Beginner Witch Tips

WARNING: I am a sarcastic butthole and it shows through out this hot mess of a post. This is some random craft junk I have learned in my days of practicing witchcraft

Witch craft is not magic.

I don’t care what you have heard. Witchcraft is not magic. It can not turn your eyes different colors. It can not make you into a animal. You will not be able to control the weather or summon wind with your fingers. Ghosts will not do as you say. This is not Harry Potter. Case closed

Intent over tools

Do you think it’s gonna matter if you use a butter knife as an athame? Or you have to sub a white candle for another color because you don’t have the funds to buy that color? Or you had to leave out an ingredient because you don’t have it or you’re allergic? No, it’s not. Witchcraft (to me) is about mind over matter. If you are making an effort for your God/god/goddess/deity/elf/fae/etc it isn’t gonna matter what or how you got there, but the intent you had getting there

Cursing and hexing is up to you and your beliefs

Totally up to you if you believe that this is okay or not. However, if you don’t like this, do not go and tell someone else it’s wrong. If they ask you how you feel you can tell them it’s not your thing. If you do like this, do not go and tell someone else it’s fine and try to get them to accept it. If they ask you about it, you can tell them that you are into it

You do not have to have an alter

It’s up to you and your practice. And if you can where you are etc. If you want one and can not have one, draw one or, my favorite, Set up a pinterest board for your god/goddess/fae/elf/deity etc. and save things that you thing relate to them.

It’s not about fancy stuff

This goes back to intent over tools, as long as you are comfortable with what you are doing and using, do it and use it. I use salsa and yogurt containers, coffee filters taped together, M&M tubes, and envelopes to keep crap in. I use a 99¢ Wal-Mart bandanna to do spells on that I got from Girl Scout camp and it has rainbow peace signs all over it. Do I care? Nope. Does anyone else care or will they judge you? Nope. we are all in the same boat here.

Hand making things is way too underrated

I LOVE hand making things. Whether you are good or bad at it, it is a good way to save money, and personalize it just for you. Example: I made tarot cards out of printer paper that I cut out and wrote the card name, and definition of what it means (to me) and I love them. Pencil wand? Yas queen. DIY cauldron out of play-dough? Frick me u p daddy.

You’d think I would have to include this bUT
Some things are okay to consume. Sometimes if taking a certain medicine you can’t consume that. Sometimes you are allergic to one thing, and in turn you will be allergic to that thing too. Sometimes you are pregnant and it’S HIGHLY DANGEROUS TO CONSUME THINGS WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT DOES

Never ignore professional medical advice and help in favor of witchcraft methods.

Spirit workers

Not nice spirits can attach to people who have depression and anxiety more so than people who don’t

There are good and bad spirits. if one makes you feel comfomy, do not feel bad for asking it to leave/getting rid of it

Don’t ask your tarot cards every time you have a question

This happens a lot. Especially when you get a new deck and it’s so new and shiny and you can’t w a i t to get your grubby little hands on it and do crap >:D but you don’t want to get into the habbit of “ohgoshgollybatman I have to go to the store, okay let’s see if I’ll get hit by a car… oh and do I really need the applejuice..”  or “do I REALLY need this plant..” bc the answer to that is always yes duh

Divination is not for predicting the future

Now stay with me, it is for guiding you in the future. It can not tell you what day you are going to die, who you are going to marry, etc

The future is not written in stone

Let’s sayyyyy you do a simple past, present, and future reading with tarot, and you get a bad reading for the future, it doesn’t matter. That is how it is going right now, now you can see what you need to change etc

You dont need a fancy journal for a grimore or book of shawdows

Heckadoodle I use a binder and notebook paper so I can move stuff around. I just write with a pencil and pen, and color with dollar store crayons or collered pencils.
Now, you may be thinking, “Oh but, it’s a nice binder right?” Lemme stop you right there. It is falling apart, needs to be ducktaped, has a picture of my doggo inside and I’ve used it for school for abouutt.. 7 years?
Summin’ it up: It don’t gotta be fancy

If you forget to blow out candles set a timer on your phone

I do this all the freaking time and I’ll leave a candle out, and then here comes mother. Closet underage witches know the struggle. Trying to explain why you have a burning candle left in your room. Or if you are adult and have to adult after a spell or whatever and leave the house and come back to the candle just sittin’ there. Burning away. (my mom did this once and it caught her table on fire)
Timer. Yep.

