chinese singers

“Heart of Glass” (Cover). Faye Wong (王菲). Live performance, Hong Kong, 2003.

Faye Wong (b. 1969) is a widely popular Chinese singer-songwriter and actress who rose to fame in the 1990s for singing Cantopop ballads. Born in Beijing, Wong moved to Hong Kong in 1987, where she decided to pursue a singing career despite her relatively uncommon status as a Mainlander in a Hong Kong industry. After undergoing several image-related and stylistic shifts, Wong ended up releasing bestselling records one after the other in the 1990s, catapulting herself to fame throughout the Sinophone world. Wong has also starred in several well-known Hong Kong films, including Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express (previously featured by sinθ here). Despite her immense fame, Wong is known for being reclusive from the media, disliking participating in interviews and uninterested in the profit-driven nature of the mainstream music industry.

While Faye Wong’s top songs throughout Asia are her ballads, Wong is also known for experimenting with various types of musical genres and influences. In the 1990s, Wong collaborated with Scottish alternative rock band Cocteau Twins, citing them as her favorite band. Wong has also covered other well-known English-language songs in concert, including Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and Blondie’s “Heart of Glass”, the latter of which she performed during her 2003-2005 No Faye! No Live! (菲比尋常) concert tour.

This young man is a wonderful singer, but I fear for his vocal health in the long run. I hope his quick catapult into fame won’t screw up his voice.
