Hong Kong Yesterday: A look back at late Fan Ho’s photography
No one has been able to capture the essence of Hong Kong quite like photographer Fan Ho. What made his works so special are no doubt the well-arranged black-and-white compositions and the poetic atmosphere he vividly portrayed. But perhaps most importantly, Fan’s photographs are treasured because they captured 1950s Hong Kong, a bygone era of one of the world’s most unique cities that now only exists in photo form.
The widely acclaimed Chinese master of his art passed away on June 19, 2016, at a hospital in California, aged 84. With his passing, there is no better time than now to let his photos bring us back to the old days of Hong Kong.
Venture to the outskirts of China’s biggest cities and you’ll find soaring towers and a barren landscape. One day, these futuristic high-rises will house the 250 million or so people the government hopes to move from villages into cities. For now, though, they remain all but empty. “They look like ghost towns,” says photographer Aurelien Marechal. “They’re suburbs in the middle of nowhere.”
we still don’t have water (i live in an apartment building and we have a water tank, but many people don’t have ANY water at home)
classes at schools in lima (the capital city) have been suspended again - they resume on wednesday
my uni has postponed classes: i was supposed to start tomorrow but they will start on the 27th
right now, a jail is on fire
many bridges have fallen and cities at the north of the country are now completely inaccesible
probably the rains and mudslides won’t stop for at least a month
also: i’m temporarily closing my studyblr. from now on i’m only going to share info about the situation here in peru. i know i don’t have a lot of followers and many of you have been ignoring this (which makes me feel really sad and dissapointed at the studyblr community) but it doesn’t feel right to go on like nothing is happening. if you want to contact me and ask me how can you help, i’ll be happy to tell you all i know.
There is so little talk about the ancient cities of Africa. To often Africa and African culture is portrayed both in history and fantasy as savage and undeveloped, when nothing could be further from the truth.
we closed down the most important zones of bucharest tonight with over 300k marching from the protest at victory square to union square, spitting our lungs out from screaming. shaming the lepers in these rich zones not even having one flag out, pushing them back inside from their balconies with lasers. ‘sdp, the red plague,’ ‘nad, come get 'em,’ 'thieves,’ 'resign,’ were the main chants, alongside 'if you care, come outta the house.’ at the end, everyone applauded and started singing at the subway station in union square. amazed by the solidarity, people came from all over the country to protest with us in bucharest. shout out to the romanians in the west protesting, shout out to the romanians out right now in over 70 cities.
