D fan, tweets her for the first time “You have so many followers already, lordy Lord!xx” to which Eleanor replies “Crazy!! Xx” ( x )
18: To make sure she authenticates who Em is, Eleanor tweets her 6 minutes later “Don’t forget it’s Grandma’s birthday today toooo! Xx” ( x )
18: Danielle (Liam’s then girlfriend) tweets Eleanor like Eleanor just got a twitter account yesterday “Really happy to have @EleanorJCalder join the Twitter World! I can now tweet about our antics and tag her in it! Xx” to which Eleanor replies “Woohoooo! :) #coffeeeverywhere xx” ( x )
18: Danielle tweets “@Real_Liam_Payne has said he’s not going to follow @EleanorJCalder unless we can get #therewasacrazymoose trending….let’s gooo! Xx” ( x )
So Louis didn’t follow Eleanor UNTIL EVERYONE HE KNEW WELCOMED HER TO TWITTER.
They coordinated this effort around a fan signing event, the album release in the U.S., and the announcement of the summer tour.
They used 3 of the 9 perception management strategies:
– Employ actors and organizations that will lend authenticity to the campaign
support – Supporters of the campaign should come from multiple levels –
personal, professional, public, private, etc.
– The flow of information should be centralized at the top of a chain of
And nearly 5 years later, this is very much like how they reintroduced Eleanor to the current scenario. In both cases she was:
She was waiting in the wings to be introduced to the fans when the timing was right
She was authenticated by accounts known to be “official” by fans
She participated just enough to lend credibility to the authentication
Recap stories were written about her and Louis’ “relationship” to date to remind fans of who she was and why she was important
Their tactics this time around aren’t quite as overt as asking fans to trend something stupid to get Liam to follow her (*cringe*), but they had Louis’ sisters accounts like pictures hours after the official Danielle and Louis breakup confirmation in the Sun. They have public “friends” following Eleanor update accounts (James Arthur) and James Corden following Eleanor on Twitter.
It’s all the same pieces working in the same way to create a story that, on the surface, seems plausible, but in reality is just smoke and mirror social media activity to give the press enough to write a story.
I know this isn’t anything knew, but the date reminded me of just how coordinated both of these little campaigns were and how easily they promoted the agendas of 1DHQ both times.
(And, sadly, I don’t think they went to the same effort again to pull the rug out from under Elounor after 4-6 weeks. I think this will last several months).
can you like briefly describe some signs of emotional abuse... like i've read a lot of articles on it but i feel like they are spittng bs at me if that makes sense?? idk
that makes sense, i know the feeling.
the thing about emotional abuse is that it doesn’t take just one form, it can range from complete and repeated neglect of another person’s feelings to straight up manipulation and verbal lambasting. that’s the most insidious thing about it, it’s very hard to pinpoint. because it’s so wide-ranging, it’s hard to accept that you are or have been emotionally abused. in most cases, if you feel like you are being abused by someone, you most likely are. once it gets to the point where you feel like you can use the word ‘abuse’, even if it feels so so heavy, you’re probably there.
i think that if a person is neglecting your feelings, not taking them into account when/if you bring them up, continually doing things that hurt you even when you bring up to them that it hurts you, and making you feel wrong/crazy/irrational when you bring them up, that’s emotional abuse. if the person somehow always seems to make you feel wrong or guilty/they turn it back around on you when you bring up what they’re doing that’s hurting you, that’s manipulation, and that’s emotional abuse. you’ll most likely stop bringing up to them things that hurt you because you know it’s going to be spun back around to make you feel guilty.
if, in your relationship (whether it’s romantic, platonic, or familial), you constantly feel like you are being drained of emotion/energy or being used for constant emotional labor without the person doing anything in return for you, that’s emotional abuse. relationships are about mutual giving and taking. if you are constanty giving and they ate takiny and taking, they’re taking advantage of you, they know they are, and they often don’t feel bad or guilty about it at all. they will continue to take and take from you because they know that they can. that’s emotional abuse.
if you feel like you’re walking on eggshells around this person, if you feel like this person is isolating you from everyone else, if you feel like this person is tearing you down, if you feel like this person is not supporting you the way that you support them, if you feel like this person is completely disregarding your feelings all the time, that’s emotional abuse. and it may come in the form of something like “well, i lied to you/did this because i didn’t want to hurt or upset you, because i knew you’d be upset” which is a way that abusers try to paint themselves as the good guy when they’re hurting you. it makes you, the victim, feel bad and guilty and like you have no right to be upset, even though you absolutely do. they absolve themselves of guilt that way to make themselves feel better, not you, and that’s not fair, and they really don’t care about your feelings.
a common misconception about emotional abuse is that is has to be intentional on the abuser’s part, which isn’t always true. someone can be abusing you without even realizing they’re doing it because they’re so caught up in their own needs that they fail to realize that they’re abusing, taking advantage of, and manipulating you. that doesn’t mean it isn’t abuse; in fact, it shows that they care so little about your feelings that they don’t even realize what they’re doing, and that’s fucked up. (http://thexfiles.tumblr.com/post/157356728735/the-insidious-power-of-abuse-is-that-it-comes-from)
i know you asked for a short response, so i’m sorry that this is so long and scatterbrained. i’m in class and i can’t sit down and formulate a cogent response, but i’m incredibly passionate about this and wanted to respond as soon as i could.
