clamp on magazine

From the vault: Rayearth Edition

Welcome to the first entry of this time machine in which I will talk about old merchandise of Rayearth, back in the time in which this series was published inside Nakayoshi Magazine.

However, for this first entry I’ll go back even further, at the time that the first chapter of this series wasn’t published yet. So, let’s go back to the year of 1993 in which internet wasn’t the big monster of massive communication that is today…

“Cardcaptors” is a property of CLAMP and Madhouse

The last time I went to the library, I discovered they had CLAMP’s The One I Love (Watashi no Sukinahito in Japanese). So I checked it out, and finally read it today. Basically, it’s an anthology of little one-shot stories, all on the subject of love, which CLAMP published in the magazine Monthly Young Rose from 1993 to 1995. (The omake comic identifies said magazine as being for “young women,” which I presume means jōsei, manga marketed to women around 18-24, which is definitely a different age bracket than most of their works are written for). The comics are drawn by Tsubaki Nekoi (then still going by her former name Mick Nekoi) and are accompanied by short essays written by Nanase Ohkawa, who was also responsible for the story of the comics. The two other members of CLAMP, Mokona Apapa (usually just called Mokona) and Satsuki Igarashi, are only credited for helping this time.

I really liked the stories. They deal with everything from getting up the courage to confess your love, to getting over an argument, to insecurity about a relationship, to wondering if you’re ready for marriage to if it’s ok that you might become a different person after getting married.

Anyway, definitely buying it for my semi-unofficial collection of CLAMP mangas, which currently consists of full sets of Magic Knight Rayearth, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, xxxHolic, the CLAMP School Trilogy (Clamp School Detectives, Man of Many Faces, and CLAMP School Defenders Dukylon), and Wish; a near full set of Cardcaptor Sakura (I need one volume of the first arc), and a couple volumes of Gate 7. Plus I own a few volumes of their magazine CLAMP no Kiseki and one of their artbooks. Basically, I love CLAMP. I want to get caught up on their series. I haven’t read RG Veda or Tokyo Babylon, their two earliest works, or the unfinished X and Clover (except one chapter). I started to read Legal Drug but didn’t like it. I also have not read Kobato yet, or the latest xxxHolic series, or all of Angelic Layer. I’ve also read Chobits, but I can’t remember if I actually own it.

Aside from CLAMP, I really like Naoko Takeuchi, naturally. I’ve gotten a bit into Arina Tanemura; I started to read the Full Moon wo Sagashite manga, and I’ve seen the anime of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. Her newer series Sakura-Hime is also good.

I’ve been expanding my horizons though with manga, thanks to the library; currently I’m reading Oh My Goddess!, Detective Conan (Case Closed in the U.S.) and Princess Jellyfish (my first jōsei series!). I recently finished the Shugo Chara and Haruhi Suzumiya mangas, and I’ve also read MÄR. This library has a large, varied manga selection, which makes me happy.

But anyway…I got off track. I love manga, I love CLAMP, and I loved this book in particular.
