One performance really isn’t enough to judge a performer.
Examples: 1) Performers growing into a role. I wasn’t too fond of Javier as Usnavi, Ari as Eliza, etc, at the beginning of their run, but listening to performances months later is a completely different experience. They get much much better over time as they gain confidence and familiarity with the role.
2) Understudies who fill several roles are better in some. I love Aubin Wise as Angelica, but I don’t like her as Eliza. I don’t like Doreen Montalvo as Daniela but I love her as Abuela Claudia. Krysta Rodriguez is alright as Vanessa but amazing as Carla. Some roles just work better and just because you didn’t like them in one part doesn’t mean they’re not amazing in another.
3) Performers are human beings and some days, they’re not doing as well. They might be tired, otherwise preoccupied, in a bad time of their life. Lin performed less well the couple weeks after Karen left In the Heights, even though he’s usually stellar as Usnavi. He was probably missing his lead lady.
If you heard one audio from a certain performer and didn’t like them, it doesn’t automatically mean you wouldn’t like them under different circumstances. Keep your mind open. Listen to more.
