choose words carefully

Folks often act like you need to be some sort of math genius to be a computer programmer, but in practice, I find that my skills as a writer end up helping me more than my skills as a mathematician.

Programming is basically explaining what you want to happen.

Just, like, you’re explaining it to a helpful but exceedingly literal-minded space alien from the Eleventh Dimension who’s only had physical existence described to them, so you need to choose your words carefully!

  2. “I really didn’t want to have to hurt you.”
  3. “Next time I won’t miss on purpose, so choose your words carefully.”
  4. “Did I not warn you to never cross me again?”
  5. “You’re the one with a blade at my throat, so obviously you’re upset.”
  6. “I get that you’re angry, but is it really necessary to bring weapons into this?”
  7. “That could have killed me!”
  8. “If I wanted you dead, this room would be a lot quieter.”
  9. “I’m not trying to kill you, I just wanted to get your attention.”
  10. “It’s kinda hard to concentrate when you can slice open my stomach at any second.”
  11. “Please don’t stab me with that thing; I’ll get tetanus if I survive!”
  12. “I’ll drop the weapon if you drop the phone.”
  13. “Is-is that a real sword? Do you even know how to use it?”
  14. “If I get nervous I start stabbing things, so no sudden movements, please.”
  15. “Yes, I know how to use this, so I’d be a lot more polite if I were you.”
  16. “So this is why you’re not allowed near sharp pointy objects.”
  17. “I’m supposed to be afraid of a bread knife? It’s not even that sharp!”
  18. “You have about a minute to convince me not to bury this in your heart.”
  19. “I’m the one with the knife, which means I’m the one who gets to ask the questions.”
  20. “That’s not a toy, put it down!”

Something They Don’t Know

Prompt: In which Daveed Diggs is asked how he comes up with his lyrics during an interview. Told in his POV.

Warning: Smut.

A/N: Day 5 of the write-a-thon. Of course I would post this early when all I’ve been complaining about is not having enough time to write. Oh well. Also, I’m sure Nadeska Alexis is a cool girl, I just needed her to behave this certain way to get the story going. Enjoy!

Daveed slips his phone into his pocket and stood to give Nadeska Alexis a handshake once she enters the dressing room, Lin’s advice on how to handle the tricky reporter reverberating in his mind. Having done the Complex interview with Chance previously, he warned him about her ruthlessness and her inclination to pry for scandalous information she could share with her readers. Lin told Daveed to be polite, courteous, and above all, smile through the “little white lies” he would have to tell.

“Mr. Diggs, it’s unfortunate that the rest of the crew couldn’t make it,” she says, turning on her recorder and sliding it on the table that separated them, “but I’m glad you were able to come in despite the late notice.”

Daveed lets out a nervous chuckle when she ignores his gesture, his hand still awkwardly hovering between the two of them, and opts to bring out her notebook and pen from her purse instead. He was never the best with interviews, especially when he was by himself, dressed in clothes he couldn’t afford and sitting in a room that was too sophisticated for his tastes. He wished William and Jonathan were here – they understood his ineptness when it came to talking to new people and would definitely take over the interview. But since they couldn’t, he had to man up and promote the new album releasing in a week.

Nadeska sits, and Daveed follows suit, watching as she flips to a page full of questions that she’s prepared. Luckily, the first few questions were predictable –  how he adjusted to life after Hamilton, his role in Blackish, the release of the album, and the upcoming tour -  all he could answer easily and truthfully. But when she suddenly leans forward, a gleam in her eyes that screamed trouble, Daveed knew it was time to make use of Lin’s advice: smile through the little white lies.

“So, clipping doesn’t exactly have the most innocent songs,” Nadeska hums, choosing her words carefully, “and some of them require a repeat listen. Your lyrics are curt but very complex, Mr. Diggs.  Mind if I throw a few lines at you to elaborate on? And if you could perhaps share what, or who, inspired you to write them?”

Elsewhere University- Feathers (part 2)

part one   EDIT: part three

Hey there!! Once again, playing in @charminglyantiquated‘s sandbox. the original comic this was inspired by can be found here (go read it!!), and the blog for everything Elsewhere is @elsewhereuniversity

Previously:

(For all that you belong here, have the dirt and salt and scent and feathers to prove it, for all that, Elsewhere has a hold of you now. Time to see which hold is stronger.)

