New Favourites: Make-up & Skin Care

In general beauty lovers can be a bit fickle, flitting between brands and products like restless butterflies in the hopes of finding the next big thing. Mind you, I only feel confident saying that because I know I’m guilty of it too - I have a few staples that work for me, but other than that it’s anyone’s game. To be fair though, there’s nothing quite like finding new potions and lotions that actually do what they say on the tin to make your heart sing. Here are a few of my new favourite things…

Clinique BB Cream: With so many on the market now, it’s hard to know which BB cream to test out first - but for combination/oily skin Clinique’s is hard to beat. The light, oil free formula has a good coverage plus SPF 30 sun protection and can be used in lieu of foundation during the day or as a primer for the ultimate, flawless complexion.

Philosophy Cleansing Oil: Quick and easy make-up removal is definitely top on the list of priorities for most women, but you don’t have to sacrifice good skin care for effective make-up removal. Purity Made Simple cleansing oil leaves skin thoroughly free of all make-up as well as feeling and looking really fresh afterwards.

Benefit Hervana Blusher: Perfect for creating a subtle glow to cheeks, Hervana (above) is a soft, neutral tone that works well with both natural and full nighttime make-up and is sure to become another cult product for the Benefit stable.

Born Lippy by The Body Shop: Made with fair trade beeswax and Namibian community fair trade marula oil, there’s a variety of tasty flavours including Pink Berry, Satsuma & Toffee in the Born Lippy collection. The cute and cool pop art design is a new direction for The Body Shop but the comfort and silky feel of the balms is as good as ever.

Benefit, Clinique & Philosophy are available in Arnotts, The Body Shop is on Grafton St & Henry St.

For the individuals who want to know what I use on my face ( as far as makeup ) here’s my main products
Starting from the left my
1: Laura Mercier contour kit …THAT I NEVER USE 💀only on my good days when I feel like I can contour other than that I use some of the pallets for concealer . My girlfriend actually got me this from Sephora . It was $50 💀 (I got the one for darker skin )

2: Next is my favorite powered , Black Radiance pressed powder , so cheap (like $4-5) and so wonderful I’ve been using it for YEARS since high school ( my shade is creamy/beige) don’t have to apply that much unless I feel like it . I use my real techniques brush to apply my powder ( and foundation ) I know most professionals don’t do it that way that’s why I’m not a professional 😂 you guys asked I’m just answering . ( can be found in Walmart / rite aid , Walgreens etc )

Anyhow next is the most expensive foundation I have ever purchased , (it was like $50) I actually think it costs more than my clothes 😂it’s my new favorite 3:NARS all day luminous foundation in med/dark MACAO . To be VERY HONEST the foundation is one of the best I’ve ever tried but I don’t think it’s all that only because I think I still need to practice applying it , i just ordered new brushes and primer to make the application easier . It’s pretty watery so you have to shake it , it doesn’t oxidize too much to me , the coverage is pretty great , it’s build-able. Got it from Sephora btw

4: Kiss Beauty balm bbcream/foundation / concealer whatever you want it to be . Found this in the summer time while I was in Florida in a beauty supply store and I LOVED it . The coverage was amazing and fit my skin perfectly . Because my undertones change from red (in the summer ) to more yellow in the winter it doesn’t work as well as it did before but sometimes if I feel like my foundation is too light I mix this with it . My shade was medium/dark kbbo3 .I don’t think the price exceeds $7. (

5: my very first purchase ( foundation wise ) from Sephora , extremely light weight , no fragrance , cruelty free and the price is decent (like $28) I got color matched and the associate recommended this . The coverage was beautiful , color matched me perfectly ( shade 24-golden ) I used my real techniques brush to apply . This foundation I loved to it sit on my face for a while before I blended it .

6: my real techniques brush I got from Walmart for like $8-10, I don’t remember cause I think there was a sale, anyhows, no shedding , blends great . That’s all I have to say lol

7: Ruby Kisses concealers for contouring (the darker one in caramel ) and the lighter one for dark spot correcting ( shade chocolate brown ) the shades seem so backwards but that’s what they say ! They were $2.99 at the beauty supply ( where you can find them ) and I use my beauty blender to apply the contour shade . I really like them, they work well .

