Australian Civil Unions VS Marriage
I was just explaining to a guy on twitter (who, as soon as I gave him evidence, called me slurs, because he is a man) about the difference between civil unions and marriage in Australia.
It’s really common for conservatives to say things like “gays have civil unions! they don’t need marriage!” and shit.
But few people actually realise that… there is a HUGE legal difference in Australia between civil unions and marriage.
First of all, civil unions are not even available or recognised in every Australian state and territory. That means that if you get a civil union in Queensland, but travel to WA, SA, or the NT, it is not legally recognised.
If you travel overseas, it is very likely that it will not be recognised either.
Marriage on the other hand? Recognised pretty much everywhere.
And of course we know the issues with death, assets, etc. that comes with not having a recognised relationship.