Part 2:

You go through security, board the plane. None of the metals pull at your bones. Just to see if you can, you spin fanciful lies about yourself as you make conversation with your seat mate.

(The words want to stick in your throat, but you’re mostly sure that’s from years (and years and years) of choosing your words ever so carefully with strangers, and not for any less …mundane a reason.)

Harry Styles interview: Music is 'like therapy,' and 'honesty' is his drug
The' self-titled debut album from the One Direction singer comes out Friday.

Promoting a new album is hard work, and for Harry Styles, that work involves gamely commenting on One Direction fan-fiction theories.

“Oh, is that a thing?” he said, amused by the internet chatter linking his new song Sweet Creature to his 1D bandmate Louis Tomlinson. “Well, whatever it is that it makes one feel. But I think if you listen to the lyrics, you can work out what it’s about.”

Styles’ charming, British-accented modesty aside, the 23-year-old One Direction singer is poised to become one of the world’s biggest pop stars with the release of his self-titled debut album (out Friday), a collection of music that Styles describes as “songs about stories, and another group of songs delving into, ‘Why did I feel like that.’”

His first single Sign of the Times was a Biblically-epic debut, drawing comparisons to David Bowie and Elton John, a logical progression from the classic-rock nostalgia heard on One Direction’s final two albums. But Styles, and his similarly-aged fans, grew up in an era of music where genre distinctions have melted together, and his album spends just as much time dabbling in twangy folk and modern alt-pop than the stadium-rock of his former band.

Rejection

Marinette and Chat Noir stood in silence. She shifted her gaze towards him for just a moment, trying to find the right words to say. She had wanted to ask him about his life. Who he was, to be more precise. It had been bouncing around her mind for some time now, despite what she had said as Ladybug. She wanted to know the boy beneath the mask, really know him. So much to the point she was willing to throw caution to the wind.

She couldn’t say when the curiosity started. Maybe it was sometime through their talks,  when he would rant to her about his day with such vagueness that it almost irked her. She was a naturally curious person, and often it got her into trouble. Especially as Ladybug. Could she ask him? Would he tell her or would he scorn her for asking such a ridiculous question? She sighed, her eyes now looking at the streets below. Chat took notice, his ears twitching in her direction as he looked at her.

“Is everything alright, Princess?” He asked, taking note of her change in mood. He only got a shrug in reply, the corner of his lips tugging down in a frown. “You know you can talk to me, Mari. Right?” This time, she gave a nod,the faintest of smiles gracing her lips.

“I know, Chat. It’s just something that has been bothering me for some time now. And I’m not sure how to go about it.” She murmured, managing to meet his stunning green eyes that seemed to peer into her very soul. Her breath hitched in her throat, her body seeming to freeze up on her. How could she ask him? Would it affect their current relationship?

“Well, all my ears are alert and willing to listen.” He gave her one of his softer smiles, one she adored and took comfort in. God how she loved this stray cat. Marinette took a breath, leaning her head against his shoulder.

“Thank you, Kitty. I suppose that… talking about it would help.”

He lead her to the lounge chair she often used for sunbathing in the summer, and on occasion an extra place for plants, sitting her down with an ease only Chat had. He took the end for himself, crossing his legs and clasping his hands together in his lap. His tail flicked in curiosity behind him. She looked like a nervous breakdown waiting to happen. He felt his heart constrict at the look in her eyes.

“I… Chat, who are you?” She asked tentatively, her bluebell eyes searching his in desperation. He froze. His heart stopped. She had just asked a forbidden question. He tried to speak, opening his mouth, closing it when no words came out. He swallowed hard and took a breath, choosing his words carefully.

“Marinette… you know I can’t answer that.”

“Please, Chat…” She pressed, tears pricking her eyes. She was in love with someone she knew little about, yet so much at the same time. It was almost killing her not to know. “It’s driving me insane. I fell so hard and I hardly know you. Everything late night talk, every stupid, crappy movie we’ve watched, every time you’ve helped me with stupid, senseless little problems. Even helping me with designs, every smile you’ve caused, and I can’t even thank you properly.” Tears dripped down her cheeks now, her fingers gripping her pink sweatpants tightly as she averted her gaze, looking away from him.

