Terrorist: First, you’ll be sealed in a reinforced titanium box. Next, you will be dropped into this bottomless chasm. Then, the chasm will be filled with water. Then, man-eating sharks and a giant squid will then be released into the water!
Natasha: Wait, if the chasm is bottomless, how can you fill it with water?
Terrorist …IT’S VERY, VERY DEEP, ALL RIGHT?! Lastly, I shall freeze over the water with a six-foot layer of solid GLACIAL ICE! ANY QUESTIONS?
Just a little hint that The Kiss from Avengers Assemble #5 wasn’t the only Clintasha moment in the series… though, admittedly, it was the best. In the “Widow’s Ledger” arc, Natasha is called to Moscow; in the unspecified past, she distributed nine coins to nine people she’d badly, and unjustly, wronged. One token has been cashed in, and Nat - with Clint and Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman, at the time dating Clint) in tow. She didn’t want to bring them along - but as this sequence shows, it’s a good thing she did.
I won’t summarize the storyline… what I really enjoyed was Clint’s reaction to seeing Nat badly, and likely mortally, hurt. He loses it. It’s not his “berzerker button” - he just has every coherent thought blasted out of his head, and he’s at a complete loss. His only thought seems to be, Gotta save Nat. Gotta save Nat. Don’t know HOW, just gotta do it.
And then there’s that lovely little foreshadowing… “We’re gonna get you out of here, Tash. We got unfinished business, you and me.” Hmmm. Love is for children… I owe him a debt?
And sure enough, on the last page, Jess (who has, in recent issues, become close friends with Nat) wants to know how many more tokens are out there. She guesses, probably correctly, that if Nat is going to be diving into trouble, Clint will be right there with her - and where Clint goes, Jess (who’s got a bit of a jealous streak) is darned well going, too.
What she doesn’t know is that Clint is one of the remaining tokens… Unfinished business.
Clint doesn’t realise he is in love with Natasha until it is pointed out to him. Apparently it was obvious. Apparently everyone knew. And apparently now he’s going to have to do something about it since he can’t stop thinking about her.
Written Clintasha Week 2016 Day 2: Headcanons. Spanning Avengers Assemble S2E15 to S2E18, and playing off the headcanon “Everyone knew Clint was in love with Natasha before he did.” This is my first full length fic in over a year, so I hope y'all enjoy!
Clint felt off. He still made his
shots, still took down the bad guys, but it was impossible to ignore
the fact that the Avengers were at an extreme disadvantage. No Cap
calling strategies, no Hulk smashing, and no Falcon swooping in to
save their asses. Sure, they still had Iron Man’s suit and brains,
and Thor’s godlike strength and powers, but Clint felt like a part of
him was missing, his left arm or maybe an eye. Something critical.
Of course he knew exactly what that
thing was, the thing he wasn’t
thinking of, but he wasn’t willing to admit it until he left
his back open and only just barely avoided losing his head.
