chris keller

one tree hill (23 september 2003- 4 april 2012)

It’s the oldest story in the world. One day, you’re 17 and playing for someday, and then quietly and without you really noticing, someday is today, and then someday is yesterday, and this is your life. We spend so much time wanting, pursuing, wishing. But ambition is good, chasing things with integrity is good, dreaming. If you had a friend you knew you’d never see again, what would you say? If you could do one last thing for someone you love, what would it be? Say it. Do it. Don’t wait. Nothing lasts forever. Make a wish and place it in your heart. Anything you want, everything you want. Do you have it? Good. Now believe it can come true. You never know where the next miracle’s going to come from, the next memory, the next smile, the next wish come true. But if you believe that it’s right around the corner, you open your heart and mind to the possibility of it, to the certainty of it, you just might get the thing you’re wishing for. The world is full of magic. You just have to believe in it. So make your wish. Do you have it? Good. Now believe in it with all your heart.

As someone who had been in the oth fandom for a while, i kinda find it funny how people still rant about Chris kissing Haley and calling it cheating but yet don't for when Carrie kissed Nathan it wasn't. Why do you think people seem to forgive Nathan for his mistakes but Haley doesn't get forgiven

I didn’t even realize that was an argument that circulates around the fandom. But thinking on it, I would have to say…

1- I think that authors intent was to really create an “emotional affair” between Haley and Chris as opposed to just a “physical attraction” that brewed between Carrie and Nathan. Haley definitely “fell for Chris” to an extent and felt he “got her” in ways that Nathan didn’t. Nathan, on the other hand, wasn’t falling for Carrie, or actively pursuing her, he just let her cross the line physically.

2- After Haley and Chris kiss, things escalate. I mean, a week goes by after Carrie kisses Nate and then Haley finds them in the shower but Nathan is in the process of being like “GTFO YOU CRAZY HOE”, etc, already shutting her down on his own. Haley, on the other hand, met Chris at the bus station and kissed him a  second time, and then went on tour with the guy, leaving Nathan alone and broken. And even after all that, when he went to see her, or tried to fix it, she basically  just pushed him away over and over again and did relatively nothing to substantiate her love for him. She even let some guy on TV call Chris and her a couple.

I think they were both in the wrong and they were both unbelievably selfish in their respective moments of weakness. I think Nathan’s indiscretion was still cheating, but I think it sprang from a desire to feel wanted after being sort of ignored by his wife (not excusing it, just saying). Haley was getting all the love she could ask for from Nate, but she still went with Chris. Which means that their “relationship” was something totally separate from her and Nate, and that makes it stronger, makes her a little bit more in the wrong, somehow.

Regardless, I loved the Chris Keller storyline for many reasons. First and foremost, the obvious: We got Chris Keller, and he was an amazing character. Two, I always had felt up until the Chris arc that Haley loved Nathan a little more than he loved her, and that their relationship in some ways was unbalanced. Plus, she was always super self conscious about herself and their relationship and was always doubting it. Going out on tour with Chris kind of shifted all that, and seeing Nathan heartbroken the way he was,was one of the best storylines/arcs the Nathan character was ever given, and the show ever did in general. It was fucking gut wrenching, amazingly written/directed/acted television (and that’s saying a lot, because sometimes I felt James Lafferty could play things super stale). If anything, I would have been OK with them pushing the Chris thing a little farther (as in, hearing Haley admit she had feelings for him and her going on tour was at least a little bit about him, because come fucking on-  it was. Or, her actually being responsible for some of those IM messages that “Taylor” sent , although I was never sure it was made clear if it actually WAS Taylor sending those messages or not, kind of ambiguous to me).

Overall,  the Keller arc was way way WAY better than the Nanny Carrie arc, in my opinion. Carrie had no motive for what she did and we never get any explanations. Sure, she lost a kid…OK? So was she already psycho? Had she done this before? I mean I have 5x as much back story on Jules and she was way less of a batshit arc. Also, the whole thing was pretty OOC for Nate, because suddenly out of no where, he’s toying with his attraction to this woman, with no build up whatsoever. With Chris and Haley, we got SO much from that arc, and it moved the plot along in so many different and wonderful ways, and helped so many different characters develop, and Chris Keller turned out to be way more than just a one time plot device (although it would have been nice to find out more about him, too).