You don’t have to know a certain language

This is more focused to me bc i am nerd but okie dokie
I know Latin from school, therefore I mix it into my spells (like some on @witchy-recipes-and-things) and provide a translation. I don’t want anyone to think you have to have a certain language for your craft.

How to Ouija

Tbh this is too long already so if you want another post on it tell me and I’ll make one and link it

Sigils can be drawn everywhere

In your phone case, in your wallet, in a shoe, under fingernail polish, under seats, wherever whatever-I can also elaborate more on this

When doing love spells, consent from the other person is a must.

You can be a christian, athiest, pagan, whatever, and still do witchcraft

It is about the craft, not religion

Witchcraft is not a religion, Wicca is

And you do not have to be Wiccan to partake in Witchcraft

Sage doesn’t have to be in cone shape to burn it

I put rubbed sage meant for cooking on a metal plate and torch the sucker Shane Dawson style but with one of the long lighters, then run around my house in my underware screaming “MAY THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPEL YOU BITCH” in Latin

When cleansing

Trust your witch mother who is allergic to everything and is an asthmatic, open the windows and doors.
Also, as the smoke leaves you room through the windows or whatever, the spirits/bad vibes/etc leave with it

You don’t have to believe everything you read

Witchcraft is how YOU feel about things. No matter how other people feel about things

You can have your own corresponces for things

Like I think cinnamon is hot, deals with the sun, direction south, used for healing love etc., but it can be totally different for you

Divination doers do not have to be witches and witches do not have to be divination doers

Can not stress this enough. This is the best thing to do even if you can not practice your craft where you are atm. knowledge is power.

So here is a list I’ve complied :D (yes I’ve made all of these, I was too bored to ask people’s permission to add things, sue me) (All of the spells are all religion inclusive)

Witch Safety Tips

I love the witchblr community but sometimes witches share spells, recipes and “how-tos” without doing the proper research first. So I just wanted to share some of my safety tips when it comes to witchcraft.

✔️ Always research any herbs or other plants that are in spells, recipes, or rituals that you find online. Sometimes witches (unintentionally) share information that isn’t correct or that they haven’t researched themselves. It’s always best to do your own research when it comes to anything that you will be ingesting or putting on your skin.

✔️ Be wary of purchasing spells or anything related to witchcraft or the occult that is “intangible” online. I’m not saying don’t buy them but make sure you do a little background checking (check the seller’s social media accounts, blogs and shop) before you commit to any purchases.

✔️ Don’t bury jars. This is more of an earth safety tip but just don’t bury any plastic or glass containers. They don’t biodegrade. Instead opt for something made from organic materials like cotton, wool or paper. And make sure whatever you bury is safe for the earth :)

✔️ If you’re burning incenses or herbs make sure your in a well ventilated area. Open your window, or back door (if you can). And it’s advised that you don’t burn anything around small animals, their little baby lungs can’t handle the smoke.

✔️ If you want to start a garden, or get indoor plants and have pets be sure to research and make sure the plants aren’t poisonous to your fur babies. Just because a plant isn’t poisonous to us, doesn’t mean it’s not poisonous to your pets.

✔️ Also research crystals, if you plan to work with them. If you plan to make elixirs with them be sure they aren’t poisonous and that they are suitable to be in water. You don’t want to ruin your shinny pretties lol.

✔️ Always, always, always do your research. Make sure that whatever you’re putting in your body or on your body (or your pets body) is safe.

✔️ Never leave a candle unattended <— this is just common knowledge but I wanted to throw this in here because I ruined many altar clothes because of this lol.

That’s all the witch safety tips I can think of right now. If you have more, feel free to add on to the list. And please be safe.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What are your feelings when fashion designers incorporate tarot symbols and imagery? Do you love it, or do you worry that it devalues the spiritual meaning behind the cards? 🌟

Full Moon Tea

First part you will need:
Mason Jar
Full Moon

Fill up the mason jar with water and lid it. Put out under a full moon to soak up all that energy. Bring back inside next day.

Second part you will need:
Tea of choice. (I personally like berry type teas for the spell)
Mug of choice
Sugar or honey.