He sat there in silence, taking in her words slowly. She loved him? She treasured him so much that she wanted to thank him for things he was happy to do? What do I do? If I tell her, she’ll be in danger, along with everyone she loves… I can’t do that to her. Even if I want nothing more than to show my princess who I really am, her safety trumps my desires. He shook his head, sliding his clawed gloves to either side of her face, thumbs resting on her cheeks as his fingers slid to her neck.

Marinette blinked, forcing herself to look at him. Once she did, he covered her lips with his own in a tender, sweet kiss. Her face flushed, heat spreading through her body and curling around her heart. Once he pulled away, she dared to meet his eyes. He gave a saddened grin. It was his turn to speak.

“Mari, Princess… I love you. Everything about you. Your smile, your laugh, the way you tap your foot when you lose patience with my puns, when you crack a pun, the way your eyes light up and sparkle when you get a new idea in your head and just have to sketch it then, when you’re dancing and singing your heart out to Jagged Stone, your baking skills, which could rival the best in the world, that blush you get when I compliment you that blends so beautifully with your freckles, especially your freckles… your eyes, and just your overall personality. I want nothing more than to tell you who I really am, believe me when I say this Marinette, but you mean so much more to me than you can imagine. And telling you would put you in danger. And everyone you care for… everyone you love…” He paused, images filling his mind at all the possibilities that could happen to her.

A wetness on his cheeks brought him out of his thoughts as he leaned his forehead against hers, closing his eyes as he cried. “I can’t lose you, Marinette… please understand that. Please…” The emotion in his voice was clear. He was scared, hurt, worried, and so much more. His body shook, his brain trying to chase away the horrid images of a lifeless Marinette just because she knew his identity. “I’m sorry…” He whispered, voice strained as he choked back a sob.

“It’s okay, I understand.” She placed her hands on his wrists, squeezing in an attempt to soothe him as she closed her eyes.

“I promise you that one day… one day…” He couldn’t finish his sentence, opening his emerald, teary eyes to gaze at her beautiful, yet heartbroken expression. His stomach felt as though it were in knots, guilt filling him as he rejected her request.

“Yes,” Her grip tightened on him. “One day.” She concluded, her lips curling into a sad, understanding smile. “But not today.”

Well, that took a while! This was just my idea of what happened in @australet789 Marichat May Day 18: Rejection art found

here . It’s a beautiful piece of work and they have such an amazing talent. This fic was inspired by the art drawn, so please give credit where credit is due!

force of habit. 12x10 coda. deancas. (ao3)

“Is this something we’re doing now?” Cas asks. “Being honest about how we feel?”

Dean looks up from his beer to find Cas staring at him, one eyebrow raised in a way that’s decidedly snarky. There’s something in the steadiness of Cas’ gaze, though, in the tilt of his head, that tells Dean it was an actual question and he expects an honest answer.

He had felt good earlier, after giving up the charade and admitting he wasn’t angry. It had felt nice to have things out in the open. He had relaxed, had told himself he could be honest and things would be all right, that he wouldn’t scare Cas off. He had wondered, for a few minutes, why he always felt the need to reign himself in, to bury his care and his concern under a facade. He had asked himself why he still bothered.

Dean sees, now, that he had just talked himself into becoming complacent. As soon as the words are out of Cas’ mouth, Dean’s heart suddenly starts doing double time. Ah, right, he thinks. That’s why. This is why he had changed the subject earlier, when Cas had made it clear he would die for them.

Dean still has limits that Cas seems uniquely excellent at pushing him to. He isn’t doing it on purpose, Dean thinks. It’s one of those human things he never quite got the hang of. Cas has always stood a little too close, stared a little too long. He’s always said things that unsettle Dean in a way he doesn’t quite understand, and this is no exception.

Oh come on girl, please don't be spreading false information and false hope about herbs and spices being cancer cures :(

hooooooly smokes

did i say herbs and spices were cancer cures???

