Chris was a lightly built boy with intense eyes and a lot of nervous habits, like coughing in the middle of every sentence. He wouldn’t be into Commem Day or woodchopping competitions; he was more into the Grateful Dead, Hieronymus Bosch, and computers. He was also known for writing poetry and using more illegal substances than you’d find in the average police laboratory. His motto was ‘If it grows, smoke it’. Ninety per cent of the school thought he was weird, ten per cent thought he was a legend, everybody thought he was a genius.

As you become older you realize that truly special moments only come along every so often.  So when these moments come … This past weekend, I had the pleasure to help a couple in our church raise money for their adoption of young Jeremiah who currently is living in South Korea.  As you know adoptions are very costly and require a relentless approach to paperwork, prayer and fundraising.

I have known Dustin & Katie Leonard since I moved to Las Cruces in 2006.  Dustin either was recovering or in remission of Hodgkin Lymphoma cancer at the time as a young man.  He is my age and so he was in his early or mid twenties when he had to fight this battle with his wife who steadily stood by his side.  Their testimony which I really am not able to do justice is one of many angles and twists but simply just points to Grace.  Which leads me back to this weekend.

Dustin & Katie had started an adoption ministry at Grace Covenant Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico to help other couples and individuals who are looking for guidance in the adoption process.  I could give you the one line answer of why Dustin & Katie want to adopt from South Korea but what is more important is the example and leadership they are setting in our community.  They are devout Christians who believe in God’s grace and love.  They are committed to bringing God’s love to others in our community and that in itself is a huge blessing.

When Dustin announced that they were going to have a fundraiser by working on a widows house, I was struck by how brilliant this idea was.  Both Hands is an organization that specializes in helping couples raise money through this process and what a blessing this process has been to everyone involved.

We were initially asked to come and write letters to individuals we knew who may be interested in sponsoring us for the day (much like sponsoring a golfer for a golf tournament). Two weeks later cars & trucks were pulling up to the widows house.  Tools were dispatched, little children were laughing and the Grace of God was upon the morning.  The morning went swiftly as I teamed up with a friend of mine named Kyle and we started on some shed doors that were hanging by a few screws and a prayer.  As we worked you could smell the freshly cut grass, the scent of new paint being applied and visually see the smiles of everyone working happily to accomplish the task at hand.  There was true excitement that this entire day was not about us individually but it was about love.  True love that we should display daily.  No questions, no excuses, just commitment to each other unconditionally.  As the sun closed down behind the trees and the quiet breeze touched our skin we were reminded of what can truly happen in a single day when we come together as a community.

The experience of God’s grace.

Tomorrow When the War Began - Chris’ Story

I was generally dissatisfied with the way Chris was portrayed in the film (completely changing the depth of his character and personality as described in the books).

That said, I very much enjoy this scene.

Ellie: Take it easy?
Chris: Yeah, I just shut my eyes for a second.
Ellie: Don’t you understand how it’s all changed, Chris? Don’t you get it?
Chris: Yeah, I do. I do get it.
Ellie: If we take it easy any more we might as well shoot each other now and get it over with.
Chris: Okay, I get it. I do. I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry. (muttering) Must be that time of the month.
Ellie: Shoot me.
Chris: What are you doing?
Ellie: Go on Chris, shoot me!
Chris: I don’t wanna shoot you.
Ellie: You can’t kill me when I’m awake?
Chris: Geez, Ellie, it was an accident, I’m sorry!
Ellie: Bullshit you’re sorry! People are dying out there, Chris. Families have been split apart. We’ve seen homes blown to pieces. Yet you’re up here having a fucking vacation! So go on. Don’t wait for me to fall asleep. Buck up, be a man, look me in the eye and pull the trigger.