Use your Moon Water and make tea with it. After you’ve heated and steeped the tea, add your preference of sweetener. (If you don’t care for sweet tea then just a pinch for affect will suffice)

Now stir. Stir for a good minute, slowly.
While stirring, hum. Doesn’t matter if you can carry a tune or not. Just get lost in the vibrations of your voice and the swirling of the Moon Water Tea.

After around a minute, take the tea and sip. Take your time. Really enjoy your tea. Do so in a quiet room with either silence or water sounds. Get lost in the moment.

Repeat as often as you would like until out of Moon Water.

May it bring you peace if you so which it.

Journaling Prompts for Witches

Having trouble breaking in your new journal? or maybe you feel like you have nothing to say. Hopefully these prompts help you out a little.

✏️ Make monthly or seasonal vision boards

✏️ Write a short story about each moon phase

✏️ Write a poem about each element

✏️ Write a letter to your future self about your goals, put it in a sealed envelope and glue it into your journal. Don’t open it until the end of the year.

✏️ Paint, draw, or collage what magic looks or feels like

✏️ Make a list of colors, write about how each color makes your feel and what you associate with each color

✏️ Describe what it looks like outside your window and how your surroundings can help aid you in your craft.

Those are, hopefully, some fun prompts to help get you into the journaling spirit this new year.

I’m gonna get some beef for this but I have something I need to make clear…

JEWISH WITCHES ARE A THING AND ARE VALID. Being Jewish could refer to the religion OR the culture. Its possible to have one without the other. Someone who comes from a Jewish family can take part in Jewish customs and traditions while also practicing witchcraft.

Even if you are Jewish in the religious sense and are also a witch, YOU ARE VALID. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

This also goes for christian witches and any other culture/religion under the sun…

Witchy Reminder

Practicing magick and witchcraft doesn’t automatically make you a satanist or a wiccan. Some witches are satanists, and some witches are wiccan, but just being a witch doesn’t make you one.

There are witches of all different religions - even Christianity. There are lots of witches who aren’t affiliated with any religion at all.

One more time: Being a witch doesn’t automatically determine your religion! You can practice magick regardless of religion!

(1) small jar

(some) blessed thistle - not a lot, but like a good pinch

(some) burdock - again, not a ton

(1) piece of obsidian

(1) piece of apache tears

(1) piece of Botswana agate

(1) piece of smoky quartz

(1) piece of jet

(1) small black candle

1. Cast circle or clear energy or whatever you do before you ritual.

2. Cleanse ingredients - moon water, salt, energy, whatever.

3. Combine ingredients in jar.

4. Charge jar by sleeping with or putting it under the light of the moon or burying it or sticking it into running water (cap it tightly, first tho).

5. During full moon/new moon (whichever feels right for you), do your ritual thing, set candle upright in jar, and burn it. Let the wax seep into the herbs (WARNING: the herbs burn very easily and will make loud, scary popping noises. Avoid lighting the herbs on fire).

6. When candle is burned, cap your jar and stick it under your bed or in your closet.

You made a Protection Spell Jar! Your Jar’s ingredients have been specifically chosen for their protective, grounding, and negativity-clearing attributes. YOU making the jar has coded that protection to your energy! Keeping your Jar under your bed or in your closet (two of the most personal spaces we occupy on a daily basis) will allow it to suck up any negative energy that has been directed at you and provide you with protection.

Please note: Jar will absorb negative energy. Buy supplies in bulk if possible and make a new jar every 6 mos - 1 year.

Do away with your old, negativity filled jar by:

-thanking it for its help
-releasing the negative energy back to the universe to be recycled
-burying the herbs
-and finally giving the jar and stones a good cleansing!

(Please practice responsible witchcraft: this spell DOES involve use of fire. Always have a fire extinguisher at the ready and do NOT leave flames unattended. Thank you for your time.)

if all witchcraft is to you is intent, then what’s the point of even using ingredients and supplies? you could essentially get the same outcome by just speaking the words. why even bother using candles, herbs, incense, oils, crystals or whatever else? if everything is ultimately pointless, then what’s the point of it all?

i’d love to hear all of your thoughts on this.

Using Music in Magic

(Or, why singing in magic is a cool thing.)

The following is an excerpt from my witching book. Please do not repost this text without acknowledging the source. Thank you!

Using music in magic can add another layer of intent to a ritual, spell, or general working. Adding music that the practitioner feels is appropriate can really raise the energy and work in the witch’s favor. This can be done by playing a recorded song, playing an instrument, singing, or whatever method you choose.

