How the Dads Got Primary Custody of Their Children

(Excluding Mat, Robert, and Dadsona, whose situations are all canonically death of the spouse)

While Craig and Ashley started (and still work on) their business as a team Ashley was always more single-minded about it, and involved in all the most time-consuming aspects. When they finally accepted that their marriage was over they sat down, had a long, longtalk, and reached the conclusion that Craig was in a better position to take care of the girls full time. However, their relationship post-divorce is very amicable, and Ashley still regularly makes time to see her kids.

Brian’s S/O was an ambitious workaholic. It never bothered Brian until Daisy grew past infancy and they started constantly pushing her to do more, do better, aim higher. The last thing Brian wanted was for his daughter to grow up in a broken home, but when he realised how much it was impacting Daisy’s self esteem (and how much of her childhood she was missing out on) he decided enough was enough. He left, and won full custody of Daisy without much of a fight. He doesn’t know how to repair the damage his ex did, but he’s determined that his beloved daughter is never going to have to live without the praise she deserves ever again.

Hugo’s ex is a free-spirit artsy type. For a long time they had a great relationship, but as they got older (especially after Ernest came along) their individual goals started to diverge, and it became clear that the lives they’d both come to want where just too incompatible. When it came to the custody battle Hugo was the one with the stable career and the good income, so he was the one granted primary custody. Ernest’s other dad gets him on weekends and some holidays, and Hugo has resigned himself to his role as the unfavoured parent.

Damien became pregnant relatively early in his relationship with his S/O, before they’d had the chance to properly discuss the idea of children. S/O couldn’t handle the idea and bolted, leaving Damien alone. Damien briefly considered an abortion – he wasn’t confident of his ability to raise a child by himself, and keeping it would cost him the money he’d put aside for his transition and set him back several years. However, he’d also always wanted to be a dad, and who knew when the chance would come along again? He decided to raise his kid on his own, and found that the gap his S/O had left in his life vanished the moment Lucien was born.

When Joseph and Mary finally decide that they’re doing more harm than good, the custody battle is over almost as soon as it’s begun – Joseph is an upstanding and important member of his community, Mary is an alcoholic and provably neglectful of her children. To her surprise, Robert comes to Mary’s aid not as a drinking buddy or sympathetic ear, but as the tough love no one else will give her. He has, as he points out, been estranged from his child himself, and as much as he loves Mary he’s not going to tell her she’s a fit mother when she isn’t. Eventually Mary resolves to clean up her act, both for herself and in the hope of one day being allowed more than occasional supervised visitation rights. Joseph, for his part, works hard to give his children a loving home, and regularly sends Mary updates on how they’re all getting on.

Ahhhh can I request headcannons for the dads when their kid gets married?? (Bonus for Dadsona and Amanda!!!!)

i got this bro -dad dan

Mat and Carmensita- Mat insists on having the wedding at his coffee shop, casually decorating the store with white drapes and flowers. He closes his store for a day and spends a long time baking a cake and pastries for a small buffet table. It would be a super chill and cozy wedding with acoustic music and slow dancing. During the vows, Mat gives Carmensita and her spouse matching daisy flower crowns. They aren’t the best crowns, but he did his best making them, staying up all night watching a youtube tutorial on how to braid them. He’s emotional when it’s all over. He’s happy for Carmensita- it reminds him how he felt when he got married.

Brian and Daisy- Brian goes all out because his daughter deserves only the best. They have the wedding in the backyard of his house. Brian rents lots of white chairs and tables, and asks the guests to bring home baked food for the buffet table. He builds a little gazebo for them to say their vows in and paints it white. He sat in it for a while and got really sad and emotional because his daughter is gonna say her vows in it, right where he’s sitting. When the wedding finally comes around the entire family is there, and he’s beaming as he walks her down the aisle.