8: my “ beauty blender” I got from the beauty supply for $2.99 but I’m going to get the real one lol . Nothing is wrong with this one but I just know the real one is better . I think the brand was kiss

9: my favorite bronzer/highlight ever ( besides becca cosmetics topaz which I WILL be purchasing soon !) I got it for $3-5 at my favorite place …THE BEAUTY SUPPLY STORE 😂💁🏾. I only use it on my cheeks but in the summer time I’ll apply it to my shoulders and stuff for a bit of a glow . I THINK brand is ruby kisses in “ Bronze Glow ” which I think is beautiful for brown / darker skin . It’s not ashy looking and I just apply this with a blush brush from BH cosmetics .

And there you have it ! Again I’m not a professional / make up guru . Just another girl trying to fleek her face 💁🏾 these are just the products I use .

Sephora Haul. I needed a refill of my Clinque BB cream. I like it’s light feel on my face & yet more coverage than just a tinted moisturizer. The Benefit Erase Paste was also a restocking item for my makeup bag. It’s my favorite undereye concealer. On a whim I picked up Clinique Self Tan. I’m committed to steering clear of tanning beds so hopefully this will give me a nice all over glow. For a long time I’ve been wanting to try the NARS Laguna bronzer and while I was searching for it I found this gorgeous Miss Liberty blush. It has a hint of sparkle & is a lovely neutral taupe color. I’ve never tried any Fab products, but I needed some shave cream so I’m going to give this one a try. When I was waiting in line I saw this adorable Sephora Handbag Makeup Pallette. I couldn’t resist it! I think it will be perfect for on the go touch ups. All in all I am very pleased with my purchases.

A Quick Guide to: How to Choose the Right Foundation

Foundation that gives the appearance of glowing, flawless skin is top of the check list for most women I speak to about make-up because after all, it makes us look healthier, happier and more youthful which is never a bad thing! If you’re considering investing in a new foundation then here are my top tips for how to choose one:

1) Coverage: Foundations come in anything from invisible veil formulas to maximum coverage so first off decide what kind of finish you’d like - baring in mind that the higher coverage you choose the more make-up in general is required to balance out the look. A good compromise is to invest in a “buildable” foundation such as Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation or MAC Face & Body, both of which can be taken from minimal coverage to medium/full for different occasions.

2) Consistency: Cream, liquid, powder, gel, oil free - there are many different types of bases out there to suit different skin types. As a rule of thumb gel and liquid foundations such as Bourjois Healthy Mix are considered suitable for any skin type, creamy foundations are more suited to dry or older complexions while powder or oil free formulas like NARS Sheer Matte are great for keeping shine at bay.

3) Finding a Shade: When testing out a new foundation shade a good trick is to apply a little on your forehead; to see how it looks in the centre of your face - then also try it along the jawline to ensure it will blend perfectly into the neckline too. Natural daylight is the best kind to test out foundation shades as shop lighting can sometimes cast a blue tone onto skin.

4) Foundation Hybrids: For every day wear it might be worth thinking about having a skincare/make-up hybrid in your make-up bag as these actively work to treat skin while you’re up and about during the day. Whether it’s a BB, CC or mineral formula things to look out for include; good SPF, vitamin enhanced formulas free from parabens and artificial fragrances. My favourites include Dermalogica Cover Tint (SPF 20) and Clinique BB Cream (SPF 30).

Clinique, MAC and NARS are available in Brown Thomas, Illamasqua is online via www.illamasqua.com Bourjois and Dermalogica are available in selected pharmacies nationwide.

Are there any high end tinted moisturizers that you recommend I recently stopped wearing foundation but I still want to have light coverage tinted moisturizer on

Hello :)

With summer right around corner tinted moisturizers will be great when you want some coverage without feeling like foundation is melting off your face!

Check out some products like

Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Glow Foundation $45. Even though this a foundation Charlotte Tilbury is all about natural, light makeup. This has a light to medium coverage with a glowing yet matte finish. Great for those who don’t want to look super dewy yet still keep a glow.

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream $29. This is great for those with sensitive or dry skin. This is very hydrating and light weight while still giving light coverage.

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream $39. This BB cream has a light to medium coverage with a matte/satin finish. It’s a lot more long wearing than other tinted moisturizers/bb creams so this would work better for combination/oily skin in the warmer months.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer $44. This is a great basic tinted moisturizer. It’s light weight, gives light to medium coverage and has a natural finish. Really gives you that fresh, no makeup makeup look. They also make an illuminating version if you like more of a glow!

Clinique Acne Solutions BB Cream $37. Great for those with acne prone or sensitive skin. This won’t break you out and controls oils so you won’t get clogged pores!