My belief is that by singing, you are embracing all five of the Elements: the earthen body, the water within, the fire of life, the air to produce sound, and the spirit in song. I find that this adds a personal bit to your magic and also helps to embrace the sacred, as well as really raising the energy to do work.

Considering that music is also the main art medium that I work with, I also view it as an offering of mine to the Divine: I’m giving my breath, my air, my voice, and a part of my very soul in the form of a song.

Music, especially in a rhythmic sense, has also been used to help shamans, medicine people, and cunning folk to raise their energy for their works for thousands of years. I feel that by connecting music making to my craft, I not only bring a very personal part of myself to it, but I am connecting with those who came before who did very similar things. In this way, I feel that the inclusion of making music in the craft ties us to the magic, to the tradition, and to each other.

Thanks for reading! If people are interested in hearing more about music and magic, let me know in the comments and reblogs and I’ll consider making a series of it! ✨

I am a pagan nanny, for a Christian family.

So, I am a nanny for a very Christian family, that family of which fired me when they found out about my spiritual path. However they since apologized, and I have received my job back. These kids that I nanny go to a Christian private school. This means dress codes. At this school colored hair is not allowed, you cannot have piercings or tattoos, your pants must always be at least to your knees. No tank tops, no sweat pants, only business casual clothing. And on Thursday’s they must dress super nice for Chapel. The oldest of the two that I care for has informed me that her class mates have created a nickname for me, “Punk” and on top of that, they have all said I look like the devil. I have 5 small tattoos, nose piercing, and bright green hair, and I do not conform to their standards of “modesty”. Every time I get out of my car to take the kids to an extracurricular activity such as sports or clubs, I receive the most judgemental stares from the grown ups, the faculty and the parents. This is the reason I am not longer Christian, but on top of that, my favorite thing to do when picking up the kids, is blast my pagan music in the pick up line!

I’ve come up with a fun list of areas in witchcraft you should start working on based on your zodiac sign. This is based on the common personality traits related to each sign.

♈ Aries: Sigils

♉ Taurus: Crystals

♊ Gemini: Spells

♋ Cancer: Tarot

♌ Leo: Candle Magick

♍ Virgo: Kitchen Magick

♎ Libra: Meditation

♏ Scorpio: Astral Projection

♐ Sagittarius: Ritual Magick

♑ Capricorn: Herblism

♒ Aquarius: Astrology

♓ Pisces: Spirit Work

Of course you can study and practice whatever you like, this is just something I did for fun. So have fun!

The High Priestess.

Listen to your inner voice. Trust the words spoken by your heart. Focus on self awareness. Do not be mislead by a waking world. Follow your subconscious. Be mindful of your dreams and symbols that may normally go unseen. The enlightened mind is one that chooses to share knowledge, it does not use knowledge solely for self serving purposes.

Simple Prayer Spell.

Light a candle of your choosing and sit before it. (Usually works better to focus on the candle if it’s in a quiet, dark, and somewhat open nonflammable place)
I come to thee by flickering light
I bow before your piercing sight
View my soul and hear my prayer
My love to you always this is swear.

Continue with your prayer.
Once done, thank them for listening and use a few drops of water to extinguish the candle. Return to that candle with the beginning part each time you wish to pray that way.

Potion for the Broom-Closet Witch!

Hey all! I have been using this AWESOME sleep potion at night, and it works so well! And it can pass off as a normal recipe, so it’s perfect for those in the broom closet! Here is the recipe:
🌟A mug of milk
🌟A lil’ bit of honey
🌟The teeniest drop of vanilla extract
🌟Microwave the milk until it froths (for me, its about 1 minute 35 seconds)
🌟Add a tiny TINY drop of vanilla extract.
🌟Stir in about a tablespoon of honey (you can use less if you wish)
🌟Stir it clockwise and repeat your intent either outloud or in your head. I normally say: “I will feel calm, and fall asleep easily”. You can say it as many times as you wish
🌟BAM! You are done! You can sip it while chilling in bed before you go to sleep and be proud of yourself for making a potion

I hope this was helpful to you all! It works wonderfully for me, and I hope it does the same for you! It seems ordinary enough to your family, so it’s great for closeted witches. Enjoy! 👋🏻
