In a major number evoking the 1949 musical “On the Town,” Mr. Tatum leads singing-dancing sailors on their last night of leave in a bar. But no one choreographs tap dances for movies today, except for the rare Broadway transplant. The Coens brought in Christopher Gattelli, the Tony-winning choreographer of the Broadway musical “Newsies.” Together they made the dances work on camera for the routine called “No Dames,” which has an increasingly comic and sexual subtext that would never have surfaced 60 years ago.

Mr. Tatum is known as a dancer in movies like “Step Up,” but hadn’t sung before. Joel Coen said, “We thought, that’s exactly how it used to work. You wouldn’t necessarily be a singer when you worked in Hollywood in the ’50s.” Stars like Fred Astaire were dancers who happened to sing.

Mr. Gattelli discovered the depth of the Coens’ research. He said, “They showed me some Donald O’Connor movies they fell for.” Although O’Connor is famous for the classic “Singin’ in the Rain,” the Coens showed Mr. Gattelli a number called “Applied Mathematics” from the obscure 1948 movie “Are You With It?” (full movie on YT). The scene became one inspiration for the tap routine.

Mr. Gattelli also asked if the sailors’ dive bar had a name. The Coens started riffing on possibilities until they came up with the absurd yet plausible “The Swinging Dinghy.” Mr. Gattelli said, “That was my way into the number, that light touch, the wink of it all.”

The Newsies watching Christopher Gattelli win his Tony for Best Choreography. If you watch nothing else of Newsies or the Tony coverage watch this. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the exact context or anything else. This is just a group of people watching someone they admire and who gives them a voice on stage every night win the most deserved award. It will melt your heart. THIS is what being part of the theatre community (on whatever level that may be) is about.
