It dawned on me one day: Who cares if I fail, I am going to try. I am going to try everything I have ever wanted to do even if I fall flat on my face. The day is too short to spend the night with regrets.
Stephen Christian from Anberlin and anberlinlyrics. Explaining one of the meanings behind the song “Velvet Covered Brick”
Anberlin’s announcement of 2014 being their final year, lead to me finally getting this done, after talking about it for 4 years.
I got the idea from lyrics found in the first verse of “Alexithymia,” which are: “…to the sound of the record player, with it’s jumping needle and the lights that grow dimmer in time” and then obviously the chorus lyrics “there’s more to living than being alive."
Cannot wait to show it to the band when I see them at Warped in June. =]
A few years before Anberlin even started, the fact of the matter is that me, Joey and Deon stood on this stage in a very small, very small little band. We were actually at a talent show right here in house of blues Orlando. We lost the competition. I think the fact of the matter is, you know, here, a few guys from a very small town very close to here, can make it on this stage, and you actually care about us….. I think if we can make it you can make it. You know, at the end of the day we’re nothing, in 50 years, in 100 years, our name will be forgotten….. But I hope at the end of the day we live in your hearts, we live in your minds. And if we can just influence you to follow your dreams and passions in life then we’ve absolutely succeeded. I don’t care where you’re from, I don’t care if you’re from Ocala, Odessa, Winter Haven, I don’t care. You can make a difference in everyone’s lives. You can make a difference in the people around you’s lives, tonight, tomorrow, in your children’s lives, in your grandchildren’s lives: you can make a difference. And if we as Anberlin could just set any type of inspiration in your life then all of this is worth it. So I don’t care if you want to be a doctor, or a lawyer, or a teacher, or a painter, I don’t care if there’s musicians in the crowd, or pastors, whatever it is that you have set out to be, I know, I KNOW, I KNOW you can make it. I’m saying this here on behalf of 5 men that don’t deserve any of this. We don’t deserve you, we don’t deserve each other, we don’t deserve all of this, but the fact of the matter is: 5 guys from a small town followed their dreams and passions in life and have had the opportunity to be here tonight in front of you. Thank you very much.