Craig and Briar/Hazel/River- Craig had been a little sad since all the girls moved out for college. When Briar and Hazel got married, they decided to combine their wedding into one huge event. But when River got married, the sisters agreed to have it at the abandoned softball field they used to play at. When Craig hears this he’s estatic. He starts cleaning up the field and helping the girls with all the arrangements. During the wedding he can’t stop crying because oh god that’s his baby. Grown up. Getting married. When everyone’s gone the four of them play catch with each other (imagine the twins going into a professional softball league? yes)

Joseph and  Chris/Christie/Christian/Crish- He rents out a beach for all of his kids’ weddings. He hires a choir, a mini band, a bartender for a minibar, as well as a high-end catering service. He invites everyone in the church and the entire family. Joseph spares no expense for all four weddings- the decorations, food, and music are all the best he could get. He tries to be happy during the wedding, but he can’t- he’s worried that they’ll end up in a marriage like his and Mary’s. He hopes that- maybe, if the wedding is nice enough- they’d be happy.

Hugo and Ernest- As Ernest grew older, he grew closer with Hugo. He was the first person Ernest told when he got engaged. Early on in high school he discovered his love for animals- he went to the zoo and aquarium with Hugo a lot. They decide to plan the wedding at the aquarium. During the ceremony the guests can’t stop looking at the fish, a penguin gives birth, and someone sets off a fire alarm (Lucien, probably), but Hugo couldn’t be happier for Ernest.

Damien and Lucien- Damien thought Lucien would want a great wedding- something extravagant with a big venue and gorgeous decorations. But after talking to him about the preparations, it became apparent that Lucien had too much anxiety for a huge event like that. Instead, Damien went to the courthouse with Lucien and his spouse. They signed papers there and had a small party afterwards. Damien was excited for Lucien all the same and was still incredibly excited the entire time.

Robert and Val- Val invites Robert up to Brooklyn for the wedding. When Robert got the invitation, he couldn’t believe it- partly because he was invited, and partly because she was engaged and he didn’t know. The surprise turned into guilt, and the guilt turned into panic. He had no idea what he was going to get her. Even though she assured him that he didn’t need to get her a gift, he found a perfect one- something he knows she’s wanted since she was a kid. At the wedding, he gives her a small Boston Terrier- and she loves it.

Dadsona and Amanda- Dadsona was surprised when Amanda announced she was getting married. She said she didn’t want to make a big deal out of it- which reminded the Dad of the last time they had a celebration. Dadsona planned the wedding in the backyard and surprised Amanda with it, just like he did at her graduation party. Dadsona gets emotional while setting everything up- a small, cheesy wedding with a mac bar and ice cream cake. He invites all the dads in the cul de sac and their kids. Dadsona watches Amanda and her spouse sit under the cherry blossom tree, just like he did when he fell in love.

The DDADDS in Highschool

Craig: Probably flirted with literally everyone including the teachers. Had beef with the baseball coach, though he was a phenomenal shortstop.

Brian: Student council member, competitive in academics and a total teacher’s pet. Was on the bowling team and probably destroyed the competition.

Damien: Was totally a band geek and played the clarinet. Got stuffed in a trashcan twice. His baby bat emergence started his freshman year. Wore fishnets under ripped jeans before it was cool.

Hugo: Always showed up to club meetings. Somehow was able to grow a full mustache by the end of sophomore year. Joined the wrestling team but broke his arm halfway through the season. Also got stuffed in a trashcan.

Mat: Also a band geek, played some funky sax. Was in a lot of art classes and took photos for the yearbook. Was never really bothered by anyone but he was just as shy as he is currently.

Robert: We don’t talk about high school. He actually did surprisingly well in school in part to his upbringing at home. Despite that he was still a bit of a trouble maker at least outside of school and swooned many with his traditional bad boy looks.

Joseph: Jock with a good reputation. Wasn’t as religious as he is now and he hot boxed the locker room once and got away with it. Earned the nickname Kush Christiansen cause he rolled the best blunts.