I said that i started making juices for a loved one that contain ginger and turmeric because they have fantastic anti-cancer properties

After seeing this person’s body and mind be slowly destroyed through 3 years of chemotherapy and radiation, please allow me to share my thoughts on additional aids in healing their body and fighting tumour growth.

“Curcumin is the yellow pigment extracted from turmeric and is one of three known curcuminoids in turmeric. Curcumin has demonstrated incredible anti-cancer benefits. In countries where people eat turmeric daily at about 100 to 200 mg (roughly 1-2 teaspoons) over long periods of time, research has shown there to be lower rates of cancer. As far as research into turmeric and cancer, over 2,000 published studies have shown curcumin combats cancers of the breast, prostate, liver, colon, lung, pancreas and more. Many of these studies have shown curcumin actually stops cancer cells from dividing. Curcumin has also been shown to trigger apoptosis, or programmed cell death, which is the body’s natural and necessary way of ridding itself from damaged cells.”

Work today was fucking torture. It was too long, too boring and filled with too many morons. You can only fake being nice for so long, it’s exhausting.

Trying to get into a more relaxed head space, you decide to pamper yourself a bit. You down a much needed glass of wine then take a soothing bubble bath. Soon after you throw on a black mud mask that clarifies, it’s weird looking but it works awesome.

Deciding to give yourself a pedicure, you pick out a dark red nail polish and get yourself settled on the couch. Finally feeling a little more relaxed, you breathe a happy sigh for the peace and quiet.

“Y/N!”

Son of a bitch.

Friendship Is Nice. Friendship and Lingerie Is Nicer.

Summary: CS Modern AU. Friends to Lovers. Emma gets some new lingerie and, intending to get approval from her friends, accidentally sends some revealing pictures to the wrong group chat. Smut ensues.

Rated M. 6.6k words ~ also on ao3

Emma Swan has not owned a decent set of lingerie in far too long. It’s not as if she’s had anyone to wear it around, has had any need for it. The thought of needing an upgrade to her sexy wardrobe isn’t something her friends have needled her about in a while and therefore, hasn’t crossed her mind.

She’s just gotten her income tax money and seeing as she’s finally in a financially stable enough place in her life to not need to spend the money on bills, she takes a slightly reluctant but much-needed trip to the nearest mall. Too many unstylishly ripped jeans and torn t-shirts have been piling up in her wardrobe and, really, her lack of anything that ranges outside the bounds of leather and simple cotton is kind of sad.

She’s made a decent dent in her wallet—a couple of sheer shirts (who knew sheer was so in), a floral dress, a little black dress Ruby will whole-heartedly approve of, a nice green jacket that is decidedly not leather, and even a pencil skirt—when she passes the Victoria’s Secret.

The Secret (6)

prologue; part one; part two; part three; part four; part five; part six; part seven; part eight; part nine; part ten; part eleven; part twelve; part thirteen;

“Zoe, the movie’s about to start!” you shouted through your apartment, throwing a handful of popcorn into your mouth while the opening credits of another Disney film lit up your TV screen. This was how you spent your Sundays with Zoe, being lazy and watching movies while the weather grew colder outside. It was definitely colder in Seoul than what you were used to in your hometown.

Zoe came into the living room huffing and puffing with her lips pulled into a pout. “We can’t watch the movie. I can’t find Mr Snuggles,” she grumbled, climbing onto the sofa to check behind it.

“Have you checked the bathroom? You were giving Mr Snuggles a bath in the sink this morning,” you remembered, holding her hand so she could safely jump off the sofa and sprint out of the room again.

Five seconds later, Zoe’s voice echoed from the bathroom. “I found him!”

The Zodiac Signs Communication Styles

Aries: You’re an action person and like to communicate through deeds rather than words. Intellectual, vague and theoretic conversations can bore you. When you talk to others, you’ll be honest, open and sincere but sometimes just shutting up and listening is the better way to go. you have some things to learn about tact and diplomacy.

Taurus: Generally, you’re a quiet, easygoing person. You don’t like too much talk because there’s a tendency for you to be a little introverted and shy. You need time to think before you speak. When someone is talking “crap,” you can come up with a comment that puts them in their place (you can spot the phonies). This even surprises you in the process sometimes.
