The Signs and Cities:

Aries: A city of ripplling marble walls that stand fast against the sea. A city of hidden gardens.

Taurus: Vast umber halls now buried. A grand courthouse now a necropolis that guards sacred remains.

Gemini: Cities separated by a great bridge, the methods of its construction now lost to time.

Cancer: The streets of an old port city reclaimed by the sea. Host to new dwellers.

Leo: A city tied in knots. No map will be of use.

Virgo: A city carved from the bones of something titanic and long dead.

Libra: A holy city cloaked in iron and coffee.

Scorpio: A market district so vibrant it has a language and an embassy all its own.

Ophiuchus: The city of pipes, shafts, and poverty. A refuge from the shining city above.

Sagittarius: A city on rails. So many shifting parts it feels as if it may depart any moment.

Capricorn: A city of srtorms. A city powered by a thousand funnles, aquaducts, and dynamos.

Aquarius: A grand capital. A headstone to every city like it that came before.

Pisces: A palace now pinned to the earth by trees. The dusty crown worn by wolves.

Hong Kong Yesterday: A look back at late Fan Ho’s photography

No one has been able to capture the essence of Hong Kong quite like photographer Fan Ho. What made his works so special are no doubt the well-arranged black-and-white compositions and the poetic atmosphere he vividly portrayed. But perhaps most importantly, Fan’s photographs are treasured because they captured 1950s Hong Kong, a bygone era of one of the world’s most unique cities that now only exists in photo form.

The widely acclaimed Chinese master of his art passed away on June 19, 2016, at a hospital in California, aged 84. With his passing, there is no better time than now to let his photos bring us back to the old days of Hong Kong.

☁ Unova region - the ‘cloud’ region ☁

“When my dragons are grown, we will take back what was stolen from me and destroy those who wronged me! We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground!”

Are you with me, now and always?

Venture to the outskirts of China’s biggest cities and you’ll find soaring towers and a barren landscape. One day, these futuristic high-rises will house the 250 million or so people the government hopes to move from villages into cities. For now, though, they remain all but empty. “They look like ghost towns,” says photographer Aurelien Marechal. “They’re suburbs in the middle of nowhere.”

SEE MORE: China’s huge, eerie tower blocks that will soon house millions.

  • we still don’t have water (i live in an apartment building and we have a water tank, but many people don’t have ANY water at home)
  • classes at schools in lima (the capital city) have been suspended again - they resume on wednesday
  • my uni has postponed classes: i was supposed to start tomorrow but they will start on the 27th
  • right now, a jail is on fire
  • many bridges have fallen and cities at the north of the country are now completely inaccesible
  • probably the rains and mudslides won’t stop for at least a month

also: i’m temporarily closing my studyblr. from now on i’m only going to share info about the situation here in peru. i know i don’t have a lot of followers and many of you have been ignoring this (which makes me feel really sad and dissapointed at the studyblr community) but it doesn’t feel right to go on like nothing is happening. if you want to contact me and ask me how can you help, i’ll be happy to tell you all i know.
Story of cities #5: Benin City, the mighty medieval capital now lost without trace
With its mathematical layout and earthworks longer than the Great Wall of China, Benin City was one of the best planned cities in the world when London was a place of ‘thievery and murder’. So why is nothing left?

There is so little talk about the ancient cities of Africa. To often Africa and African culture is portrayed both in history and fantasy as savage and undeveloped, when nothing could be further from the truth.

we closed down the most important zones of bucharest tonight with over 300k marching from the protest at victory square to union square, spitting our lungs out from screaming. shaming the lepers in these rich zones not even having one flag out, pushing them back inside from their balconies with lasers. ‘sdp, the red plague,’ ‘nad, come get 'em,’ 'thieves,’ 'resign,’ were the main chants, alongside 'if you care, come outta the house.’ at the end, everyone applauded and started singing at the subway station in union square. amazed by the solidarity, people came from all over the country to protest with us in bucharest. shout out to the romanians in the west protesting, shout out to the romanians out right now in over 70 cities.
